Chapter 5 - The Director They Planned to Sacrifice
Arden North placed me under formal investigation.
My protective suspension became administrative leave.
The company froze my equity transactions and notified regulators that confidential acquisition material may have been transferred under my credentials.
Mark Ellison told me the board believed my account could have been compromised.
He also told me several directors believed the simplest explanation was that I had approved the exchange and blamed Daniel after a marriage dispute.
Simple explanations are attractive when the complicated truth threatens important people.
Lauren refused to answer questions without an attorney.
Daniel denied any business connection to Northvale beyond ordinary design consulting.
Olivia claimed she had never heard of BrightCart.
Ashley said the kiss in the video was taken out of context.
The kiss lasted fourteen seconds.
Context had limits.
Rebecca hired a digital forensics team.
The forged email had been sent from my home office network while I was in Seattle.
The login used my password, face verification, and phone approval.
My phone had been with me.
Or I believed it had.
During the Seattle launch, Lauren visited my hotel suite one evening with contract revisions. I left my phone on the table while I showered.
She had access for seven minutes.
She could register another device.
The face verification required more.
Ashley had filmed me constantly during family gatherings. Northvale could build a synthetic face model from public videos.
My voice existed in corporate presentations.
My signature appeared on hundreds of contracts.
Modern fraud did not require stealing a person’s body.
Only enough pieces to persuade a system.
Daniel had supplied the missing personal information.
Security questions.
Childhood address.
Mother’s maiden name.
The name of my first pet.
He knew everything because I trusted him.
The forged email contained one error.
It referred to BrightCart as Project Harbor.
That code name had been used only during an early strategy meeting.
Lauren attended.
I attended.
Three board members attended.
Mark attended.
Daniel should not have known it.
Unless Lauren told him.
Or someone above her directed both.
The company’s internal review identified unusual payments from Northvale Commerce to a consulting group called Harbor Lantern.
The manager was Dr. Victoria Lane.
The therapist had not been hired only to influence custody.
Her company moved corporate money into Mercer Family Services.
Northvale paid Victoria.
Victoria paid Olivia.
Olivia funded Ashley and Daniel.
The family abuse operation was financed by a corporate competitor.
Northvale wanted the acquisition plan.
They also wanted me removed from Arden North before the deal closed.
A public custody scandal and allegations of financial abuse would weaken my position.
The forged email would complete the removal.
Daniel wanted my shares.
Northvale wanted my vote.
Lauren wanted my job.
Olivia wanted permanent access to my money.
Ashley wanted the lifestyle.
Victoria wanted fees and influence.
Everyone believed another person was running the plan.
Rebecca requested that I consider a settlement with Arden North.
Resign quietly.
Surrender a portion of the equity.
Avoid public fraud allegations.
Mark did not present it as a threat.
He presented it as protection.
“Sarah, even if you are innocent, the company cannot survive weeks of uncertainty before the BrightCart vote.”
“When is the vote?”
“Four days.”
The timing matched the custody filing.
If I lost authority before the vote, my shares entered temporary management under the executive equity agreement.
The board could vote them in my absence.
Northvale had offered several directors private positions if the BrightCart purchase failed.
My removal could change the result.
“I will not resign.”
“You may lose everything.”
“I may lose it anyway if I sign a document written by people benefiting from my silence.”
Mark looked toward the bruising on my face.
“I am trying to stop another institution from hurting you.”
“Then investigate the institution.”
He left without agreement.
At the hotel, Emma asked why we could not go home.
“Daddy is collecting his things.”
“Is Grandma there?”
“No.”
“Is the other lady there?”
“No.”
She looked relieved.
Then she said, “The other lady sleeps in your bed.”
My body went cold.
“How do you know?”
“Daddy carried me inside one time because it rained.”
Lauren had stayed overnight in my apartment while I traveled.
Daniel placed Emma outside during visits, but a storm once forced him to bring her in.
He put her inside the laundry room with toys and told her not to leave.
She heard Lauren in the bedroom.
“How many times?”
Emma held up three fingers.
I asked no more that night.
A child should not become a witness under interrogation by her own mother.
Rebecca arranged a child specialist for a recorded interview.
Emma described three nights when Lauren stayed.
She also described Olivia bringing papers into my bedroom and pressing something against my hand while I slept.
“What papers?” the specialist asked.
“Grandma said Mommy signs better when she is tired.”
I remembered one night after returning from a company dinner. Olivia offered me tea. I became unusually sleepy.
I woke with ink on my finger and a headache.
At the time, Daniel said I had taken a cold medicine.
I had signed no documents knowingly.
The family may have captured my fingerprint and signature directly.
The next day, police searched Mercer Family Services under warrant.
They found blank contract pages, copied signatures, and a portable biometric scanner.
They also found an original Arden North equity transfer.
It moved half of my shares into a marital trust controlled by Daniel.
My fingerprint authenticated the document.
The witness was Lauren Pierce.
