Chapter 8 - The Appointments My Father Hid

Dad did not deny the meetings after seeing the calendar.

He sat inside the hospital family room with both hands wrapped around a paper cup of coffee.

“I wanted advice,” he said.

“About my daughter?”

“About the conflict between the children.”

“You met a sports physician three times to discuss an eleven year old girl.”

“Michael recommended him.”

“That should have warned you.”

“It did not.”

Dr. Price told my father that Emily might have anxiety, attention seeking behavior, and an unhealthy fixation on Tyler.

He suggested a family assessment before the next school year.

Dad believed an official diagnosis could help everyone understand why Emily reacted so strongly around her cousin.

“Reacted strongly?” I asked.

“She hid when he entered rooms. She cried before family events.”

“Because he hurt her.”

“We did not know that.”

“I told you.”

“You gave us incidents. Michael gave us an explanation.”

“You chose the explanation that blamed a child.”

Dad stared at the floor.

“Yes.”

Price had asked him to collect examples of Emily becoming upset. That was why Dad watched her more closely during family gatherings.

He wrote down the times she refused to sit near Tyler, left the room, or asked to go home.

Those notes were inside Price’s cabinet.

They had been prepared for a psychological referral that could later be used to discredit her testimony.

My father had unknowingly helped build it.

“How much did Michael tell you?” I asked.

“He said Emily had threatened Tyler’s scholarship by spreading stories about medication.”

“She never threatened anything.”

“I know that now.”

“Did you know Price planned to operate on her?”

“No.”

“Would you have questioned him if I had not found the video?”

Dad began crying.

“I don’t know.”

That answer was more devastating than a lie.

My mother stood near the window.

“I would have.”

I looked at her.

“You watched Vivian put something in Grandpa’s wine?” Wait wrong story. Need correct. Let's adjust. We are in current story, mother at pool. Need no contamination. Let's rewrite line.

My mother stood near the window.

“I would have questioned him.”

I looked at her.

“You watched Tyler bully Emily for months.”

Her face collapsed.

“I know.”

The entire family had reached the point where promises about hypothetical courage meant nothing.

Only past choices mattered.

The investigator collected Dad’s written notes and added them to the evidence file.

Michael’s attorney later argued that my father’s concerns proved Emily had behavioral problems before the pool incident.

The attempt failed because Price’s records showed he had received payments from Turner Performance.

But the strategy revealed Michael’s plan.

First, label Emily unstable.

Then injure her.

Then pressure me to sign a statement describing her as the aggressor.

Finally, use a corrupt doctor to complicate the medical evidence.

He had not expected Mason to preserve the videos.

Children were supposed to remain frightened and forgetful.

That assumption destroyed him.

Emily’s operation lasted two hours.

The surgeons repaired the damaged joint and stabilized the fractures. They could not promise complete movement, but the nerves remained intact.

When she woke, her first question was whether she could draw again.

The surgeon said yes, though it might take time.

Emily cried from relief.

I cried where she could see me.

I did not hide it.

Three days later, Tyler agreed to a formal interview without Michael present.

Sarah sat behind the observation glass.

Tyler admitted slamming the equipment hatch intentionally.

He said Michael ordered him to make Emily afraid enough to stop discussing the pills.

“Did your father tell you to break her hand?” the investigator asked.

“No.”

“What did he say?”

“Make sure she understands what silence costs.”

“What did you think that meant?”

Tyler looked toward his own hands.

“I knew what he wanted.”

“Why did you record it?”

“Dad made me record confrontations.”

“Why?”

“So we could edit them later.”

“Did you want Emily injured?”

Tyler remained silent for a long time.

“Yes.”

Sarah covered her mouth.

The investigator continued.

“Why?”

“Because she looked at me like I was pathetic.”

“Did she say that?”

“No.”

“What did she say?”

“She asked why I let my dad inject me.”

The question had struck the part of Tyler he most hated.

Emily saw that he was not powerful.

He was trapped.

Instead of asking for help, he punished her for noticing.

Tyler also admitted pushing Nora.

He confirmed that Michael and Coach Hale staged the fall.

Then he revealed a final secret.

The pills beneath the pool were not the only evidence hidden at my parents’ house.

Michael kept a paper ledger inside the old pump room wall.

It listed every athlete, dosage, payment, and adult involved in Turner Performance.

“Why didn’t police find it?” the investigator asked.

“Dad moved it before the party.”

“Where?”

Tyler looked toward the camera.

“Grandpa’s workshop.”

My father went pale behind the glass.

Police searched the workshop immediately.

They found the hidden wall compartment.

It was empty.

A fresh screw lay on the floor.

Someone had removed the ledger after the pool incident.

The workshop camera showed my mother entering alone at two fourteen in the morning.

Continue to the next part: David’s mother admits she took the ledger after Michael threatened to expose a secret from David’s childhood.
