Chapter 4

Snow fell steadily over the Carter estate as Isabella's convoy disappeared through the front gates.

Inside the mansion, no one moved.

The silence felt heavier than the arguments that had filled the room only minutes earlier.

Lucas remained standing near the open front door, staring into the darkness.

"It can't end like this."

Richard slowly lowered himself into a chair.

For the first time in decades, the powerful businessman looked old.

Very old.

Helen finally broke the silence.

"Call the board."

"I already did."

Lucas answered without looking at her.

"No one picked up."

Richard grabbed his phone and dialed three directors.

Straight to voicemail.

A fourth call.

Voicemail.

A fifth.

Nothing.

Then his phone rang.

His face brightened for an instant.

"It's Alan."

Alan Pierce had served as the company's Chief Financial Officer for twelve years.

Richard answered immediately.

"Alan, thank God."

"We need you to—"

Alan interrupted politely.

"I'm sorry, Mr. Carter."

"I no longer report to you."

Richard froze.

"What?"

"The Board instructed me to cooperate fully with the Executive Chair."

"The audit begins tomorrow morning."

Richard's heartbeat quickened.

"What audit?"

A long silence followed.

"The forensic audit."

The call ended.

Richard slowly lowered the phone.

Helen looked at him nervously.

"What did he say?"

He swallowed.

"They're auditing everything."

Lucas felt a knot form in his stomach.

"Everything?"

Richard nodded.

"Every acquisition."

"Every executive expense."

"Every contract."

Sophie's confidence completely disappeared.

She looked at Lucas.

"That's... normal, right?"

He didn't answer.

Because it wasn't.

A forensic audit wasn't routine.

It happened when a board suspected serious misconduct.

The next morning, Carter Global Headquarters looked different.

Employees gathered quietly in the lobby.

Whispers spread across every floor.

Large television screens displayed a brief internal announcement.

Executive Leadership Transition

Chairwoman Isabella Harrington Carter will address employees at 9:00 a.m.

Lucas stared at the screen from inside his former executive office.

Or rather...

The office he was packing.

A security officer waited patiently beside the door.

"You have fifteen minutes remaining, sir."

Lucas looked around the room.

The leather chair.

The framed awards.

The family photographs.

Everything he had believed represented his success.

None of it belonged to him.

He opened the top drawer and found an old photograph.

Eight years earlier.

The day he had become CEO.

Isabella stood beside him, smiling proudly.

He remembered what she had whispered after the ceremony.

"I'm proud of you."

Not...

"I'm proud of us."

She had celebrated his success without asking for recognition.

He closed the drawer slowly.

A knock sounded.

Emma Collins entered.

She remained professional.

"Mr. Carter."

"The Chairwoman asked me to provide this."

She handed him a sealed envelope.

Lucas opened it carefully.

Inside was a single page.

There were no threats.

No insults.

Only a short message.

Lucas,

The audit isn't revenge.

It is accountability.

If you acted honestly, you have nothing to fear.

If you didn't...

The consequences belong to your own choices.

— Isabella

Lucas read it twice.

Then folded the paper.

His hands trembled.

Not because he feared Isabella.

Because he feared what the auditors might find.

At exactly nine o'clock, every employee gathered in the company auditorium.

Others watched from conference rooms around the world.

More than twenty thousand employees waited.

The stage lights came on.

Isabella walked onto the platform alone.

No dramatic music.

No celebration.

Only quiet applause that slowly grew louder.

She waited until the room settled.

Then spoke.

"My name is Isabella Harrington Carter."

"For many years, most of you knew me only as Mrs. Lucas Carter."

A ripple moved through the audience.

"Today, I want you to know me differently."

She paused.

"My grandfather invested in this company because he believed businesses should outlive individual families."

"My father believed leaders should earn trust every day."

"I believe neither wealth nor power excuses dishonesty."

The room remained silent.

"Effective today, every employee will keep their position during the leadership transition."

Several relieved smiles appeared.

"No layoffs."

"No reductions in benefits."

"No retaliation against anyone who simply did their job."

The applause became louder.

She smiled warmly.

"This company was never built by one family."

"It was built by thousands of hardworking people."

"My responsibility is to protect them."

Watching from his office television, Lucas slowly lowered his head.

That single sentence hurt more than losing his title.

Because it reminded him of the leader he had promised to become...

And the man he had eventually become instead.

As the applause echoed through headquarters, investigators entered the executive finance department carrying sealed evidence boxes.

The audit had officially begun.

May you like

And by sunset...

The Carter family's biggest secret would no longer remain hidden.
