Chapter 6 - THE ENVELOPE AT DUSK

Claire’s laughter had barely faded when headlights swept across the lake.
A black sedan moved slowly along the private drive toward the estate.
The peaceful expression disappeared from my daughter’s face.
Her arms tightened around herself.
Grace remained asleep against my chest, unaware that the sound of tires on gravel had transformed her mother’s body from relaxed to rigid in less than a second.
“Were you expecting anyone?” Claire whispered.
“No.”
I stood carefully, keeping Grace supported beneath her head, and pressed the security button beside the porch door.
The exterior cameras appeared on my phone.
A thin man in a gray suit stepped from the sedan carrying a sealed white envelope. He remained beside his vehicle and held both hands where the security guards could see them.
One of my guards spoke through the intercom.
“State your business.”
“I am a licensed process server. I have legal documents for Claire Reed.”
Claire stopped breathing.
Six months of safety disappeared from her face.
The porch from her face.
The porch, the lake, the warm nursery, and the sleeping child in my arms no longer existed for her.
She was back inside Rosehaven.
Back beneath Julian’s gaze.
Back in a room where every door belonged to him.
I handed Grace to the night nurse, then turned toward my daughter.
“Claire, look at me.”
She tried.
“Has Julian escaped?”
“No.”
“Is he coming here?”
“No.”
“How do you know?”
“Because Dana Pierce would have called before he crossed the first secure door.”
Her breathing remained shallow.
I moved closer without touching her.
“Do you want me to accept the documents?”
She looked toward the distant sedan.
“What happens if we refuse?”
“He leaves them with counsel or follows the legal procedure required. Refusing the envelope will not erase the case.”
Claire swallowed.
“Then accept it.”
I contacted Thomas Grant.
He joined through a secure call while my guard received the envelope at the gate.
Thomas instructed us not to open it until he arrived through encrypted video.
Ten minutes later, his silver haired face appeared on the study monitor.
I broke the seal.
The first document was a petition filed in family court by Julian Reed.
He demanded recognition of his parental rights over Grace.
He requested immediate access to her medical records, independent genetic testing, and supervised contact while awaiting criminal trial.
The second document accused Claire of severe emotional instability.
Julian claimed my daughter suffered from untreated postpartum trauma, paranoia, violent fantasies, and an unhealthy dependence on me.
He described my Lake Winnebago estate as an isolated compound controlled by a vindictive billionaire seeking revenge.
Claire sat across from me with both hands pressed against her mouth.
“He said he would take her.”
Thomas continued reading.
Julian alleged that I had used my ownership of Rosehaven to remove him illegally, manipulate federal investigators, and prevent him from seeing his child.
He claimed Claire had been pressured into accusing him.
He requested that the court appoint an independent guardian to investigate whether Grace should be removed from both of us until the dispute was resolved.
“No,” Claire whispered. “He cannot take her. Mom, he cannot.”
“He has filed a petition,” Thomas said. “He has not received an order.”
“What if the judge believes him?”
“Then we present evidence.”
Claire stood so suddenly that the chair struck the floor.
“You do not understand. He planned this. He told me nobody would believe me. He said pregnancy would make every fear look like madness.”
I crossed the study and stopped several feet from her.
“Tell me what you need.”
“I need this to stop.”
“I cannot promise that tonight.”
Tears filled her eyes.
I wanted to promise that Julian would never touch her life again.
I wanted to buy every courtroom, silence every attorney, and lock every legal door before he reached it.
That instinct frightened me.
Julian had controlled Claire by convincing himself that his judgment mattered more than her choices.
I would not protect her by becoming another person who decided everything alone.
“Do you want Grace brought down?” I asked.
Claire nodded.
The night nurse carried the baby into the study.
The moment Grace settled against Claire’s chest, my daughter’s breathing began to slow.
Thomas continued.
“The petition contains photographs.”
“What photographs?” I asked.
He enlarged one document on the screen.
The image showed Claire standing beside Grace’s crib at three in the morning.
Her hair was loose.
Tears streaked her face.
One hand covered her mouth as she stared down at her sleeping child.
The photograph had been taken from inside the nursery.
Another image showed me carrying Grace from the room while Claire sat on the floor.
A third showed Claire handing the baby to me and saying something the camera could not record clearly.
Julian’s petition supplied a caption.
CLAIRE REED ADMITTING SHE CANNOT SAFELY CARE FOR THE CHILD.
Claire stared at the photographs.
“That was the night I had a panic attack.”
“I remember,” I said.
“I gave Grace to you because my hands would not stop shaking.”
“That was a responsible decision.”
“He made it look like abandonment.”
Thomas leaned toward his screen.
“Margaret, these photographs were taken after the estate security system was replaced.”
I looked toward the nursery monitor on the desk.
The small device displayed Grace sleeping peacefully upstairs.
No private camera had been authorized beyond the visible security unit in the hallway.
My head of security entered the study.
“We are shutting down every wireless device in the nursery.”
Claire clutched Grace closer.
“Someone has been watching us?”
“We do not know yet,” I said.
The security team entered the nursery wearing gloves.
They inspected the monitor, electrical outlets, smoke detector, lamp, and air purifier.
Nothing appeared unusual.
Then one guard lifted a stuffed white lamb from the shelf above the crib.
The toy had been delivered as part of Rosehaven’s newborn care package.
A tiny black lens hid behind one glass eye.
The device was still transmitting.
Its signal did not lead to Julian’s detention facility.

It led directly to a private server inside Rosehaven Women’s Medical Center.
Continue to the next part: The hidden nursery camera reveals that Julian’s supporters remained inside Rosehaven and had been building a false record against Claire since the night Grace came home.
