Chapter 3 - "My father, Samuel Reed, created trust before he died. ... After he died ...". In chapter 9, "He died four years before Baxter made this offer" maybe current Baxter offer recent, so dad died four years ago. Marriage seven years ago. So yes clip seven years ago two months before wedding, father alive. Fine.

The clip showed Samuel Reed in his study.

Daniel standing across from him.

I stopped breathing.

Daniel told me he first met my father at our engagement dinner.

That occurred one month before wedding.

This was earlier.

Two months before.

They already knew each other.

The audio began.

Dad:

“Does Nora know who your father was?”

Daniel:

“No.”

Dad:

“You need to tell her.”

Daniel:

“I will.”

Dad:

“Before you marry her.”

Daniel:

“Yes.”

He never did.

Then Dad placed a blue file on desk.

South Harbor.

Daniel opened.

Read Edward’s confession.

My heart stopped.

Daniel knew his father reset the alarm before our wedding.

Not six months ago.

Seven years ago.

His recent claim was false.

He had lied again during proffer.

Then Dad said:

“You cannot build a marriage on a grievance Nora does not know exists.”

Daniel:

“I don’t blame her.”

Dad:

“Your mother does.”

Daniel looked down.

Dad:

“And you still let Celeste believe Reed destroyed Edward.”

Daniel:

“She lost Lucy.”

Dad:

“So did Edward.”

Silence.

Then my father said something that changed the entire story.

“I offered your mother the South Harbor reconciliation records ten years ago. She refused them.”

Daniel looked up.

“She said you never contacted her.”

“I have every letter.”

Daniel:

“Why tell me?”

Dad:

“Because you love my daughter.”

Daniel:

“I do.”

Dad:

“Then choose whether you want her or the story your mother gave you.”

The clip ended.

I sat completely still.

Daniel had known the truth before marrying me.

He chose me.

For a while.

Then somewhere over seven years, he chose the grievance again.

Or money.

Or control.

Or all three.

But one question became more dangerous.

Why had Dad secretly met Daniel before our wedding and never told me?

There was one final clip from the old wooden moon.

Three days later.

Dad alone.

Recording a message.

Not to Daniel.

To me.

“Nora, if Daniel does not tell you about Lucy before the wedding, I need you to know there is one more reason the Hale family came back into Reed.”

I leaned closer to the screen.

Dad continued.

“Edward did not only help design Northstar.”

Pause.

“He left something inside it.”

“What?” I whispered.

The recording glitched.

Static.

Then returned.

My father held up a small black storage device.

“If this ever surfaces, do not give it to Baxter, Larkin, or Celeste.”

The clip ended.

Grace said:

“There is no remaining footage.”

“Where is the device?”

“We do not know.”

“Did Daniel know?”

“Maybe.”

Then she sent a photograph extracted from the final frame.

The storage device carried one handwritten label.

LUCY.

Not a trust.

Not a medical file.

A digital archive.

Created by Edward Hale.

Hidden inside the earliest Northstar project.

Whatever was on it had been important enough that Samuel Reed warned me never to give it to three different parties.

Daniel had spent months trying to control Northstar.

Celeste had spent years investigating Lucy.

Baxter and Larkin both feared South Harbor reopening.

And suddenly the poisoned bottle looked like only the latest violent layer over a file buried before my marriage even began.

Sophie crawled across the rug toward me.

I lifted her carefully.

My kidneys still ached when I moved too fast.

My marriage was over.

Daniel and Celeste were still facing unresolved criminal cases.

Baxter and Larkin were under regulatory review.

Northstar remained with Reed.

But Edward Hale’s final archive was missing.

Then Emily whispered:

“Nora.”

“What?”

“Dad kept one off site safe deposit box.”

“Where?”

She swallowed.

“Franklin County Courthouse.”

I stared.

The same courthouse where Celeste slapped me.

The same courthouse where the wooden moon footage played.

The same building where the second storage card had almost been revealed.

Emily continued:

“Dad listed one person besides you as authorized successor.”

“Who?”

She turned the old safe deposit record toward me.

Daniel Hale.

My husband had access to my father’s hidden courthouse box years before he ever poisoned me.

And next to Daniel’s name, Samuel Reed had written one instruction:

IF DANIEL OPENS THIS WITHOUT NORA, ASSUME LUCY HAS STARTED AGAIN.

I looked at Sophie.

Then at the black label in the photograph.

LUCY.

I had survived the poison.

The nursery footage had exposed Daniel and Celeste.

Northstar had survived too.

But the oldest piece of evidence in my father’s files suggested my husband’s betrayal may have begun long before the Baxter vote, and whatever Edward Hale hid inside the system was important enough to make my father fear the day Daniel tried to retrieve it alone.

Continue to the next part: Nora must uncover what the hidden LUCY archive contains, why Samuel Reed gave Daniel access to it before their marriage, and whether Daniel’s poisoning scheme was also meant to reach evidence buried inside Northstar decades earlier.
