Chapter 22 - Lily Chooses

Lily was sixteen when she asked to meet Patricia.
Public setting.
Therapist nearby.
Daniel and I discussed.
I was terrified.
Not of Patricia attacking.
Of history entering the room.
Then I remembered our own rule.
Lily was old enough to choose with support.
We agreed.
The meeting lasted forty minutes.
I waited in another room.
When Lily came out, she looked thoughtful.
“How was it?”
“Weird.”
“Do you want to talk?”
“Later.”
In the car, she said:
“She cried.”
“Okay.”
“She didn’t ask me to forgive her.”
“Good.”
“She said I looked like you.”
I laughed.
“Poor kid.”
Then:
“I asked why she gave me the medicine.”
My hands tightened on wheel.
“What did she say?”
“She wanted me quiet because when I was quiet, you looked like a bad mom for not being able to make me quiet.”
There.
No softened language.
Lily processed.
“That’s really messed up.”
“Yes.”
Then:
“I asked if she hated you.”
“What did she say?”
“She said she was jealous that Dad trusted you more than her.”
I looked ahead.
“Did he?”
Lily asked.
“Eventually.”
She nodded.
Then:
“I think I want to see her again someday.”
“Okay.”
No celebration.
No fear campaign.
Lily built a limited relationship.
Birthday lunch once a year.
Letters.
No overnights.
No medication handling.
No being alone together until Lily became adult.
Patricia accepted.
Then Daniel’s guilt shifted.
“I’m scared Lily will forgive Mom more than she should.”
I laughed softly.
“Listen to yourself.”
He did.
Then smiled.
“I’m becoming her.”
“Only if you start deciding for Lily.”
He nodded.
“Right.”

Control can pass generations if no one notices.
