Chapter 2 - The Hospital Julian Never Truly Owned

Julian laughed.
It was a small sound without humor.
“You believe one phone call can frighten me inside my own hospital?”
Eleanor returned the phone to her handbag.
“I did not call anyone.”
Julian’s eyes narrowed.
“What did you press?”
“A trust emergency command.”
Dr. Grant looked between them.
Claire gripped Eleanor’s hand more tightly.
Julian stepped into the room.
“Explain yourself.”
Eleanor studied him.
He was accustomed to frightened employees, obedient board members, and patients who believed a title made him untouchable.
He had never bothered learning how Rosehaven had been financed.
Fifteen years earlier, Eleanor’s investment group purchased the land beneath the medical center.
When Julian proposed expanding the clinic into a luxury maternity hospital, he could not secure enough private funding.
Eleanor quietly created the Whitmore Health Trust.
The trust purchased the building, medical equipment, and debt.
Julian’s company managed Rosehaven.
It did not own it.
Claire never knew because Eleanor did not want her marriage shaped by money.
Julian never knew because he had signed documents without reading beyond the authority granted to him.
“You control operations,” Eleanor said.
“The Whitmore Health Trust owns the property, equipment, and primary medical licenses.”
Julian’s face changed.
“That is impossible.”
“The legal department will explain it.”
“You invested through anonymous funds.”
“Yes.”
“You deceived me.”
“No. You assumed any money supporting you naturally belonged beneath your control.”
His phone vibrated.
Then again.
Messages appeared rapidly.
Executive access suspended.
Pharmacy authority frozen.
Patient records placed under independent protection.
Security credentials revoked pending investigation.
Julian stared at the screen.
“You cannot suspend a hospital director without a board vote.”
“The emergency protection clause permits immediate removal when an executive is suspected of threatening a patient.”
“I have threatened no patient.”
Eleanor looked toward Claire’s bruises.
“Your wife is a patient.”
Julian’s jaw tightened.
“Claire is emotionally unwell.”
Dr. Grant turned toward him.
“She has visible injuries.”
“She caused them during an episode.”
Claire looked up.
“What?”
Julian removed a folder from beneath his arm.
“I did not want to discuss this in front of your mother.”
He placed it on the counter.
Inside were psychiatric notes describing paranoia, emotional outbursts, and self harming behavior.
Claire stared at the pages.
“I have never seen this doctor.”
Julian looked sorrowful.
“You do not remember several appointments.”
“That is a lie.”
“Claire, please.”
His voice became gentle.
It was the voice he used when other people were watching.
“You have struggled throughout the pregnancy.”
Eleanor opened the folder.
The reports carried the signature of Dr. Marcus Hill, Rosehaven’s chief psychiatrist.
One entry claimed Claire threw herself against furniture during an argument.
Another described delusions that Julian planned to harm her during childbirth.
He had documented her true fear as psychiatric evidence before she ever reported it.
Eleanor looked toward Dr. Grant.
“Has Claire shown signs of psychosis?”
“No.”
“Confusion?”
“No.”
“Self harming behavior?”
“Never.”
Julian interrupted.
“You see her briefly during appointments.”
Dr. Grant’s expression hardened.
“I see a frightened woman with patterned injuries across her body.”
Julian reached toward Claire.
She recoiled.
The movement was instinctive.
Every person in the room saw it.
Eleanor stood.
“Do not touch her.”
“She is my wife.”
“She is not your property.”
A knock sounded at the suite entrance.
Two independent security officers entered with hospital counsel, Michael Lawson.
Michael carried a black legal folder and a tablet.
Julian stared at him.
“You work for me.”
Michael placed the folder on the counter.
“I represent the ownership trust.”
“You have no authority over clinical operations.”
“At this moment, neither do you.”
The security officers removed Julian’s hospital access badge.
His arrogance finally shifted into panic.
“This is absurd.”
Michael opened the trust order.
“Dr. Julian Reed is suspended from all authority pending an independent investigation involving patient intimidation, record fabrication, and suspected domestic violence.”
Julian turned toward Eleanor.
“You planned this.”
“I discovered my daughter’s injuries twelve minutes ago.”
Eleanor looked at him steadily.
“You built the rest yourself.”
Michael activated the tablet.
Security footage from the examination suite appeared.
Julian’s voice was clearly recorded claiming Claire had caused her own injuries.
Another file showed him entering the hospital records system from home late the previous night.
He had added psychiatric notes after midnight.
Julian’s face became pale.
“You accessed my private account.”
“The trust audit records every change involving high risk patients,” Michael said.
Claire looked toward the screen.
“He wrote those reports after he kicked me.”
The words entered the room quietly.
Eleanor turned toward her.
Claire was trembling, but she continued.
“He made me stand beside the bed.”
Her eyes remained on the tablet.
“He told me I would sign a consent form before the C section.”
“What consent form?” Michael asked.
Julian moved toward the door.
Security blocked him.
Claire looked at her husband.
“The one giving him authority if I did not wake up.”
Eleanor’s blood turned cold.
Julian had not only threatened her daughter.

He had prepared legal control for the moment after carrying out the threat.
Continue to the next part: Investigators will uncover the consent form Julian planned to use during Claire’s delivery, but its final page reveals that Eleanor’s unborn grandchild was the real target.
