Chapter 16 - The Company Without Family Exceptions

Blake Harbor changed after Logan.
Not only passwords.
Policies.
No family vendor contracts without independent bidding and conflict review.
No executive approvals from personal devices.
Hardware security keys.
Dual authorization above $25,000.
Vendor bank changes verified by callback.
Corporate cards category restrictions.
No “Ariana said it’s fine” accepted without recorded approval.
Some employees complained.
Good controls feel annoying.
Then board asked whether Simone could ever work for company.
She never had.
Logan had.
I said:
“Same rules as anyone.”
No lifetime ban because sister.
Then parents.
Dad’s trust voting advisory role reduced voluntarily as he aged.
He told me:
“I thought controls meant distrust.”
“Sometimes they mean respect.”
“How?”
“You don’t make relationship carry what system can.”
He liked.
Then corporate co-trustee asked if I wanted resign as managing trustee due family strain.
I considered.
No.
I was good at role.
Boundaries do not require abandoning competence.
But I appointed independent trust protector to handle disputes involving me or Simone.
Again.
Less personal.
Then Simone’s trust distributions.
She started budgeting.
First year she blew through too fast and asked Dad for help.
Not me.
Dad said no after giving advice.
She was furious.
Then handled.
Nobody died.
Then her divorce from Logan finalized during incarceration.
Property:
House had little equity after debts.
Sold.
Simone received modest share.
Credit cards divided based responsibility.
Logan business debts mostly his, but joint obligations some.
She lost financially.
Not all bad choices returned by courts.
Her trust remained separate because structured.
Logan had tried to claim marital interest? Court found not direct marital property depending trust terms/distributions maybe distributed funds can be. We can say future trust interest remained separate; funds already deposited/joint spent were gone.
Then spousal support?
Short marriage around maybe 10 years. Logan in prison. Court awarded none from Simone due her limited income/trust complexity? Could be. No need.
Then Carter child support calculated based imputed/incarcerated? Minimal during incarceration, later.
Simone raised.
Parents helped some childcare.
She used after school program at public community center, not private $860.
Carter survived.
He even liked.
Then I asked:
“Do you need help with program?”
Simone smiled.
“No.”
I felt weirdly proud.
Then:
“But can you pick him Friday?”
I paused.
Riley?
Not her job.
I had availability.
“Yes.”
This was help, not rescue.
Carter sat passenger.
Awkward.
He said:
“Dad says you're not reason he's prison.”
“I know.”
“Do you hate him?”
“No.”
“Why?”
“I don’t need to.”
Then:
“Do you hate me?”
“No.”
“Riley does.”
“She doesn’t.”
“How know?”
“She’s angry and cautious. That's not same.”
He looked out window.
Then:
“I was mean.”
“Yes.”
He nodded.
No cushioning.
Then:
“Can people stop being mean?”
“Yes.”
“How?”
“Practice.”
That was perhaps most honest.
Then Riley later annoyed I picked him.
“You said no access.”
“I said no unsupervised with you. I can have relationship with Carter separately.”
She processed.
“Do I have to?”
“No.”
Good.
Family can be asymmetric.
Then Jonathan said:
“You’re finally not holding everyone hostage to same dinner.”
I laughed.
“Was I?”
“Your mom more.”
True.
Then my parents began hosting separate holidays.
Thanksgiving brunch with Simone/Carter.
Dinner with me/Riley.
At first exhausting.
Then alternate years.
No world ended.
Then Logan’s appeal.
He challenged computer access evidence and loss calculations.
Appellate court affirmed convictions, reduced restitution by $12,000 due double counting amount Evan already paid.
Sentence unchanged materially.
No exoneration.
Then Logan started prison business course.
Carter visited under therapeutic plan twice a year.
Simone did not.
Carter returned sad but stable.
Riley had no contact.
I had none.
Then one letter to me through attorney.
I declined.
Not ready.
May you like
No one told me I should.
That was new.
