Chapter 5 - The Nights I Could Not Remember

I remembered waking after Sunday dinners with headaches.

Daniel said wine affected me more because fertility medication made me emotional.

Evelyn said I drank too quickly whenever I felt excluded.

I began limiting myself to one glass.

The missing hours continued.

The hair analysis showed exposure every four to six weeks.

The schedule matched gatherings at the mansion and Evelyn’s apartment.

A housekeeper named Maria Santos contacted Lydia after seeing news of the account freeze.

Maria had worked inside the mansion for two years.

Daniel dismissed her after she questioned a bottle hidden behind the wine cabinet.

She kept a photograph.

The label belonged to Dr. Moore’s clinic.

The medication could produce sleep, confusion, and memory loss.

Maria also preserved a small sealed vial after Evelyn told her to empty the cabinet.

“I did not know who would believe me,” Maria said during a recorded interview.

“Why did you keep it?”

“My mother lost a house after a doctor called her confused. I recognized the way they spoke about you.”

She had tried to warn me.

Daniel intercepted a message and told me Maria stole jewelry.

I approved her dismissal without speaking to her.

“I am sorry,” I said.

“You believed your husband.”

“That harmed you.”

“Yes.”

Her answer was simple.

Trusting Daniel explained my choice.

It did not erase Maria’s lost income or reputation.

I authorized payment of her unpaid wages and legal costs through an independent process, not as a condition for silence.

The mansion server contained footage from one of the nights I could not remember.

I lay asleep on the library sofa.

Daniel lifted my right hand.

Evelyn held a tablet.

They pressed my thumb against the screen.

A document opened.

Carter Meridian authorization.

Daniel moved my hand three times.

The first approval released insurance records.

The second granted Brooks Advisory access to corporate correspondence.

The third allowed creation of a temporary digital identity certificate.

Evelyn said:

“Her thumb is not enough for the deed.”

Daniel answered:

“We only need the voice after that.”

He played fragments from the mansion system.

My voice approved transactions I had never seen.

Richard entered the library twelve minutes later.

He stared at me.

He looked at the tablet.

Then he removed it from Daniel’s hand.

For one moment, I believed he would wake me.

He did not.

He photographed the screen and left.

Richard watched the video beside us.

“I was collecting proof.”

“You left me unconscious beside them.”

“I feared they would destroy everything if I confronted them.”

“You chose the evidence.”

“Yes.”

“Did you check whether I was breathing normally?”

“No.”

The answer removed any possibility of calling him my protector.

He had done something useful.

He had also left me in danger.

Both truths remained.

Richard’s photographs helped Lydia trace the digital certificate.

He anonymously mailed them to her months earlier but provided no names.

Lydia could not act without a client or confirmed victim.

“Why did you not tell me?” I asked him.

“Because Daniel said Evelyn would reveal the original Brooks Haven fraud and blame me.”

“She should have revealed it.”

“Yes.”

“You protected yourself.”

“Yes.”

The investigation found another betrayal in Daniel’s medical records.

The vasectomy report was genuine.

The clinic notes showed he requested secrecy because he feared a child would strengthen my control over Carter Meridian.

That fear made little legal sense.

A child would not reduce his rights because he had none.

Daniel believed what Evelyn told him.

She claimed my father’s trust transferred Carter Meridian to a spouse if I died childless, but passed it to a child if I became a mother.

The actual trust transferred control to an independent charitable board in either situation.

Evelyn had lied to Daniel too.

She used his fear of losing inheritance to encourage the procedure.

He still chose to hide it from me.

He still watched me suffer.

Manipulation did not erase agency.

The mansion safe held another file.

Emily Exit Plan.

The cover listed a date one month after the family gathering.

The plan assumed I would already be inside Havenwell.

Daniel would petition for temporary ownership management.

Evelyn would supervise household inventory.

Richard’s forged signature would support family consensus.

The mansion deed would transfer to Marlowe Residential Holdings.

The company belonged to Evelyn’s sister, Victoria Shaw.

Victoria was the woman who attended the Vermont spa using Evelyn’s card.

She also ran the care facility where Nora and June were nearly placed.

The family had created a circle.

Victoria supplied false alibis.

Evelyn impersonated me.

Daniel controlled documents.

Dr. Moore created diagnoses.

Martin Cole filed petitions.

Richard’s old signatures supplied legitimacy.

My money funded all of them.

Police searched Victoria’s facility.

She was gone.

Her office contained clothing in my size, wigs matching my hair, copies of my identification, and photographs of the mansion’s private rooms.

One photograph showed a woman dressed as me standing beside the deed safe.

The date came from a night I had been sedated.

The woman turned partly toward the camera.

She was not Evelyn.

She was younger.

Richard recognized her.

“Allison Shaw.”

Evelyn’s daughter from a relationship before she married Richard.

Daniel had a half sister he never mentioned.

Allison had spent three years learning to move through financial offices as Emily Carter.

Continue to the next part: A hidden Brooks daughter has been impersonating Emily while Daniel’s family prepared to erase the real woman.
