Chapter 14 - EDWARD HALE’S CODE

The reset code belonged to Edward.

Not proof Edward personally entered it.

Codes could be shared.

But strong.

Paul Jensen remembered the night.

A refrigeration alarm sounded during a Larkin drug stability test.

Edward inspected system.

Baxter supervisor James Cole pressured staff to keep trial running because shutdown would ruin batch.

Edward reset alarm.

Why?

He believed sensor was faulty.

Then temperature continued rising.

Electrical cabinet overheated.

Fire.

No one intended it.

Bad judgment.

Pressure.

Failure to preserve records afterward made it worse.

After fire, James Cole asked Edward to say controller malfunctioned.

Edward refused.

Then Baxter lawyers blamed Edward’s reset.

Edward claimed Baxter system defective.

Everyone protected themselves.

Reed settled because litigation risk and drug trial confidentiality.

Samuel Reed later regretted.

He built Northstar to ensure no future alarm could be silently reset without record.

So who was villain of South Harbor?

No single mastermind.

A system of pressure and bad decisions.

That reality would have devastated Celeste.

She needed one guilty family.

Reed.

Baxter.

Larkin.

Anyone but Edward.

Daniel may have known more.

His old files contained father’s handwritten confession.

I reset it because Cole said sensor was bad. I believed him. Lucy’s medicine was in that building. I thought keeping system running protected the trial.

Edward’s daughter was receiving medicine from same trial.

He wanted it to succeed.

His own emotional conflict influenced technical decision.

Then fire.

Later Lucy died for reasons impossible to tie conclusively to storage.

Edward blamed himself.

Drank.

Lost work.

Died in car crash.

Celeste transformed shame into revenge because grief needed direction.

Daniel inherited story:

Rich companies killed Lucy and destroyed Dad.

Truth:

Corporate pressure contributed to unsafe decisions.

His father participated.

Baxter hid.

Reed settled.

Larkin protected trial.

Everyone had responsibility.

No clean enemy.

Then Grace told Celeste’s attorney about Edward’s confession through discovery.

Celeste refused to believe.

“Forgery.”

Handwriting expert matched.

Paper age consistent.

Not final proof but strong.

She demanded to see original.

Court permitted through counsel.

She cried.

Then accused Samuel Reed of planting it.

Again.

Truth can arrive and still be rejected.

Daniel reacted differently.

He asked to read.

Then sat silently for twenty minutes.

His attorney later told prosecutor:

“Mr. Hale wishes to amend his proffer.”

What did that mean?

He admitted another fact.

He had found Edward’s confession six months before poisoning.

He knew.

Celeste did not.

He hid it from her.

Why?

“If Mom knew Dad had reset alarm, she would fall apart.”

Again.

Protect through secrecy.

But he still used her revenge to justify his actions.

He knew foundation story was incomplete.

He knew Reed was not sole enemy.

He let Celeste believe because her anger helped him.

That may have been the cruelest thing he did to her besides involving her in crime.

Then Daniel admitted why he downloaded Northstar audit.

Not only Baxter vote.

He wanted to see whether modern audit architecture could authenticate the old South Harbor alarm tape.

Reed engineers had digitization tools.

If original strip proved Edward reset, Celeste’s historical claim collapsed.

Daniel planned to remove archive before she found it.

He wanted Baxter deal to give him access.

So he was protecting mother from truth while poisoning wife to obtain control.

A maze built from secrets.

Then my divorce attorney? We haven't formally separated but obvious. Grace maybe criminal. Separate family attorney, Laura. Keep characters manageable. I filed for divorce from hospital through family lawyer. Emergency custody remained.

Daniel did not contest temporary sole physical custody.

Perhaps because protective order prevented contact.

He requested future supervised contact if criminal court allowed.

I did not answer emotionally.

Sophie’s needs would be evaluated later.

Could I ever let him see her?

I did not know.

He poisoned her bottle.

Even if he expected me to taste it.

That fact may be impossible to live around.

Then my kidneys improved enough to discharge after twenty nine days.

I moved into Emily’s home.

Sophie slept in a borrowed crib.

No wooden moon.

I could not bear it.

Emily placed a simple local monitor on shelf.

“No cloud?”

I stared.

She smiled.

“Too soon.”

Maybe.

Then Reed board appointed independent chair temporarily.

I stayed on medical leave.

Vanessa continued Northstar audit.

Baxter Ridge withdrew acquisition.

Larkin suspended firmware product.

Regulators notified.

No catastrophic collapse.

No patients confirmed harmed.

Good.

Thomas Vale sold part of Larkin stake to meet loan requirements.

Celeste’s foundation froze Baxter donations pending review.

Everything she tried to protect changed anyway.

Then Lucas Vale, investigator, delivered one last South Harbor archive he had found for Celeste but never given her.

A photograph.

Samuel Reed.

Edward Hale.

Charles Baxter.

Standing together after fire.

Not enemies.

Signing something.

Document beneath:

SOUTH HARBOR RECONCILIATION AGREEMENT.

Not settlement.

Different.

Three men agreed to create Northstar prototype jointly.

My father was not sole creator.

Edward Hale contributed.

Charles Baxter contributed.

Northstar Trace, the system Daniel tried to suppress, may partly belong to his own father’s work.

Continue to the next part: Daniel may have been trying to destroy the very technology his father helped create after South Harbor.
