Chapter 7 - THEY WERE GOING TO LEAVE HER WITH MRS. DELUCA
The lake club reservation still mattered to them.
That fact was documented by messages sent while Lily’s breathing worsened.
CLAIRE:
Cabana charges full price if we cancel.
PATRICIA:
I know.
CLAIRE:
Other kids are already there with Daniel.
PATRICIA:
Mrs. DeLuca can watch Lily.
Mrs. DeLuca lived next door.
Seventy.
Retired elementary school teacher.
She had no medical training beyond basic first aid.
Patricia walked Lily over.
Not immediately.
After Lily had begun wheezing.
Mrs. DeLuca took one look at her and said:
“Where is her EpiPen?”
Patricia said:
“She has had medicine.”
“What medicine?”
“Enough.”
Mrs. DeLuca told them she would call an ambulance.
Claire said:
“Rachel will lose her mind.”
Mrs. DeLuca answered:
“Good.”
That woman may have saved my daughter’s life before I did.
Patricia refused to leave Lily there once Mrs. DeLuca insisted on 911.
She dragged her back home.
Claire called Daniel.
“What do we do?”
Daniel:
“Wait ten minutes.”
Those ten minutes nearly killed her.
Then Megan finally reached me.
I called 911 myself.
Dispatch sent paramedics.
Claire and Patricia realized emergency vehicles were coming.
Claire wanted to leave for the lake club anyway.
Patricia said:
“No, Rachel will get here.”
So they stayed.
Not for Lily.
Because they knew I was coming.
That was the room I entered.
Lily choking.
Backpack across the floor.
Patricia still holding control.
Then Mrs. DeLuca gave police a statement.
She had seen Patricia grab Lily by the arm.
She had heard Claire say:
“She’s ruining everything.”
She had also heard Lily say:
“I want my mom.”
That sentence broke something in me.
Then Daniel arrived at the hospital late that night.
He asked to see Lily.
The hospital said no until the safeguarding team approved.
He looked at me.
“I’m her father.”
I answered:
“Then start acting like one.”
He said:
“I didn’t know it got that bad.”
I showed him the recovered video.
He watched his own phone call.
Give it time.
He stopped defending himself.
Then whispered:
“I thought Mom knew.”
“Your mother thought a pill made deliberate peanut exposure safe.”
“I know.”
“You knew she was testing Lily.”
“I knew she was trying something.”
“No.”
I leaned toward him.
“You knew enough to tell her to stop.”
He looked away.
That was the truth.
Then Laura received the first court filing.
Daniel’s custody lawyer had withdrawn from representing him in any contested medical proceeding after learning what happened.
But there was another lawyer.
Patricia’s.
She had filed something that afternoon.
