Chapter 3 - The Sister Who Finally Stopped Laughing
Leo was admitted to the hospital that evening.
Doctors treated the infection and dehydration caused by the missed medicine and overheated nursery.
His condition improved after several hours.
Sophia sat beside the crib in the pediatric room.
Lucas stood near the window in his Army uniform.
He had returned home expecting relief.
Instead, every hour revealed another betrayal.
Sophia looked at him.
“Did you know your mother disliked me this much?”
“No.”
“You knew she controlled everything.”
“Yes.”
“You always told me that was how she showed love.”
Lucas closed his eyes.
“I was wrong.”
Sophia looked toward Leo.
“She said you would believe her.”
“I did believe her too often.”
The honesty hurt them both.
Before his deployment, Sophia complained that Eleanor entered the nursery without permission.
Lucas called his mother experienced.
Sophia said Audrey took photographs of private medical papers.
Lucas said his sister was probably helping organize them.
Sophia said the nursery felt too warm.
Lucas reminded her Eleanor had raised two children.
Every time his wife asked him to look closer, Lucas offered the explanation that required the least conflict.
“I left you alone with them,” he said.
“Yes.”
The word came without comfort.
Lucas did not ask her to ease his guilt.
He sat beside her.
“What do you need from me now?”
“The truth.”
He nodded.

Michael arrived carrying the security archive.
Audrey came with him.

“Sophia, I am sorry.”

“I thought Mom wanted temporary custody because you were exhausted.”
“You locked me in the nursery.”
“I know.”
“You took my phone.”
“I know.”
“You watched Leo cry.”
Audrey’s eyes filled.
“I know.”
Sophia looked toward her.
“Why?”
Audrey sat slowly.
“Because Mom said if I helped, she would make me co trustee.”
Lucas placed the tablet on the table.
“So you knew about the trust.”
“Not everything.”
“How much?”
“I knew Sophia had control.”
“I knew Mom wanted it back.”
Lucas’s expression hardened.
“And you agreed to help her take it.”
Audrey began crying.
“She said Sophia was using the baby to replace us.”
Sophia stared.
“I never tried to replace anyone.”
“I know that now.”
“What changed?”
Audrey looked toward Leo.
“He got sick.”
The answer was devastating in its simplicity.
Audrey had accepted cruelty until consequences became impossible to ignore.
Michael played the earlier footage.
Three months before Lucas deployed, Eleanor and Audrey stood inside the estate library.
Eleanor said Sophia’s pregnancy had changed Lucas.
Audrey replied that he no longer attended family dinners.
Eleanor placed a stack of documents on the desk.
“If Sophia becomes the trust representative, we lose control.”
Audrey asked what could be done.
Eleanor answered.
“We document instability.”
The next clip showed Audrey entering Sophia’s bedroom and photographing a journal.
Sophia recognized it.
She had written about fear, exhaustion, and uncertainty during pregnancy.
Eleanor later quoted the private entries inside the false medical evaluation.
Lucas turned toward his sister.
“You read her journal.”
Audrey lowered her eyes.
“Yes.”
Another recording showed Eleanor instructing Audrey to provoke arguments while the hallway microphone recorded.
“If Sophia raises her voice, we save the file.”
Audrey had followed those instructions.
She criticized Sophia’s appearance.
Questioned the baby’s name.
Mocked her family.
Whenever Sophia reacted, Audrey secretly recorded it.
Lucas looked toward his wife.
“I need you to know I never saw these.”
Sophia answered quietly.
“But you saw the arguments.”
“And I blamed you for reacting.”
“Yes.”
Audrey covered her face.
“I was jealous.”
Sophia stared at her.
“Of what?”
“You took Lucas away.”
Lucas stood.
“I was never yours to keep.”
Audrey flinched.
Their mother had taught both children that family closeness meant permanent obedience.
Lucas’s marriage felt like theft because Eleanor framed independence as betrayal.
Michael opened another file.
The financial motive extended beyond the estate.
Eleanor had borrowed heavily against Bennett investments before Leo’s birth.
Once trust authority transferred to Lucas and Sophia, the withdrawals became visible.
Sophia had requested an independent audit.
That was why Eleanor became desperate.
“She thought I was auditing the household budget,” Sophia whispered.
Michael nodded.
“You were close to discovering several unauthorized loans.”
Lucas read the figures.
His mother had risked millions.
“What did she spend it on?”
Audrey looked toward the floor.
“A private development project.”
“Whose project?”
“Mine.”
Lucas stared at his sister.
Audrey had launched a luxury hospitality company the previous year.
The family celebrated her success.
In reality, Eleanor secretly funded it through trust assets.
If Sophia discovered the loans, Audrey’s company could collapse.
“You helped remove my wife to protect your business.”
Audrey began sobbing.
“Yes.”
Sophia did not raise her voice.
“You watched me beg for my phone.”
“I know.”
“You saw Leo’s fever.”
“I thought Mom knew what she was doing.”
“No.”
Sophia looked directly at her.
“You hoped she knew because stopping her would cost you something.”
Audrey had no answer.
Michael informed them that Eleanor had attempted to leave the estate during questioning.
Military police stopped her near a rear gate.
Inside her vehicle, investigators found trust documents, cash, and a tablet containing messages to a private doctor.
The doctor had agreed to admit Sophia to a private treatment center after receiving Eleanor’s payment.
Lucas felt cold.
“How soon?”
“Tomorrow morning.”
Sophia held Leo closer.
They had returned only hours before Eleanor planned to remove her.
Audrey looked toward Michael.
“Will Mom be arrested?”
“That depends on the investigators and prosecutor.”
Audrey wiped her face.
“I will testify.”
Lucas studied her.
“Against her?”
“Yes.”
“Why now?”
Audrey looked at Sophia.
“Because I helped build the lie.”
“And?”
