Chapter 8 - The Fifteen Minute Marriage

The message contained a link to a live security feed.

My condominium appeared on the screen.

Mara and Danner stood beside the broken table.

Both had weapons drawn.

A red light flashed beneath the metal case control system.

Danner looked directly toward the camera.

“Helen triggered the purge.”

Helen shook her head.

“I did not.”

Mara shouted through the feed.

“The case is transferring witness identities.”

Amelia connected her device to the penthouse console.

The outgoing data path led through a private server owned by Cross Meridian Advisory.

Helen’s company.

She stepped backward.

“My access was stolen.”

“By whom?” I asked.

The answer appeared when Amelia opened the administrator log.

Rebecca Kane.

A live biometric confirmation had been received nine minutes earlier.

Rebecca was supposed to be dead or hidden under Margaret Mercer’s identity.

Conrad stared at the log.

“That is impossible.”

Amelia looked at him.

“You knew Margaret was Rebecca.”

“I suspected after our marriage.”

Julian turned toward his father.

“Mom was part of this?”

Margaret Mercer had married Conrad after Amelia’s birth mother died. Julian remembered her as his biological mother because he had been two years old when she entered the family.

Rebecca Kane became Margaret Mercer to monitor Conrad and protect the ledger from inside his home.

The woman Julian mourned as his mother had been my aunt and former commander.

“Did she die?” I asked.

Conrad looked toward the dark windows.

“I watched her body removed from the house.”

“That is not an answer.”

“No independent autopsy occurred.”

Another false death.

The timer reached eleven minutes.

Amelia examined the transfer.

“The purge can be stopped only by validating the original succession marriage.”

“Between Evelyn Kane and Julian?”

“Yes.”

Julian smiled.

“You need me.”

I looked at him.

“Do not confuse usefulness with power.”

The system required his fingerprint and my original identity phrase.

I did not know the phrase.

Rebecca’s cassette contained one remaining recording.

I pressed play.

Her voice came through beneath the alarms.

“Evelyn, marriage is the promise that two identities become one. Our enemies misunderstood this. The correct answer is that neither identity survives unchanged.”

The phrase was hidden inside the lesson she repeated during training.

When pressure removes every safe option, protect the person, not the cover.

I entered the words.

PROTECT THE PERSON.

The system accepted my identity.

Julian placed his thumb against the scanner.

Nothing happened.

“Your biometric profile does not match the groom,” Amelia said.

Julian stared.

Conrad went still.

The original succession certificate named Julian Mercer, but the biometric record belonged to someone else.

“Who signed it?” I asked.

Conrad sat down.

“My first son.”

Julian’s older brother had died shortly after birth.

At least, that was the family story.

The boy’s name had also been Julian.

The man I married was born Adrian Mercer.

Conrad reused the dead child’s name to place his surviving son inside the succession contract.

Adrian had lived his entire conscious life believing he was Julian.

“You changed my name?” he asked.

“It preserved your eligibility.”

“You made me replace a dead baby.”

“You became my heir.”

Adrian struck his father across the face.

The violence erupted without warning.

He hit him again before Amelia pulled him away.

“You turned me into paperwork!”

Conrad touched the blood near his mouth.

“I gave you everything.”

“No. You gave me a name that belonged to a corpse.”

The timer reached seven minutes.

We needed the biometric profile of the original Julian.

Conrad admitted that the child had not died.

Rebecca moved him into protection after discovering a congenital condition made him vulnerable to Conrad’s succession plans.

Margaret raised Adrian.

Rebecca raised the original Julian elsewhere.

“Where is he?” Amelia asked.

Helen looked toward the building entrance.

“Inside the federal command team.”

The agent leading the operation upstairs was named John Kane.

Rebecca’s supposed son.

My supposed cousin.

The original Julian Mercer.

Amelia contacted Mara.

“Do not let the federal commander enter the penthouse.”

Too late.

The private elevator opened.

A tall man in tactical clothing stepped out with six armed agents.

He removed his helmet.

His face resembled Adrian’s, but the eyes were colder.

He looked at me.

“Hello, wife.”
