Chapter 9 - The Company I May Never Have Owned

First Continental had been built over an older private bank purchased by my father before Carter Dynamics received its first major investment.

The service door behind the vault led into a tunnel connecting three buildings on the block.

Reed knew it existed because Thomas used it to move sensitive documents without entering public lobbies.

Security found Nadia’s coat near the eastern exit.

Blood marked the sleeve.

No bodies.

No Continuity Annex.

I returned to Carter Dynamics before dawn.

Federal agents occupied the executive floor. Directors joined through secure video. Investors were already selling shares after rumors spread that the founder’s ownership documents had disappeared.

Malcolm had vanished from his home.

Jason remained in custody.

Tiffany was under protective supervision.

Reed and Nadia controlled the one object capable of deciding who owned the company.

My father’s note waited on the conference table.

AVA, YOU WERE NEVER THE FOUNDER.

Beneath it was a copy of Carter Dynamics’ original incorporation record.

Founder: Thomas Carter.

Chief Technical Officer: Ava Carter.

I had been twenty one when we incorporated. I created the first product, wrote most of the code, recruited the engineers, and lived inside the office for three years.

My father handled early legal filings.

The document suggested he issued all founder shares to himself, then later transferred a portion to me under conditions hidden inside the Continuity Trust.

Every annual report since then identified me as founder and controlling shareholder.

If the original filing was genuine, my control had always depended on a revocable grant.

Reed had represented the company from the beginning.

He would know.

A video call entered the board system.

Nadia appeared on screen.

She sat inside an empty office with the stolen prenup on the desk.

Reed was not visible.

“Ava, suspend the federal search.”

“Where is Martin?”

“He is safe.”

“Did you shoot at Tiffany?”

“No. Malcolm sent the shooter.”

“Why are you helping Reed?”

“I am helping the company.”

The words sounded exactly like my father.

Nadia said Carter Dynamics faced collapse if the Continuity Annex became public. The Laurent claim, Jason’s fraudulent transfers, and evidence that trust votes had been manipulated would trigger years of litigation.

Government contracts would disappear.

Thousands of employees could lose jobs.

She wanted me to sign a transition agreement naming her chief executive and transferring my voting rights into the trust.

“You spent six weeks helping me investigate.”

“I spent six weeks measuring whether you would choose the company over yourself.”

“I built the company.”

“You built the technology. Thomas built the structure.”

The distinction was designed to reduce my life to labor performed inside someone else’s ownership.

“What happens to Jason?”

“Prosecution.”

“Malcolm?”

“If we find him.”

“Tiffany?”

“Her claim is settled privately.”

“And me?”

“You remain chief product architect.”

She offered me my own work without authority.

I almost admired the elegance of the theft.

“Where is Reed?”

Nadia looked beyond the camera.

A struggle sounded off screen.

Then Reed moved into view with blood near his temple and his hands tied.

“Ava, do not sign anything.”

Nadia struck him and pulled him away.

That answered one question.

Reed had not willingly stolen the documents.

He had entered the bank with Nadia under coercion or deception.

The note in my father’s handwriting could still be hers.

Nadia had access to company authentication systems.

She could synthesize Thomas’s voice and biometric votes.

But the videos inside the Nevada hangar existed on old physical tape.

Someone began the plan long before modern synthetic media.

“Who is giving you orders?” I asked.

Nadia’s expression changed.

“I am correcting Thomas’s mistake.”

“What mistake?”

“Choosing you.”

The call ended.

Marcus traced the signal to the Carter family’s original office above the tire shop where I wrote our first code.

The building had been vacant for years.

Federal teams surrounded it.

I entered through the rear with Marcus despite every instruction to remain outside.

The second floor smelled of dust and old rubber.

My first whiteboard still hung on one wall beneath layers of grime.

Nadia waited beside it.

Reed sat tied to a chair.

The original prenup and annex lay inside a metal case.

Nadia held a gun.

“You were supposed to stay at headquarters.”

“You know me better than that.”

“I know exactly how you respond when someone you trust is in danger.”

Thomas’s method again.

Use another person to control my movement.

Nadia said Malcolm recruited Jason and Tiffany, but she designed the board plan. The pool cover had not been part of her instructions.

Jason added it because he wanted an ending that did not require divorce litigation.

Malcolm allowed it.

Nadia learned only after the livestream began.

“Why not stop him?”

“Because your death would have activated the trust transition automatically.”

My survival complicated her cleaner succession.

Reed spoke through a split lip.

“She cannot open the final annex.”

Nadia looked at him.

“Be quiet.”

“There is another signature page.”

I approached slowly.

“What signature?”

Reed said the agreement inside the vault was not the first original.

Thomas created two executed versions.

One gave me control.

The other revoked it.

Only one could be valid.

Nadia had stolen the version giving me control.

The revocation agreement remained hidden in the original office.

“Where?” she demanded.

Reed looked at the whiteboard.

Behind the old frame was a wall safe.

Nadia forced me to open it using my fingerprint.

Inside lay another blue leather agreement.

The final page carried my father’s signature.

Below it was mine.

I had no memory of signing.

The date was my twenty first birthday.

Nadia smiled.

“You surrendered the company before you ever knew you owned it.”

Then Reed pointed toward the witness line.

The signature belonged to Charles Laurent.
