Chapter 3 - The Order Signed Before the Attack

Rachel had never seen the affidavit.

Her name, bar number, office address, and electronic seal were all accurate. The document claimed she had observed my increasing paranoia during the financial investigation.

It stated I placed false records inside the donation box to frame my mother.

The court order had been issued at four fifteen that afternoon.

Diane attacked me at six forty.

She obtained medical authority before creating the emergency used to justify it.

Rachel called the issuing judge.

Judge Alan Price answered from his home and sounded alarmed. He remembered reviewing the petition through an emergency legal portal.

The supporting video showed a woman who looked like Rachel confirming the affidavit.

The voice sounded like her.

The woman was not.

Someone had created a convincing artificial recording using footage from Rachel’s public lectures.

The judge suspended the order immediately, but the hospital had already accepted it.

Diane appeared at the end of the maternity corridor while security updated the system.

She had changed clothes.

The pink blazer was gone. She wore a dark blue suit and a white bandage around one wrist.

Two attorneys walked beside her.

She looked like the victim she wanted the world to see.

“You cannot keep a mother away from her daughter,” she announced.

Rachel stepped into the hallway.

“You are under investigation for assault.”

“I defended myself.”

“Against an eight month pregnant woman holding a napkin?”

Diane smiled.

“Maya has always known how to perform weakness.”

I heard her through the open door.

The fetal monitor quickened with my pulse.

My mother moved closer until security blocked her.

“Maya, tell them to let me in.”

“No.”

“You need family.”

“I needed family when you raised a metal rod.”

Her expression hardened for half a second.

Then she returned to concern.

“You are confused. That blow was an accident.”

“You shouted that everything I had belonged to you.”

“You were stealing from pregnant women.”

“The money remained inside the box.”

“Because I stopped you.”

Rachel requested that police arrest her.

The detective assigned to the event had not yet completed witness interviews. Diane’s attorneys argued that removing her before the court reviewed the videos would violate her rights.

Power rarely erased consequences completely.

It delayed them until the victim became exhausted.

A nurse closed my door.

I asked Lena to retrieve the backup file from the baby shower sound system.

The cameras had failed, but the venue microphone remained connected to a separate recorder used for speeches.

Diane had stood beneath the floral arch when she shouted.

The microphone might have captured everything.

Lena left with a police escort.

An hour later, she called.

The recorder was gone.

The venue manager said a woman in staff clothing collected it after the ambulance left. The woman presented an authorization bearing my signature.

Another forgery.

But one guest had streamed the shower privately for her grandmother. Her phone recorded the entire assault from the dessert table.

The video showed Diane taking the rod.

It showed me raising empty hands.

It showed the strike, my fall, and the water spreading beneath me.

Her voice was clear.

Fifty thousand dollars, and you thought you could keep it from me?

The police arrested Diane at 10:22 p.m.

She did not struggle.

She turned toward my room while officers placed cuffs around her wrists.

“You are making a mistake.”

“No,” I said. “I made the mistake when I kept protecting you.”

Her attorneys requested immediate release based on age, reputation, and medical concerns.

The detective collected her phone.

Inside were messages to a contact saved as WB.

The initials matched Dr. Warren Blake.

Diane: The order is active.

WB: The hospital will recognize you once Maya arrives.

Diane: She may refuse to go.

WB: Then create enough fetal concern that the ambulance has no choice.

Diane: Grant is not available.

WB: You do not need Grant. Use what the venue gives you.

She had chosen the metal rod after arriving.

The assault was improvised.

The hospital plan was not.

Dr. Blake expected me to enter Vanderbilt in fetal distress. He had arranged for a specialist to recommend immediate delivery under Diane’s medical authority.

My current obstetrician, Dr. Leah Morgan, checked the staff schedule.

A consulting physician had requested access to my case.

Dr. Warren Blake.

He was already inside the hospital.

Security searched his office and found it empty.

Then my monitor alarm changed.

My daughter’s heartbeat slowed sharply.

The intravenous line beside me contained medication I had not seen the nurse connect.

Continue to the next part: Someone reaches Maya’s hospital treatment before Diane can regain control through the court.
