Chapter 9 - The Empty Hospital Crib

The video showed Vanessa wearing a nurse’s coat beside Eleanor’s incubator.
A masked nurse stood near the door.
Vanessa lifted my daughter carefully, almost tenderly, and looked directly into the security camera.
“Bring the remote to the basement,” she said. “Or your baby disappears like Rebecca’s did.”
The screen went black.
Rebecca made a broken sound.
“My baby?”
Daniel looked up from where the officers held him.
Vanessa had revealed something he had never told her.
Rebecca had given birth before she disappeared.
Her child had survived.
Detective Brooks ordered the hospital locked down, but the nurse’s access card showed that Eleanor had already been removed through a private service elevator.
Vanessa had planned the kidnapping before entering the greenhouse.
She was returning to the mansion with my daughter.
We reached the estate eleven minutes later.
The Christmas lights still glowed above the doorway. The divorce papers remained frozen beneath a layer of snow on the steps.
Inside, the mansion’s red emergency lights had begun flashing again.
Vanessa’s voice came through the intercom.
“Claire enters alone.”
I took the remote from my pocket.
My mother caught my wrist.
“The basement has a manual gas control. Vanessa may flood the archive.”
“My daughter is down there.”
“She wants you emotional.”
“I am emotional.”
I looked at the woman who had stayed hidden while Daniel destroyed my life.
“But I am not helpless.”
I entered the mansion.
The front doors locked behind me.
Vanessa waited at the bottom of the basement stairs, holding Eleanor inside a white blanket.
My baby was crying.
The sound tore through every part of me.
“Give her to me.”
“The remote first.”
I held it out.
Vanessa smiled.
“You thought Daniel was the cruel one.”
“He was easier to understand.”
“He wanted money. I wanted proof that your mother could be frightened.”
Vanessa’s hatred had never truly been about Daniel.
My mother had exposed the clinic where Vanessa altered medical records. The investigation destroyed Vanessa’s career, but political allies buried the charges.
Daniel became her weapon against our family.
I moved down one step.
Vanessa raised a hand.
“The remote.”
I placed it on the floor and kicked it toward her.
She picked it up while holding Eleanor against her shoulder.
“Open the archive,” she ordered.
“I cannot from here.”
“You built the system.”
“My mother designed the foundation.”
Vanessa pressed the gun against Eleanor’s blanket.
“Then call her.”
I did.
My mother answered immediately.
“Claire?”
“Come to the basement.”
Vanessa smiled.
“Tell her to come alone.”
Before I could repeat the instruction, a metallic sound came from behind the archive wall.
Someone was already inside the hidden chamber.
Three slow knocks echoed through the basement.
Rebecca, who had remained outside, screamed through my phone.
“That is the signal my daughter used when Daniel locked us apart.”
Vanessa’s face changed.
The person inside the wall was not one of Daniel’s victims.
May you like
It was Rebecca’s missing child.
Continue to the next part: The child Daniel believed had vanished years ago has been living inside the conspiracy under a name Claire already knows.
