Chapter 7 - The Daughter Charles Never Claimed

The Nevada hangar stood beyond a dry stretch of desert outside Reno.
Federal vehicles approached without lights before dawn.
The code Jason provided opened the outer gate.
Inside, six aircraft rested beneath a roof large enough to hide an entire company. Three carried Laurent Aviation markings. One had belonged to my father.
The same tail number reported destroyed in the crash.
Its metal skin was unburned.
Marcus looked at me.
“Your father changed aircraft before takeoff.”
The wreckage recovered nine years earlier came from another plane painted with the same registration.
The crash had been staged.
Agents entered the office wing.
They found blood near a freight elevator and Tiffany’s broken bracelet on the floor.
No people.
The underground level contained medical rooms, surveillance equipment, and walls covered with photographs of Carter Dynamics executives.
My life appeared in chronological order.
College graduation.
First funding round.
Wedding.
Product launches.
Private dinners.
The pool terrace during construction.
Thomas had watched everything.
On one desk lay Tiffany’s original birth certificate.
Name: Emily Laurent.
Mother: Rebecca Laurent.
Father: blank.
A second certificate was filed three months later.
Name: Tiffany Grace Hale.
Parents: Daniel and Monica Hale.
She had been adopted and later reclaimed the Laurent surname using sealed documents arranged by Malcolm.
Jason had told the truth about one thing.
Charles Laurent was not listed as her father.
A video file explained more.
Charles sat inside the hangar eleven years earlier. He looked exhausted, frightened, and alive several weeks after his supposed boating death.
Thomas stood beside the camera.
Charles said he had discovered my father was diverting early Carter Dynamics patents into a separate defense company. When he objected, Thomas accused him of financial misconduct.
Charles planned to tell me.
Thomas staged his death first.
“You let Ava believe I betrayed her,” Charles said.
“I kept her focused.”
“You kept her controllable.”
The recording ended before revealing what happened next.
Another file showed Thomas meeting a pregnant woman.
Rebecca Laurent.
Tiffany’s mother.
She had worked as Thomas’s private intelligence analyst.
Tiffany was Thomas Carter’s biological daughter.
My half sister.
The discovery did not create instant affection.
It created nausea.
My father had placed his secret daughter beside my husband.
He had turned both of us into tools pointed at each other.
Tiffany’s claim to the company did not come from Charles.
It came through Thomas.
The Continuity Annex had hidden the truth by calling her the lawful Laurent heir.
A third video began automatically.
Tiffany sat inside the same room where the hostage message had been filmed.
No restraints.
No blood.
She looked calm.
“Ava, if you found this, the board plan failed.”
Marcus reached for the control panel.
The video continued.
“I did not know Jason intended to push you. I knew Malcolm wanted the footage. I knew the drops were meant to make you appear drunk. I accepted that because Thomas promised to prove who my father was.”
She touched the bruise on her face.
“The kidnapping video was staged. The bruise was makeup.”
Anger moved through me more cleanly than shock.
Tiffany had called me from the apartment, pretended to be attacked, and disappeared voluntarily.
“Why?” I whispered at the screen.
She answered as though she heard me.
“Because Thomas said you would never open the annex unless you believed someone was in danger.”
My father had studied my weaknesses as carefully as Jason did.
He knew I would ignore threats to my company longer than threats to another person.
Tiffany looked away from the camera.
“I am sorry about the pool. I did not know the cover was programmed. Malcolm said Jason added that himself.”
That shifted one question without resolving the crime.
Jason may have intended murder independently.
Or Malcolm may have blamed him.
Every conspirator carried only enough truth to protect the next lie.
The freight elevator activated.
Agents raised their weapons.
It opened onto an empty platform holding a single metal case.
Inside was the stolen videotape labeled THOMAS CARTER CONFESSION.
Marcus found an old player in the office.
My father appeared on the screen.
“I staged my death because Carter Dynamics was becoming vulnerable to Ava’s judgment.”
He spoke as if explaining a business reorganization.
“She is brilliant, but sentiment controls her. She refuses profitable contracts when she dislikes the client’s ethics. She trusts employees over shareholders. She believes innovation should be restrained by conscience.”
I watched the man who funded my beginning describe my humanity as a defect.
Thomas continued.
“Jason will test whether she can be guided through marriage. Malcolm will test whether she can be guided through governance. Tiffany will test whether blood matters more than loyalty.”
At the end, he gave one instruction.
“If all three fail, activate the founder replacement.”
A door opened behind us.
Tiffany stood in the hangar wearing jeans and a black coat.
She looked younger without the silver party makeup.
“I know who the replacement is,” she said.

Before she could name the person, a rifle shot shattered the office window.
Continue to the next part: Tiffany returns alive and prepares to identify the person Thomas trained to replace Ava before a sniper attacks the hangar.
