Chapter 5 - The Marriage Seven Years Too Early

The certificate carried our photographs.

Mine had been taken after Glass Harbor, when I entered the sealed civilian program.

Julian’s photograph showed him at twenty four.

The signatures appeared genuine.

I had never met him.

At least, I did not remember meeting him.

The ceremony location was listed as Fort Ashcroft, a federal training site closed six years earlier.

Witnesses: Rebecca Kane and Helen Cross.

Julian stared at his signature.

“I did not sign that.”

“You recognized the document.”

“I recognized the format.”

“Why?”

His father, Conrad Mercer, kept similar certificates inside a private safe. They were not ordinary marriage records.

They were succession contracts used by the Red Ledger trust.

The Mercer family paired legal heirs with protected government operatives. Marriage created joint authority over assets that neither side could control alone.

Some unions were real.

Others existed only on paper.

“You were assigned to me,” I said.

Julian looked disgusted.

“I was told Evelyn Kane died before the contract activated.”

“Then why marry Sloane Hart?”

“Because my father discovered you were alive under another identity.”

He admitted that our meeting at the charity auction had been arranged.

Conrad told him I possessed an inheritance connected to Rebecca Kane. Julian was supposed to gain my trust, marry me legally, and locate the metal case.

“Did he tell you to hit me?”

“No.”

“Did anyone?”

Julian remained silent.

The answer was still no.

No one needed to order what he already wanted to do.

He had spent three days testing boundaries.

Criticizing my clothes.

Demanding meal schedules.

Asking why my bank accounts remained separate.

The table was the first open explosion, not the beginning.

Mara reached the building through the service elevator forty minutes later.

She entered with two former federal investigators carrying portable evidence containers.

Her hair had turned gray since I last saw her, but her posture remained exact.

She looked at Danner.

“You died.”

“So did Rebecca.”

Mara’s hand moved toward the weapon beneath her jacket.

I stepped between them.

“No one reaches for anything until I know which dead person is lying.”

Mara examined the case.

When she saw the seven year old certificate, she sat down slowly.

“I witnessed another version.”

“What version?”

“Rebecca created a protective union between Evelyn Kane and the Mercer heir. The groom’s name was sealed.”

“Did you know Evelyn was me?”

“No.”

Danner laughed.

“She knew.”

Mara turned on him.

“I knew Sloane entered identity protection. I did not know her original designation.”

“You signed her memory transfer.”

The words changed the room.

I looked at Mara.

“What memory transfer?”

After Glass Harbor, I had suffered a head injury during the final extraction. Doctors warned that trauma, medication, and psychological stress might cause gaps.

That was the explanation I received for six missing weeks.

Danner claimed the gaps were intentional.

The task force used guided therapy and false documentation to suppress details that could expose protected witnesses.

Mara approved the process.

“You erased me.”

“No,” she said. “We limited access to memories that were already fragmented.”

“You decided what I was allowed to remember.”

“Rebecca believed the Mercers would search you.”

“They did.”

“And you survived seven years.”

“Inside a life they designed.”

Mara looked toward Julian.

“Not everything was designed.”

Julian’s phone vibrated.

A message appeared from his father.

BRING THE CASE TO PENTHOUSE FORTY TWO. COME ALONE OR THE CONDO TITLE TRANSFERS.

The property where we stood had been purchased by me years earlier.

Conrad should have had no authority over it.

Mara checked the deed records.

An alternate title had been filed thirty minutes after our wedding.

The condominium now belonged to Mercer Domestic Holdings.

My forged signature authorized the transfer.

Julian smiled weakly.

“You kept telling me it was your home.”

“It was.”

“Not anymore.”

The building speakers activated.

“Resident access will terminate in ten minutes.”

Conrad was forcing us toward him.

I opened the Red Ledger.

Most pages contained codes rather than names. One recent entry was written plainly.

SLOANE HART RESIDENCE.

PURCHASE FUNDS: RED LEDGER DISTRIBUTION.

My condominium had never been purchased entirely with my salary.

A hidden trust had supplied the down payment through my employer’s bonus system.

The home had been selected for me.

Beneath the line was another entry.

PENTHOUSE FORTY TWO.
