Chapter 21 - Chloe’s Own Door

Chloe bought a house at forty four.
Small.
Blue siding.
One car garage.
She invited us to dinner.
Mia twenty.
Home from college.
Chloe opened door.
“Shoes off.”
Leo laughed.
“You own a house and immediately become Mom.”
Chloe pointed.
“Leave.”
We laughed.
She had paid with:
Savings.
Business income.
A standard mortgage.
No forged signatures.
No family collateral.
She showed me office.
Her staging consultancy had five employees.
“Want to see books?”
“No.”
She laughed.
Then:
“I want you to know I’m not doing anything shady.”
“I assume you aren’t.”
She went still.
“What?”
“I don’t require proof every time.”
Her eyes filled.
Trust in limited domain had returned.
Then she gave me a framed copy of her first paid-off business loan statement.
I groaned.
“Why would I want this?”
“You don’t.”
Then:
“I wanted to show somebody.”
I hugged her.
Our relationship had become real family eventually.
Not sisters exactly.
But close enough that she watched Mia one afternoon? Did Claire allow? Chloe not Agnes. After years maybe yes. She had not physically harmed Claire, but serious fraud. Trust rebuilt. Mia adult by then, irrelevant.
Then Leo and Chloe cleaned Agnes’s old photo albums.
One image:
Agnes young.
Walter.
Leo toddler.
Chloe not born.
They cried.
No one erased her.
Then Chloe said:
“Mom spent years terrified we’d leave.”
Leo:
“We did.”
Then:
“And came back differently.”
Yes.
Then my duplex proceeds had grown through investments.
I used some to help Mia with graduate school? Careful not create dependency. We offered partial gift through transparent estate planning.
Mia asked:
“Do I owe you?”
“No.”
“Anything?”
“Call us sometimes.”
She laughed.
Then:
“Seriously?”
“No.”
