Chapter 5 - The Scene They Wrote for Me
Michael agreed to a recorded interview with my attorneys and Detective Monroe in exchange for the police considering his cooperation.
No one promised reduced charges.
He sat inside a conference room wearing the same dark suit from the courtyard. The confidence he carried into the mansion had disappeared.
Hattie had not yet been arrested because prosecutors were still reviewing the chain footage and property fraud evidence. She remained inside a private rental house under attorney supervision.
Michael began with the planning meeting.
Three weeks earlier, Hattie, Peter Coleman, Cameron Shaw, and a Meridian Atlas executive named Grant Vale met at Coleman Heritage Resorts.
They believed I would block the Blue Mesa sale.
Cameron proposed challenging my authority through a conflict of interest claim because I controlled both Arden Crest and Bellweather Nine.
Peter said conflict alone would not remove me.
They needed evidence that I could not manage family pressure objectively.
Hattie suggested confronting me publicly.
Grant Vale wanted a recording of me attacking an older woman.
The original plan involved Hattie placing the chain loosely around her own neck after provoking me. Michael would arrive and record me pulling it away. An edited clip would make it appear that I had chained my mother in law during an argument.
The scene would support an emergency restraining order.
Michael could request temporary control over the mansion and marital assets.
Cameron could argue that I should be suspended from the Blue Mesa vote.
“Did you agree?” Detective Monroe asked.
“I agreed to a confrontation. I did not agree to physical harm.”
“You agreed to place a chain around someone’s neck for a false recording.”
“It was supposed to remain loose.”
“Why was Donna invited?”
“She was not part of the original plan.”
Michael called her because he wanted the Blue Mesa packet before Hattie and Peter filed the ownership challenge. He claimed he intended to protect the records from them.
“Why not tell Penelope?” Adrian asked.
“Because she would know I had been discussing the sale.”
“You were trying to steal the project while secretly protecting one document?”
“I was trying to keep control.”
The phrase captured his entire moral structure.
Michael believed control transformed betrayal into responsibility.
Hattie learned Donna was coming after accessing his messages.
She moved the staged confrontation earlier.
When Donna refused to surrender the envelope, Hattie used the chain on her instead.
Michael arrived expecting to find Hattie pretending to be injured and me becoming angry.
Instead, he found his mother crying and the planned chain on the ground.
He did not ask questions because he already knew a confrontation was scheduled.
He assumed I had disrupted the plan.
Then he struck me.
“Why did you say the chain was meant for Penelope?” Monroe asked.
“Because Hattie said they could still use the footage if Penelope touched it.”
The doorbell camera recorded only the front courtyard. A hidden Meridian camera had been placed inside a flower planter at a lower angle.
That camera captured me throwing the chain against the wall.
Edited properly, it could appear I had swung it toward Hattie.
The first recording I released protected Donna.
The second private recording captured the hidden camera installation and planning conversation.
I had preserved it intentionally.
Michael did not know how much it contained.
Neither did Hattie.
I asked Adrian to play the first section.
Three hours before Donna arrived, Hattie entered the courtyard with Cameron Shaw and Grant Vale.
Cameron placed a small camera inside the planter.
Grant tested the angle.
Hattie practiced falling backward while holding the chain near her neck.
Then she laughed.
“If Penelope refuses to hit me, Michael will make her.”
Michael watched the screen.
“I never heard that.”
Grant replied from the recording.
“He only needs to grab her. She will fight back.”
Cameron asked whether Michael understood his role.
Hattie answered.
“My son understands that marriage is useful only when it improves the family.”
The second section showed Peter Coleman delivering a prepared domestic violence petition.
The document described me striking Hattie with a metal chain.
It was signed and dated before the incident.
Dr. Nathan Webb, a private physician associated with Meridian Atlas, had prepared a statement describing me as emotionally unstable due to work pressure and marital conflict.
He had never examined me.
The third section captured Hattie opening a message from Michael.
Donna is arriving at noon with the packet. Keep her away from Penelope until I get there.
Michael stared at the screen.
“I meant keep the documents safe.”
“You wrote keep her away from me,” I said.
“I was afraid she would tell you I called.”
“That fear mattered more than her safety.”
He looked down.
The recording continued.
Hattie told Grant that Donna could become useful.
“Poor women panic easily. If Penelope sees her mother humiliated, she will lose control faster.”
Grant objected.
“The plan is for you to appear vulnerable.”
Hattie smiled.
“Then we will have two victims. The camera only needs one villain.”
Her cruelty had exceeded the corporate plan because she enjoyed it.
Grant wanted a legal outcome.
Hattie wanted domination.
Cameron wanted money.
Michael wanted control.
Different motives had placed the same chain around Donna’s neck.
Detective Monroe paused the video.
“That supports conspiracy, false reporting, evidence fabrication, and assault.”
Michael leaned toward me.
“I can help you stop the Blue Mesa sale.”
“It is already stopped.”
“Grant has another route.”
“What route?”
“Your company debt.”
Arden Crest appeared financially strong, but Cameron had created off balance sheet obligations using my electronic authority. Meridian Atlas owned the notes.
If I refused the Blue Mesa transaction, Meridian could trigger defaults across several developments.
“How much?”
“Eighty four million.”
Adrian went still.
Michael continued.
“Cameron said the company would have no choice but to sell Blue Mesa or remove you.”
The assault plan had not been their only leverage.
