Chapter 9 - Beneath Saint Agnes

Samuel knew Saint Agnes.
The building had been a private maternity residence beneath an old convent outside Nashville. Anne volunteered there before marrying David. Diane managed records and placed infants with donor families.
The residence closed after a basement flood thirty years earlier.
No bodies were reported.
Samuel said that was a lie.
Seven women and four newborns disappeared during the evacuation. Diane claimed they had been transferred to hospitals. No hospital admitted receiving them.
Elise Turner worked in the records office and copied placement documents before the flood.
Nathan’s biological mother was one of the missing women.
He had grown up believing she abandoned him after accepting money.
The registry proved Diane separated them.
Nathan had spent his adult life searching for the original Saint Agnes archive. He joined Rosehaven, worked for Diane, and married me because my father’s trust contained a sealed property schedule connected to the convent.
His motives began before me.
That did not erase what he did after loving me.
Labor became intense while federal agents searched the trust property files. Nora arrived from Washington to assist Rachel with the succession dispute.
The Saint Agnes land had never been sold.
It belonged to a dormant company inside the Whitaker trust.
My authority could open the basement vault after Lily’s birth.
Nathan needed me alive.
Diane needed me controlled.
Blake needed medical access.
All roads led to the same child and the same locked room.
The doctors prepared the delivery suite.
My daughter arrived shortly after midnight.
There was pain, shouting, pressure, and then the sound I had waited eight months to hear.
Lily cried.
Dr. Morgan placed her against my chest.
She was small, furious, and alive.
I touched her dark hair while federal witnesses sealed our blood samples.
The genetic test confirmed she was my biological daughter.
The trust transfer began.
I became permanent trustee.
Diane’s chairmanship ended.
Every account connected to Rosehaven froze.
The complete registry uploaded to federal custody.
For the first time, Diane no longer controlled the records she used to frighten people.
She was denied bail after the hospital sabotage evidence surfaced.
Blake was arrested at a motel near the airport.
Nathan remained missing.
The Saint Agnes property opened under a federal warrant and my trustee authority.
Agents entered through the abandoned chapel.
Beneath the altar, a stairwell descended into the sealed maternity residence.
The rooms remained surprisingly intact.
Beds.
Medical cabinets.
Infant bracelets.
Water damage across the walls.
A large steel door stood at the end of the corridor.
The key Nathan left did not open it.
Samuel recognized the lock.
“It requires two Whitaker trustee keys.”
Anne’s key had been hidden inside my father’s trust box.
Diane possessed the second.
She refused to surrender it.
Rachel visited her in detention.
Diane sat behind reinforced glass without pearls or makeup.
“You struck your pregnant daughter over money,” Rachel said.
Diane smiled.
“Maya is not my daughter.”
“You raised her.”
“I maintained her.”
“You used her.”
“I protected her from the truth.”
“What is beneath Saint Agnes?”
Diane leaned closer.
“Ask Maya why her father created a trust that activates only after a biological child is born.”
“Because he feared infant substitution.”
“No.”
She looked toward the recording camera.
“Because Maya was never supposed to have children.”
Rachel returned to the hospital with that sentence.
My medical history showed no known fertility problem. Lily had been conceived naturally.
Samuel appeared disturbed.
Anne once told him that Saint Agnes selected certain infants for long term medical observation. The children received hidden identifiers inside their birth files.
My identifier was M 13.
Nathan’s was N 07.
The numbers appeared beside a research project called Continuity.
Diane had not only arranged adoptions.
She had tracked children after placement.
My pregnancy activated the final phase of a program started before my birth.
Federal analysts opened the Saint Agnes server room.
One terminal still had backup power.
The screen displayed a live camera feed.
Elise Turner sat inside a locked room beneath the steel door.
Nathan stood beside her.
He looked directly toward the camera.

“Maya, bring Lily’s genetic result if you want to hear why Diane chose both of us.”
Continue to the next part: Nathan demands the proof of Lily’s identity before he reveals what the Saint Agnes program did to its children.
