Chapter 2 - The Camera Eleanor Forgot Was Recording

The paramedics examined Leo in the nursery while Lucas remained beside him.

Sophia sat on the rocking chair with a blanket around her shoulders.

Her eyes followed every movement.

Whenever Eleanor shifted near the doorway, Sophia tightened her grip on Lucas’s sleeve.

The paramedic looked up.

“His temperature is high. We need to transport him.”

Lucas nodded.

“I am going with him.”

Sophia stood.

“So am I.”

Eleanor interrupted.

“She is in no condition to make medical decisions.”

The CPS investigator turned toward her.

“Mrs. Bennett is the child’s mother.”

“She has not been behaving rationally.”

Michael opened the black folder.

“You mean according to this?”

He removed a document.

It was a petition for emergency custody.

Eleanor’s name appeared as the proposed temporary guardian.

Sophia stared.

“What is that?”

Lucas took the paper.

It claimed Sophia suffered from severe emotional instability after childbirth.

It accused her of failing to maintain the nursery schedule.

It stated that Lucas was unavailable because of military service.

It also claimed Leo would be safer under Eleanor’s supervision.

Lucas turned each page slowly.

“Who prepared this?”

Eleanor answered calmly.

“A family attorney.”

Michael looked at her.

“Not the family attorney.”

He placed another document on the table.

The doctor’s statement attached to the petition had been signed by a private physician who never examined Sophia.

The statement described confusion, dangerous attachment, and paranoid behavior.

Lucas looked toward his wife.

“Did you know about this?”

She shook her head.

“They kept asking me questions.”

“What questions?”

“How often I cried.”

“Whether I ever regretted becoming a mother.”

“Whether I heard voices when I was tired.”

Eleanor had presented each question as concern.

Sophia believed she was receiving support.

Instead, every answer had been transformed into evidence.

Lucas looked at his mother.

“You built a custody case while I was deployed.”

“I prepared for an emergency.”

“You created the emergency.”

Eleanor’s expression hardened.

“She is weak.”

Sophia flinched.

Lucas stepped between them.

“No.”

His voice remained calm.

“She was isolated.”

Michael connected the tablet to the living room television.

The nursery footage began.

The first recording showed Sophia rocking Leo late at night.

She looked exhausted but attentive.

Eleanor entered and removed the baby from her arms.

The audio captured Sophia asking for him back.

Eleanor refused.

“You hold him every time he cries. That is why he manipulates you.”

The footage changed.

Eleanor disabled the monitor.

Another recording showed Audrey taking Sophia’s phone and carrying it into the hall.

Sophia followed.

Audrey locked the nursery door from outside.

Inside the room, Leo cried while Sophia pounded on the door.

Lucas’s hands tightened.

Audrey stepped backward.

“I was only doing what Mom said.”

The next recording showed Eleanor removing Leo’s medicine from the nursery drawer.

Sophia tried to stop her.

Eleanor gripped her wrist.

“Your husband trusts me more than he trusts your panic.”

Lucas stared at the screen.

His mother had used his name as a weapon.

Another clip showed Sophia sleeping beside the crib.

Eleanor entered with the custody petition and placed several documents inside Sophia’s bedside drawer.

The investigator paused the video.

“What were those papers?”

Michael answered.

“Unsigned consent forms.”

One gave Eleanor authority over Leo’s medical treatment.

Another allowed her to move Sophia into a private recovery facility.

Lucas looked at his mother.

“You planned to have my wife committed.”

“Temporarily.”

Sophia covered her mouth.

Eleanor continued.

“She needed rest.”

“You wanted her removed.”

“I wanted control restored.”

The honesty escaped before Eleanor could correct herself.

The room became silent.

Audrey looked toward her mother.

“What do you mean?”

Eleanor ignored her.

Michael opened another file.

“The trust audit explains it.”

Lucas’s grandfather had placed the Bennett estate and several company shares inside a protected family trust.

When Lucas’s first child was born, voting authority transferred from Eleanor to Lucas and the child’s legal mother.

Sophia now controlled part of the trust with him.

Eleanor’s authority had ended the day Leo was born.

Unless Sophia was declared unfit.

Lucas understood.

“This was about the trust.”

Eleanor lifted her chin.

“The Bennett properties cannot be controlled by an emotionally fragile outsider.”

“She is my wife.”

“She was supposed to support the family.”

“She gave birth to the next beneficiary.”

Eleanor’s face remained cold.

“That does not make her capable of protecting what we built.”

Michael placed the final document on the table.

It was a draft agreement giving Audrey temporary control if Eleanor became unavailable.

Audrey stared at it.

“You told me I was helping Sophia.”

Eleanor looked toward her daughter.

“You were helping the family.”

“You planned to use me too.”

For the first time, Audrey appeared frightened of her mother.

The paramedic lifted Leo carefully onto the stretcher.

Lucas moved beside him.

Sophia followed.

Before leaving, Lucas looked back at Eleanor.

“You will not enter the hospital.”

Eleanor stared.

“I am his grandmother.”

“You are the person who withheld his medicine.”

“You cannot remove me from my own family.”

Lucas’s expression became ice cold.

“You removed yourself.”

The military police officer informed Eleanor and Audrey that they needed to remain for questioning.

Michael handed Lucas the black folder.

“There is more.”

Lucas looked at him.

“What?”

“The security archive did not begin after Leo was born.”

“It contains footage from before your deployment.”

Michael lowered his voice.

May you like

“Your mother had been preparing Sophia’s removal for months.”

Continue to the next part: Lucas will discover what Eleanor did before he deployed, while Audrey must decide whether to protect her mother or reveal the plan she helped carry out.
