Chapter 24 - Caleb’s Question

Caleb turned forty.
Sophie fifteen.
Josh’s trust long under Caleb’s control.
He worked as structural engineer.
Emma too.
Stable.
Derek seventy? If Derek 30s when Caleb 8, perhaps 32 then, now 64. Caleb 40 implies 32 years later, Derek around 70. Fine. Megan 68. Hmm chapter 21 Megan 60 when Caleb? Caleb was 8 at Megan 36, so Megan 60 when Caleb 32. Chapter 24 Caleb 40 means Megan 68. Fine.
Derek around 70.
He had health issues but lived independently.
At Caleb’s fortieth dinner, he asked me privately:
“If Derek died tomorrow, would you go funeral?”
I thought.
“Yes.”
“Why?”
“He mattered to you.”
“Not you?”
“He mattered to my life.”
Difference.
Then:
“Do you still have anger?”
“Some memory does.”
“Does that count?”
“Yes.”
Then:
“Do you regret not noticing sooner?”
“Yes.”
He looked at me.
“Still?”
“Less.”
Then:
“I was a kid. I hid stuff.”
“I was adult. Some signs.”
He shook head.
“You know what I remember before bathroom?”
“What?”
“You making pancakes.”
I smiled.
“Not working?”
“You worked.”
Then:
“But I didn’t think you chose job over me until Derek said it.”
There.
He had implanted fear.
Then Caleb continued:
“You believed him too.”
“Yes.”
“About job.”
“Yes.”
“So he lied to both.”
“Yes.”
Then:
“That makes me less mad at you.”
I laughed.
“Thank you for review after thirty two years.”
He laughed.
Then he asked one last question.
“Why did you marry him?”
Good question.
“He was charming.”
“Everyone says.”
“He was generous.”
“At first?”
“Yes.”
“Did you see control?”
“Some.”
“Why ignore?”
“I thought compromise.”
Then:
“I was lonely after Josh died.”
Caleb nodded.
“I wanted family.”
Then:
“Was he fake?”
“No.”
That matters.
“He could be kind.”
Then:
“People aren’t fake just because they also have harmful parts.”
He sat.
“Harder.”
“Yes.”
Then:
“Would you tell someone in your situation to leave earlier?”
“Yes.”
No romanticizing.
Then Sophie called.
Dinner.
We went inside.
Derek arrived later with cane? If invited by Caleb. He was older, slower.
He greeted.
No tension.
At table Sophie spilled gravy.
Everyone laughed.
Derek handed napkin.
No one made a story.
Then after dinner, Derek quietly told Caleb:
“I’m glad you grew up better than me.”
Caleb replied:
“I had help.”
He looked at me.
Then Derek:
“So did I. I ignored some.”
Responsibility.
Then night ended.
No cliffhanger because chapter 24 needs lead to final maybe Derek hospitalized? Let's add at end: Two weeks later, Susan? already gone. Derek suffered major stroke and died? Could close. But chapter 25 maybe final after his death and all arcs. Let's do.
Two weeks later, Caleb called.
“Mom.”
“What?”
“Derek had a stroke.”
Severe.
Hospital.
Caleb was driving there.
“Do you want to come?”
I looked at old life.
Then:
“Yes.”
Not because reconciliation.
May you like
Because closure had already happened.
Death did not need to do the work.
