Chapter 19 - Derek Asks for Nothing

At fifty eight, Derek suffered a mild heart attack.

Susan called Caleb.

Not me.

Caleb visited hospital.

Derek recovered.

He asked:

“Did Megan know?”

“No.”

“Don’t call.”

Good.

No using illness to gain sympathy.

Then after discharge Derek wrote me only because legal documents? No need.

He asked Caleb:

“If something happens to me, there’s a small life policy. Susan beneficiary. Anything left in estate goes Susan then charity. Nothing involving you.”

Caleb said:

“You don’t have to explain.”

“I want no surprises.”

Transparency.

Then Derek made a will with independent attorney.

No Megan.

No Caleb.

Appropriate.

Then Caleb asked:

“Should he leave me something?”

“Do you want?”

“No.”

“Then no.”

No financial apology inheritance.

Then Derek eventually started speaking at accountability group? Could be useful but not heroic.

He participated in court approved batterer intervention alumni sessions for men after release, sharing his experience when asked.

Not public influencer.

No book.

Good.

Then one participant asked:

“Did your wife forgive?”

Derek reportedly answered:

“That is not metric.”

Good.

Then:

“My job was to stop doing harm whether she forgave or not.”

Caleb told.

I believed change more because he stopped seeking validation.

Then my own relationship.

I dated occasionally.

Never remarried.

Not vow.

Preference.

Some years I was single.

Happy.

No need romantic replacement to prove happy ending.

Then Caleb and Emma announced pregnancy.

I became unbearable.

Spreadsheets.

Emma laughed.

“No.”

I deleted.

Then son? Let's have granddaughter Lily maybe. Child born. Caleb becomes father.

Derek asked through Caleb if he should meet baby.

Caleb said later.

No pressure.

At six months, supervised? Not needed, Derek safe now adult relation. Caleb invited to family brunch.

Derek held baby.

Cried.

He did not call himself Grandpa until Caleb said:

“She can call you Derek until we decide.”

Derek laughed.

“Fair.”

Later child called him Grandpa Derek naturally perhaps.

No claim.

Then I watched Caleb handle crying baby.

At 2 a.m. during visit, baby screamed.

Caleb paced.

Whispered:

“You’re okay.”

No shame.

No cold water.

May you like

Cycle broken not by speeches.

By a tired father being gentle when no one applauded.
