Chapter 4 - The Recording Before I Came Home

Ryan met Rebecca inside a police substation.

He refused to meet me because he believed I would attack him.

The assumption angered me less than the reason he feared consequences.

He had been inside the apartment for six hours before I arrived.

He had watched Olivia place Emma on the balcony.

He had watched Daniel close the sliding door.

He had eaten lobster while a child knocked against the glass.

Ryan did nothing.

Now he wanted protection because Ashley had threatened to blame him for everything.

Rebecca arranged a recorded interview.

Ryan surrendered a cloud copy of Ashley’s full video.

The footage began at 4:18 p.m.

Ashley was filming the seafood delivery for social media. She moved through the dining room laughing while Olivia opened wine.

Emma entered carrying her stuffed rabbit.

“Can I have a shrimp?”

Olivia pushed the platter away.

“You eat what children are given.”

Daniel brought Emma a bread roll.

It was already hard.

Emma asked for butter.

Ashley laughed.

“Beggar wants butter.”

Daniel looked uncomfortable.

He still did not stop them.

Emma touched a small chocolate dessert near the edge of the table.

Olivia seized her wrist.

“You were told not to touch.”

Emma began crying.

Daniel said, “Mom, let her go.”

Olivia released the wrist and ordered him to put Emma on the balcony.

He refused at first.

Then Ashley reminded him that Victoria would arrive soon.

Olivia said they needed the usual behavior.

Daniel picked up his daughter.

Emma clung to his neck.

“No outside.”

“It is only for a little while,” he whispered.

He carried her through the sliding door.

He placed the stale bread in her hands.

He closed the door.

Then he turned the lock.

The footage did not allow him to claim he had misunderstood.

He participated.

At 4:41, Dr. Victoria Lane entered through the service door.

She stood inside the dining room and watched Emma crying through the glass.

Olivia said, “This is what happens after Sarah travels.”

Victoria took notes.

She asked whether Emma often rejected the family meal.

Ashley answered, “She expects expensive food because her mother teaches her she is special.”

Emma knocked against the door.

Victoria did not ask why the child was outside.

She asked Ashley to keep filming.

Daniel poured himself a drink.

At 5:02, Emma stopped knocking and sat in the small chair.

Victoria moved closer to the glass and photographed her.

At 5:14, Olivia opened the door long enough to take Emma’s stuffed rabbit.

“You can have this when you apologize.”

Emma said she was sorry.

Olivia closed the door anyway.

That was cruel.

It was not the worst part.

At 5:37, a woman entered the apartment.

Not Victoria.

A younger woman in a gray suit carrying a document case.

Daniel greeted her by name.

Lauren Pierce.

I recognized her.

Lauren worked inside Arden North’s corporate strategy division.

She attended several acquisition meetings with me.

Her position gave her access to BrightCart forecasts.

She was also the person who recommended I bring confidential drives home during the Seattle launch because the company network was undergoing maintenance.

Lauren had placed the data inside my apartment.

She had directed it into Daniel’s reach.

The recording showed her walking into my office with him.

They remained there twenty minutes.

When they returned, she carried a copied drive.

Daniel kissed her.

Not on the cheek.

Not by accident.

Olivia watched without surprise.

Ashley turned the camera toward herself and whispered, “Future sister in law.”

My marriage had not only been exploited.

It had already been replaced inside the family.

Daniel’s private adviser was his lover.

Lauren’s company access gave Northvale the BrightCart information.

Daniel provided the household route.

They planned to portray me as unstable, take custody of Emma, obtain control over my shares, and build a new family using the value stolen from mine.

Emma had been placed outside so she would not see Lauren.

That was the other lady.

The unedited video captured Lauren laughing when Emma pressed her face against the glass.

“Does she always do that?”

Olivia answered.

“She will stop once Sarah is gone.”

Ryan ended the recording after I entered because Ashley’s live phone battery nearly died. The cloud copy preserved everything.

The custody hearing began at nine the next morning.

Daniel wore a dark suit.

Olivia wore pale blue.

Ashley sat behind them.

Victoria took the witness seat and described a child who needed protection from an absent, controlling mother.

Rebecca asked one question.

“Did you observe Emma being placed on a locked balcony?”

Victoria hesitated.

“She sometimes chose to sit outside.”

Rebecca played the recording.

Daniel carrying Emma.

The lock turning.

Victoria photographing the child.

The courtroom became silent.

The judge stopped the video before Lauren entered and ordered an immediate child welfare investigation.

Daniel’s temporary custody request was denied.

His contact with Emma became supervised.

Olivia was prohibited from contact pending investigation.

Victoria’s professional conduct was referred to the licensing board.

Then Daniel’s attorney asked to submit evidence that I had endangered Emma by leaving her with relatives I now claimed were abusive.

It was an ugly argument.

It was not entirely empty.

I had traveled.

I had paid Olivia.

I had trusted Daniel.

I had not known.

The court did not punish ignorance, but motherhood had never promised that good intentions prevented harm.

The judge asked when I first noticed Emma’s fear of the balcony.

I remembered small things.

She cried when the door closed.

She asked whether cold children were bad.

She hid bread inside her toy kitchen.

I had accepted Daniel’s explanations.

A game.

A phase.

A story from preschool.

I felt shame rise through me.

“I should have asked more questions.”

Daniel looked toward me as though the admission helped him.

The judge did not.

“Recognizing a failure to notice is not the same as creating the abuse,” she said.

The full video remained sealed as criminal evidence.

Lauren did not know police had it.

Arden North investigators asked me not to contact her.

They wanted to observe what she did next.

At 11:20, Lauren entered the corporate strategy office carrying a second copied drive.

Security stopped her.

She claimed I had authorized the transfer.

Then she presented an email.

It came from my work account.

It instructed her to deliver BrightCart data to Northvale Commerce and described the transaction as an approved competitive intelligence exchange.

My digital signature appeared at the bottom.

I had never sent it.

The evidence now made me look like the person directing the corporate theft.

Continue to the next part: Lauren’s forged email threatens to turn Sarah from victim into the central suspect in the BrightCart conspiracy.
