Chapter 7 - The Doctor Assigned to Emily’s Hand

I called Lisa before the police car left the stadium.

She answered on the second ring.

“Emily is asleep.”

“Where is Dr. Price?”

“He was here ten minutes ago.”

My throat closed.

“What did he do?”

“He checked her scans and changed the surgery time.”

“To when?”

“Midnight.”

The original procedure had been scheduled for eight the next morning.

Price claimed swelling near the damaged joint required immediate intervention.

“Do not let anyone take her from the room,” I said.

Lisa heard something in my voice.

“What happened?”

“He is connected to Michael.”

She locked the door before I finished explaining.

Hospital security reached Emily’s floor first.

Dr. Price was no longer at the nurses’ station.

A transport orderly arrived with paperwork authorizing Emily’s transfer to an operating suite.

Lisa refused to open the door.

The orderly left the cart and ran.

Police found him in the stairwell.

He was not a hospital employee.

The identification badge was counterfeit.

The transfer order carried Dr. Price’s electronic signature.

Price’s car remained in the physician garage, but security footage showed him entering a private elevator twenty minutes earlier.

The elevator served a medical research wing connected to the sports clinic.

When we reached the hospital, Emily was sitting upright beside Lisa.

Her face brightened when she saw me.

Then she noticed the police officers.

“Is Mason okay?”

“He is safe.”

“What about Tyler?”

“He helped the police.”

She looked down at her splint.

“I don’t know how to feel about that.”

“Neither do I.”

Lisa embraced me.

She had been holding herself together for Emily.

The moment my arms closed around her, she began shaking.

A new orthopedic team reviewed the scans.

Emily did not need emergency surgery.

Price had lied.

The investigators searched his office.

They found athlete blood tests, prescription templates, and private payment records from Turner Performance.

Several high school players had received banned substances through research exemptions that did not legally exist.

Price altered laboratory results before college recruitment visits.

Michael found families desperate for scholarships.

Coach Hale identified athletes willing to participate.

Price supplied medication and monitored side effects.

When aggression, heart problems, or injuries appeared, they called it the cost of elite performance.

Tyler was not the only child used.

He was simply the one Michael treated as both son and product.

Police discovered a locked cabinet containing files on Emily.

Her school photographs.

My notes about Tyler.

Copies of her pediatric records.

A handwritten page listed possible explanations for reduced hand function after surgery.

Preexisting joint weakness.

Patient noncompliance.

Accidental nerve damage.

Price had prepared excuses before touching her.

He intended to damage the hand further.

A permanent injury would weaken Emily’s credibility and make the original pool incident appear more severe but medically confusing.

If she struggled with memory after anesthesia, Michael’s attorney could claim she had changed her story.

Lisa sat beside the bed while the detective explained.

Emily listened silently.

Then she asked, “Did Tyler know?”

The detective hesitated.

“We do not have evidence he knew about the planned surgery.”

“He knew about Nora.”

“Yes.”

Emily’s eyes filled.

“People keep saying he was scared of his dad.”

“He was.”

“I was scared of Tyler.”

“Yes.”

“Why does his fear explain things, but mine made everyone call me sensitive?”

No adult in the room answered immediately.

I sat beside her.

“Because the family protected the person causing harm instead of the person feeling it.”

“Will they stop now?”

“They will not get to decide.”

Dr. Price was found in the research wing attempting to destroy sample records.

He was arrested before dawn.

Coach Hale was taken into custody at his home.

Michael remained jailed on kidnapping, assault, witness intimidation, drug distribution, and evidence tampering charges.

Tyler was placed in juvenile detention pending evaluation and a court hearing.

Sarah requested permission to see him.

He refused at first.

Then he sent her a handwritten message.

Did you know Dad wanted Emily’s surgery changed?

Sarah answered truthfully.

No.

His second question was harder.

Would you have stopped him if you knew?

She sat with the paper for nearly an hour.

Then wrote:

I do not know what the old version of me would have done. I know what I must do now.

Tyler agreed to see her.

Before the second surgery team arrived, Mason visited Emily carrying a new sketchbook.

He had drawn a picture of the pool with a giant red line through the equipment hatch.

“I’m sorry I didn’t tell sooner,” he said.

“You told Dad.”

“After.”

Emily looked at him.

“Tyler said he would hurt my mom.”

“What did you do?”

“I hid the camera.”

“That was brave.”

Mason shook his head.

“I was shaking.”

“You can shake and still be brave.”

The words were almost identical to something I had told Emily when she was five.

My daughter was learning that fear did not belong to cruel people.

It belonged to everyone.

The difference was what they chose while feeling it.

An investigator entered carrying Dr. Price’s appointment calendar.

One entry was scheduled for the following week.

Private consultation: Emily Parker and family.

Requested by Robert Parker.

I looked at my father.

He had denied ever speaking to Dr. Price.

The calendar showed they had met three times before the pool party.

Continue to the next part: David learns his father consulted the corrupt doctor about declaring Emily emotionally unstable before the attack occurred.
