Chapter 3

The silence inside the dining hall became suffocating.

No one reached for another drink.

No one touched the expensive dinner that had been prepared to celebrate Lucas's "new beginning."

The only sound came from the steady vibration of smartphones receiving one notification after another.

Lucas stared at the board resolution in disbelief.

"There has to be a mistake."

"There isn't."

Isabella's voice remained calm.

Richard snatched the document from his son.

"This board can't remove us without notice!"

"They can."

Isabella replied.

"The bylaws allow an emergency vote if a majority shareholder determines executive misconduct threatens the corporation."

Richard's face paled.

"You called an emergency meeting..."

"This afternoon."

Lucas looked at her as if seeing her for the first time.

"You planned this."

"No."

She answered quietly.

"I prepared for the possibility."

"There's a difference."

Helen finally found her voice.

"You manipulated everyone!"

Isabella gave a small, almost sad smile.

"For eight years, I attended every shareholder meeting."

"I reviewed every quarterly report."

"I negotiated acquisitions that doubled the company's value."

"You know what your family called me?"

Helen remained silent.

"'Lucas's wife.'"

She looked around the table.

"Not one of you ever asked why investors listened when I spoke."

"Not one of you questioned why international partners requested private meetings with me."

"You assumed I was taking notes."

She paused.

"I was approving billion-dollar transactions."

Lucas shook his head.

"No..."

"I built this company."

"You managed it."

Isabella corrected.

"There is a difference."

Richard slammed his hand onto the table.

"You hid your identity!"

"My grandfather did."

"My father continued the tradition."

"And I honored it."

"Why?"

Richard demanded.

"Because they believed executives should earn respect through competence."

She met his eyes.

"Not through fear or family names."

The words landed harder than any insult.

Emma Collins quietly entered the dining hall.

She wore a charcoal business suit and carried a slim black portfolio.

She stopped beside Isabella.

"Good evening, Chairwoman."

Every head turned.

Lucas whispered,

"Chairwoman?"

Emma nodded respectfully.

"The board has unanimously elected Ms. Carter as Executive Chair."

She handed Isabella the portfolio.

"Your briefing materials for tomorrow morning."

Isabella accepted it without even opening the folder.

"Thank you, Emma."

"There is one more matter."

Emma looked toward Lucas.

"The company security team has already disabled executive access cards."

"The corporate aircraft has been grounded."

"The company vehicles assigned to the Carter family have been recalled."

Richard exploded.

"You can't do that!"

Emma calmly answered,

"They're company assets."

"They no longer belong to authorized executives."

Helen's breathing became shallow.

"Our accounts..."

"Corporate expense accounts are frozen."

Emma replied professionally.

"Personal accounts remain untouched."

Lucas suddenly remembered something.

"The penthouse."

Emma looked at him.

"Owned by Carter Global Holdings."

"The occupancy agreement expires in seventy-two hours."

Sophie's face turned white.

"You mean..."

"We have to leave?"

"I'm afraid so."

Richard staggered backward into his chair.

His entire lifestyle...

His offices.

His staff.

His drivers.

His private club memberships.

Everything had been paid for through corporate privileges.

Privileges that no longer existed.

Lucas looked desperately at Isabella.

"You wouldn't do this."

"I already have."

She answered softly.

He stepped closer.

"Please."

The word surprised everyone.

Including himself.

"You can't destroy my family's life."

For the first time that evening...

Emotion flickered across Isabella's face.

Not anger.

Not satisfaction.

Only disappointment.

"My family spent forty-two years protecting this company."

"My father taught me that leadership means protecting people."

She looked directly at Lucas.

"You taught your employees that loyalty could be replaced."

"You taught your wife that love could be humiliated."

"You taught your family that power belonged to whoever shouted the loudest."

She slowly stood.

"And tonight..."

"You learned the same lesson."

"It never belonged to you."

No one tried to stop her as she walked toward the grand front entrance.

Emma followed quietly behind.

The massive oak doors opened.

Outside, a convoy of black executive SUVs waited beneath the falling snow.

Drivers stood beside each vehicle.

Ready.

Lucas stared through the doorway.

"They're here..."

"For you?"

Emma answered before Isabella could.

"No."

"They're here for the Chairwoman."

One by one, the drivers straightened.

As Isabella stepped onto the front steps, every member of the executive security team acknowledged her with quiet respect.

No speeches.

No applause.

Just disciplined professionalism.

Lucas felt something inside him finally break.

For eight years...

He had believed Isabella was living in his world.

Only now did he understand the truth.

He had been living in hers all along.

And tomorrow morning...

May you like

He would discover that losing his title was only the beginning.

The auditors were already waiting.
