Chapter 7 - Chloe’s Promotion

Chloe had been placed on leave Friday because Harcourt & Myers discovered unauthorized access.

Saturday night, Brenda threw a party anyway.

Why?

Because according to messages recovered later, Brenda said:

“You’re still moving to Atlanta. We celebrate future, not those idiots.”

Chloe replied:

“What if Hannah hears?”

Brenda:

“She won’t.”

Luke:

Keep dinner normal. Monday solves everything.

Monday solves everything.

The loan deadline.

If $2.2 million funded, Southline deposit cleared.

If Sterling Row deal closed, Chloe would become controller.

She could leave accounting firm before investigation completed.

They hoped to replace career before old one collapsed.

The dinner was not celebration.

It was farewell masquerading as promotion.

Then I realized why Brenda escalated over plate.

Stress.

Deadline.

Me refusing.

Then mentioning apartment.

She was pushing one last time before Monday.

But there was still question:

Why throw me out?

Wouldn’t they need my cooperation?

Detectives found answer in Luke’s texts with Chloe.

Three days before dinner:

Luke:

She gave me deed copy.

Chloe:

Signature next.

Luke:

I can handle.

Chloe:

What if she refuses?

Luke:

She hates conflict. Mom can wear her down.

Then Friday:

Chloe:

Bank still wants property pledge.

Luke:

I’ll get it this weekend.

Saturday 6:12 p.m., while I was cooking:

Luke:

She’s in good mood. After guests leave.

Chloe:

Mom says ask about keys first.

Luke:

No. Too much.

Brenda did anyway.

Then 8:04 p.m., minutes after I refused dishes:

Chloe:

She’s pissed.

Luke:

I know.

Chloe:

Need her out or calm.

Luke:

Mom handling.

Need her out.

Not forever.

Long enough to cool.

Then likely Luke planned come next day, pressure apology, present papers as “solution.”

I had heard message:

Come back tomorrow. Apologize.

Then maybe signature.

The bank called first.

One verification ruined plan.

Then Chloe’s unauthorized access.

She had used information from my company vendor file to help populate financial statements.

Not my actual bank login.

Not ability to move money.

But enough to create convincing package.

Harcourt terminated her for cause after investigation.

Her CPA license? She may be CPA. Let's say she held CPA. State board opened professional conduct review.

Chloe blamed me.

She sent:

You cost me my career.

I forwarded without response.

Then:

You could fix this with one phone call.

No.

Then:

I’m pregnant and you’re doing this.

Again.

Pregnancy did not authorize signature.

Then Oscar.

He separated from Southline completely and retained counsel.

He admitted his own role in failed investment and Sterling Row.

He had known Luke claimed Hannah consented.

He had pushed for direct signature.

When he saw bank documents after investigators showed, he realized.

He agreed to cooperate.

Then he filed for legal separation from Chloe? Maybe too early. He was angry. Let's say he moved out and sought independent counseling, not immediate divorce yet due pregnancy. Later.

He told investigators another crucial fact.

The $2.2 million loan had never been intended to remain secured by apartment for a few weeks as Luke claimed.

Southline’s projections assumed it would remain for at least eighteen months.

In internal spreadsheet:

COLLATERAL: HANNAH ATLANTA UNIT.

RELEASE CONDITION: SALE OF PHASE 1 OR SUBSTITUTE ASSET.

So I could have had a lien on my property for a year or more.

If project failed, apartment at risk.

Then internal notes showed expected Chloe occupancy could complicate sale.

Why one dollar rent?

Because Brenda wanted to create residence.

And maybe later argue family contribution/possession.

Not legal ownership.

But messy.

Then another spreadsheet line:

PHASE TWO EQUITY SOURCE: H. ROSS DESIGN RECEIVABLES.

My breath stopped.

“What does that mean?”

Rebecca looked grim.

“They planned to seek additional financing using your design business income.”

“How?”

“No final documents yet.”

Good.

No instructions.

But it showed intent extended beyond apartment.

The $2.2 million loan was only phase one.

They had planned to keep using my financial strength until Southline could stand alone.

They thought marriage made my balance sheet theirs.
