Chapter 6 - The Woman in My Clothes

Allison Shaw was thirty nine.

Public records described her as a compliance consultant working abroad.

Travel records showed repeated entries under different names.

She did not live abroad.

She moved between Brooks Haven facilities, private banks, property offices, and temporary residences.

Evelyn kept her outside the visible family because Allison’s anonymity made her useful.

Richard knew she existed.

He claimed Evelyn became pregnant before their marriage and placed Allison with relatives.

Years later, Evelyn brought her into the foundation.

“Did Daniel know?” I asked.

“Not until he was twenty five.”

“Did Serena know?”

“From the beginning.”

The Brooks family portrait above the mansion fireplace contained Daniel, Richard, Evelyn, and me.

Allison’s absence was not rejection.

It was camouflage.

The search of Victoria’s office uncovered Allison’s training files.

My signature appeared hundreds of times.

My posture had been analyzed.

My walking speed.

The angle at which I carried my handbag.

The phrases I used during bank calls.

Photographs documented my clothing before public appointments.

Someone inside the mansion sent her schedules.

Daniel.

The final training video showed Evelyn adjusting Allison’s scarf.

“You do not have to look exactly like her,” Evelyn said. “People see documents before faces.”

Allison replied:

“What happens after Emily enters Havenwell?”

“You become the version of her banks recognize.”

They intended to replace my legal presence without replacing me publicly.

I would remain alive inside a controlled facility.

Allison would appear for limited transactions.

Edited video and digital voice would handle the rest.

If I died, the life insurance paid them.

If I survived, my identity continued working outside without me.

Officer Harris located Allison through a vehicle registered to Marlowe Residential.

She surrendered after a short pursuit ended near an airport parking garage.

Inside the car were two Emily Carter passports, three phones, the missing deed seal, and medication from Dr. Moore.

Allison requested counsel.

She later offered a statement without guaranteed immunity.

She admitted entering the bank as me.

She admitted using my fingerprint certificate.

She admitted attending property closings through remote video.

She denied knowing Daniel intended physical violence.

“The plan required Emily calm,” she said.

“You knew she was being drugged,” the investigator answered.

“I knew she received medication.”

“Without consent.”

“I did not ask.”

Not asking had become the family’s favorite form of permission.

Allison claimed Evelyn was not the original architect.

The Brooks Continuity structure existed before Evelyn controlled it.

Richard created the first identity preservation company during his construction crisis.

The company allowed owners to complete transactions during illness through approved representatives.

At first, the representatives were lawful agents.

Then Richard used one to hide assets from creditors.

Evelyn learned the system could do more.

Allison looked toward the observation camera.

“Richard taught us that the person inside the documents matters more than the body.”

Richard denied ordering impersonation.

His original company records proved he created substitute signature templates and representative identities.

He said they were used with consent.

One early client file contained no consent.

An elderly investor died before discovering Richard had moved his share.

The transaction saved Richard’s company.

It also taught Evelyn that identity could become property.

I confronted Richard in Lydia’s office.

“You did not only open the door.”

“No.”

“You built the lock.”

“Yes.”

“Did Thomas know?”

“He discovered it years later.”

“Did he threaten you?”

“He demanded every record.”

“Why did he let me marry Daniel?”

“He tried to stop the relationship.”

My father had questioned Daniel repeatedly.

I called it control.

Daniel said Thomas disliked any man who could not be intimidated.

Thomas died before our engagement.

Richard showed me a letter Thomas sent him.

Keep Daniel away from Emily until she knows what Brooks Haven became.

Richard never delivered it.

“Why?”

“Evelyn threatened to expose my original fraud and destroy the foundation.”

“So you protected the foundation.”

“I protected myself.”

The correction came before I offered it.

Richard surrendered one more key.

It opened a locked room beneath the mansion’s wine cellar.

Daniel believed the space held old electrical equipment.

Richard had installed the room during renovations.

He said Evelyn stored original continuity files there.

We entered under police and legal supervision.

The room contained shelves of property deeds, medical evaluations, insurance policies, and identity kits.

Twenty seven women appeared in the files.

Nora.

June.

Alice.

Dorothy.

My name.

Each file contained an exit plan.

The Emily file was the thickest.

One page listed the exact family gathering where Daniel slapped me.

Objective: provoke visible instability, remove subject from residence, initiate abandonment record.

Another page read:

Physical force acceptable only if no facial injury remains after seventy two hours.

Daniel had not invented violence in the moment.

The plan allowed it.

He simply struck harder than Evelyn intended.

At the rear of the room stood a sealed cabinet labeled Carter Meridian Origin.

The files inside showed that Evelyn knew my family long before I met Daniel.

She had attended meetings with my father.

She had studied my trust.

She had helped arrange the charity event where Daniel first approached me.

My marriage began inside a property acquisition plan.

Continue to the next part: Emily discovers that Evelyn selected her as Daniel’s future wife before their first conversation.
