Chapter 10 - The Second Nursery

My mother entered the basement with both hands raised.
Vanessa kept Eleanor against her chest and ordered her toward the archive.
“Open it.”
My mother looked at the wall.
“Who is inside?”
Three more knocks answered.
Rebecca’s voice came through my phone.
“My daughter was named Lily.”
My mother’s eyes filled with recognition.
“There was a nurse at Vanessa’s clinic,” she whispered. “A young woman named Lily Carter.”
I remembered the masked nurse from the hospital video.
Vanessa had not kidnapped Eleanor alone.
Rebecca’s missing daughter had helped her.
The archive door opened from the inside.
A woman in a hospital uniform stepped into the red emergency light.
She removed her mask.
Lily was in her early twenties. She had Rebecca’s eyes and Daniel’s dark hair.
Daniel had not merely imprisoned his first wife.
He had raised their daughter inside Vanessa’s network, teaching her that Rebecca had abandoned her.
Lily looked at the woman’s voice coming through my phone.
“That is not my mother.”
Rebecca began sobbing.
“Lily, I never left you.”
Vanessa moved closer to her.
“They are lying. Take the baby.”
Lily reached toward Eleanor.
I stepped between them.
“She is your sister.”
Lily froze.
Vanessa’s expression sharpened.
“Do not listen to her.”
“Daniel is Eleanor’s father,” I continued. “And he is yours.”
Lily looked toward the remote in Vanessa’s hand.
“What did he do to Rebecca?”
“He locked her away because she knew how he chose his victims.”
Vanessa raised her gun toward me.
Lily caught her wrist.
Eleanor began screaming.
My mother rushed forward and took the baby as the two women struggled.
The weapon fired into the ceiling.
The gas alarm began shrieking.
Vanessa had pressed the remote during the fight.
The archive system announced a manual release inside the basement.
My mother looked toward the control panel.
“She opened the gas valve.”
Red numbers appeared above the door.
Ninety seconds.
Lily struck Vanessa and seized the gun.
“Shut it off.”
Vanessa laughed from the floor.
“Daniel changed the code.”
Police pounded against the locked front doors upstairs.
I ran to the panel.
The screen required a six digit number.
Daniel had always used the same dates for passwords.
Our wedding anniversary failed.
His birthday failed.
Eleanor’s birth time failed.
The countdown reached fifty seconds.
Rebecca’s voice came through my phone.
“Try Lily’s birthday.”
Lily stared at the screen.
“I do not know it.”
Rebecca whispered the date.
The code worked.
The gas valve closed.
The alarm continued, but the countdown stopped at eleven seconds.
Vanessa’s laughter disappeared.
Lily lowered the gun.
Sirens and breaking glass echoed upstairs as police entered the mansion.
My mother placed Eleanor in my arms.
For the first time since the snowy steps, I allowed myself to believe we had survived.
Daniel was in custody.
Vanessa was trapped.
Rebecca had found her daughter.
The mansion and trust remained mine.
Then Henry entered the basement carrying the original trust document.
His face was gray.
“I found the final amendment.”
My mother turned toward him.
“You told me Daniel never received it.”
“He did not.”
Henry opened the document.
“The amendment was filed six months before Claire married Daniel. It names another person as Eleanor’s legal guardian if Claire becomes incapacitated.”
“Who?”
Henry looked directly at my mother.
“You.”
My mother stepped backward.
“That is impossible.”
Henry turned the final page toward me.
My signature appeared beneath the amendment.
The date showed that I had signed it two years after my mother’s supposed death.
I had never seen the document.
Lily picked up Vanessa’s fallen phone.
“There is a video.”
She pressed play.
The recording showed me sitting inside Vanessa’s private clinic. My eyes were unfocused as I signed the guardianship amendment.
A woman stood behind my chair with one hand resting on my shoulder.
My mother.
I looked at her across the basement.
“You said you were hiding from Daniel.”
“I was.”
“Then why were you inside Vanessa’s clinic with me?”
My mother’s face became calm in a way I had never seen before.
Upstairs, officers shouted that Daniel had escaped during transport.
The mansion lights went out.
In the darkness, someone took Eleanor from my arms.
A door opened inside the archive.
By the time the emergency lights returned, my mother, Henry, and my baby were gone.
Only the black remote remained on the floor.
Its screen displayed a live camera feed from a hidden room beneath the mansion.
A second nursery.
My mother stood beside Eleanor’s crib while Daniel entered through another door.
He leaned down and kissed her cheek.
Then he looked into the camera.
“Claire,” he said, “your mother chose the real family long before I threw you into the snow.”
May you like
The feed cut to black.
Continue to the next part: Claire survived Daniel’s betrayal, but the person who designed the mansion may also have designed every trap inside her marriage.
