Chapter 18 - Logan Comes Home

Logan served a little over five years after credits, then supervised release.

Carter was fifteen.

Riley seventeen.

Victim notification came.

I felt old fear.

Not because I thought he would attack.

Because old systems can wake.

Conditions:

No contact Ariana/Riley unless consent.

No employment involving fiduciary access during initial supervision.

Restitution balance.

Therapy.

Contact Carter according family court updated plan.

He moved into small apartment.

Worked sales for building supply company, not handling accounts.

Simone was nervous.

Carter excited.

He wanted father.

Family court transitioned supervised to therapeutic unsupervised day visits after evaluations.

No overnight initially.

Logan followed.

No disparagement reports.

Then Riley asked:

“Will he come family stuff?”

“Not where you are unless you agree.”

“Ever?”

“You decide for yourself.”

At eighteen, she said:

“Maybe someday.”

Then college.

Riley got accepted to UCLA? Could use real; no need. Maybe UC Santa Barbara. She wanted East Coast? Let's choose Northwestern? Expensive. Ariana can afford but we don't need. She went University of Washington for marine biology? The harbor motif maybe not. Unrelated: architecture. She chose UCLA design program. Fine.

Riley left home.

I did not intercept.

Obviously.

Then one day she called:

“Mom, I need money.”

My heart jumped.

Then laughed.

“Rent deposit.”

“What happened?”

“Roommate bailed.”

I asked:

“Do you want loan or gift?”

She paused.

“Loan?”

We documented simple.

Not because trust issue.

Because clarity.

She repaid over six months even though I could forgive.

She wanted.

I let.

That was healthy family money.

Then Simone.

She completed probation.

Record maybe misdemeanor, no felony.

She became certified medical billing specialist after restrictions ended.

Made decent income.

She managed her trust distribution with financial planner.

No Ariana access.

She dated a divorced teacher after years.

Carter liked.

No rush marriage.

Then Logan.

He wrote me after release only through attorney:

I will respect no contact.

He did.

Two years.

No surprise.

Then Carter high school graduation.

He invited:

Mom.

Dad.

Grandparents.

Ariana.

Riley.

This forced question.

Riley was nineteen.

“Do you want to go?”

“Yes.”

“Are you okay Logan there?”

“Yes. I don’t want sit near.”

We arranged.

Logan sat other side.

No interaction.

After ceremony, Carter hugged me.

“Thank you for coming.”

Then Logan approached at distance.

He stopped six feet.

“Can I say hello?”

Riley looked at me.

I asked her:

“Okay?”

She nodded.

“Hello, Logan.”

“Ariana.”

He looked older.

Then Riley.

“Riley, I’m sorry for that night.”

She answered:

“I know.”

No hug.

Then he turned to me.

“I’m not asking.”

“Good.”

Then:

“I paid last restitution this month.”

I knew from court notice.

“Good.”

No more.

He walked.

Riley exhaled.

“Was that it?”

“Yes.”

“Anticlimactic.”

“Most healthy things are.”

She laughed.

Then Carter graduation party.

No one forced family photo including Logan and Ariana. Carter took separate.

That was more respectful than one-table obsession.

Then Logan’s restitution fully satisfied after business liquidation, prison payments, post release.

Blake Harbor net loss remained some.

Company wrote off.

No unpaid.

His conviction final.

No open appeal.

Civil fraud settlement closed.

Then Evan.

Completed sentence/probation years earlier, paid portion.

No ongoing.

Then corporate system.

No new family fraud.

Controls worked.

Then Dad retired from trust advisory role.

Independent.

I remained CEO until forty nine then promoted Claire? She was CFO, maybe successor.

I decided to step back into executive chair.

Not because scandal.

Because I wanted life beyond emergencies.

Board chose Claire as CEO after process.

I remained chair.

That shocked family.

“Ariana giving up control?”

I smiled.

May you like

“Yes.”

And company survived.
