Chapter 8 - What Donna Did Inside My Office

Donna did not deny entering my office.
She asked to watch the entire recording before explaining.
The video timestamp showed the previous evening, not the morning of the assault.
Michael met her at the service entrance.
Donna carried the food basket, though the eggs and cheese were not yet inside. Beneath the cloth lay the Blue Mesa envelope.
Michael opened my office using his residence access.
He told Donna I had authorized the meeting.
Cameron arrived ten minutes later.
Donna looked surprised to see him.
The audio began when the internal microphone detected voices.
Cameron: We only need the witness page.
Donna: Penelope said she needed the full packet.
Michael: She does. Cameron is helping verify it before the board meeting.
Donna: Why did she not call me?
Michael: Because she is trying to protect you from Hattie.
Donna hesitated.
Then she handed Michael the envelope.
He opened it.
Cameron photographed every page.
When he reached Lydia’s witness statement, he removed it and placed it inside his briefcase.
Donna noticed.
She demanded it back.
Michael blocked the door.
Cameron said the page was evidence of criminal exposure and had to remain with company counsel.
Donna insisted on calling me.
Michael took her phone.
My mother moved toward the office alarm.
Then Cameron said something that stopped her.
“If Penelope learns you helped Lydia hide the adoption, she may lose Blue Mesa and face a federal records investigation.”
Donna had not known Lydia completed the safe deposit documents under her name.
Cameron made her believe she could be arrested.
Fear kept her silent.
Michael returned the remaining envelope and instructed her to come back the following day with the basket. He said he would recover the page from Cameron after the board’s legal team reviewed it.
Donna left believing she had made a terrible mistake but still hoping Michael would correct it.
“Why did you not call me afterward?” I asked.
She looked toward her hands.
“I tried.”
My phone had shown no missed call.
Donna dialed three times from the bus station.
Each call reached a recorded message in my voice.
Mom, I am in a confidential meeting. Please do not contact anyone about Blue Mesa. Bring the basket tomorrow and trust Michael.
The voice had been generated.
Cameron controlled my company communication system.
Donna believed the instruction came from me.
“I should have known,” she whispered.
“You were frightened.”
“I still should have known.”
I understood the feeling.
I had spent years believing Michael’s loyalty would eventually become courage. Donna had spent one night believing my husband because he used my voice and claimed to protect me.
Manipulation works best when it borrows trust that already exists.
The office recording continued.
After Donna left, Michael confronted Cameron.
“You said she would hand it over willingly.”
“She did.”
“You threatened her.”
“She needed motivation.”
“Give me the page.”
Cameron refused.
He planned to destroy the witness statement after the Blue Mesa sale.
Michael demanded a copy.
Cameron laughed.
“You still think you are becoming part of Meridian after this?”
“What are you talking about?”
“Hattie promised Grant your design contract. Grant promised me your board seat. Only one promise is real.”
The conspirators had been deceiving one another.
Michael believed he would gain money and corporate influence.
Cameron intended to remove him once the sale closed.
Grant wanted Blue Mesa.
Hattie wanted the family fortune she imagined had been stolen.
Peter wanted the old financial fraud hidden.
No one planned to share equally.
The final minutes of the recording showed Michael removing my electronic seal from the safe.
He placed it inside his pocket.
“What did you do with it?” Detective Monroe asked.
Michael, now speaking through his attorney, claimed he gave it to Hattie for the mansion transfer.
Hattie gave it to Peter.
Peter claimed Cameron took it.
Cameron had disappeared.
His car was found inside an Arden Crest parking structure. Blood marked the driver’s door, but the amount was small.
Security footage showed him leaving in another vehicle.
The driver was Grant Vale.
Grant said Cameron threatened to expose Meridian unless he received ten million dollars.
They argued.
Cameron entered the car willingly.
Grant dropped him at a private airport.
Flight records showed Cameron traveling to Mexico under a false name.
Federal agents issued alerts.
Before they could locate him, the eighty four million dollar debt triggers activated.
Meridian declared default.
Banks froze three Arden Crest project accounts.
Contractors stopped work.
Employees received delayed payment warnings.
News outlets reported that my company faced a liquidity crisis after its legal director assaulted family members during a domestic dispute.
Hattie released an edited planter camera video.
It showed me ripping the chain from her hands, throwing it against the wall, and stepping toward her.
Donna’s body had been cropped from the frame.
Michael’s slap had been removed.
The public saw a wealthy executive threatening an older woman.
Hattie appeared on television with a bruise created by makeup and said she feared for her life.
I could release the full second recording immediately.
Adrian advised waiting until the court hearing the next morning, where authentication would carry more weight than social media.
Employees were already frightened.
Investors were calling.
Michael’s family controlled the first headline.
I chose not to answer with anger.
I released the unedited courtyard footage and Donna’s hospital report.
Then I announced an independent review of Blue Mesa, the hidden debts, and every executive credential used.
I did not mention my marriage.
Facts moved more slowly than cruelty.
They also lasted longer.
By midnight, guests and staff began posting their own camera clips from neighboring properties.
One captured Michael slapping me.
Another captured Hattie pulling the chain.
The edited story began collapsing.
Then Adrian received a court filing.
Michael had requested temporary marital control over Bellweather Nine, claiming I had concealed assets, manipulated him through financial secrecy, and become incapable of making rational decisions after the family confrontation.
The supporting physician was Dr. Nathan Webb.

The hearing would decide who controlled the mansion and several frozen accounts.
Continue to the next part: Michael uses Penelope’s hidden wealth against her while the assault footage is transformed into an argument that she manipulated the marriage.
