Chapter 10 - THOMAS VALE

Thomas Vale disappeared from the hospital contractor’s schedule two days after police began asking questions.
Not vanished.
He retained counsel.
Then came in voluntarily.
He admitted knowing Lena.
They worked together six years earlier.
Why was he assigned to my hospital case?
Lena requested him through the private financial coordination service.
The hospital allowed outside financial advisers to meet patients only with consent.
Who provided consent?
Daniel.
I did not.
Thomas should have confirmed with me.
He did not.
Mistake or participation?
His emails showed Lena said:
Mara expects you.
False.
Thomas believed her.
Maybe.
Then she sent the packet.
“Make sure page six is completed.”
Page six.
Temporary spousal authority.
Thomas asked:
“Does hospital counsel need review?”
Lena:
No. Private estate document.
Thomas:
Then why am I presenting it?
Lena:
Daniel wants everything in one place.
Thomas agreed.
Improper.
Not proof he knew murder plan.
Then another email:
Thomas:
If she is medicated, I will not obtain signature.
Lena:
She will be lucid enough.
That phrase bothered him.
He later told investigators:
“I thought she was just controlling.”
She was.
But control can still become criminal when it crosses consent.
Thomas denied being “Mr. Vale” on Daniel’s mysterious call.
Daniel listened to his voice.
Not the same.
Another Vale.
Common surname?
Maybe.
Storage locker documents had payments to:
VALE STRATEGIC SERVICES.
Owner:
Martin Vale.
Thomas’s father.
Former Harbor Crest executive.
There.
Martin Vale had been involved in B17 twelve years earlier.
My father’s notes named him.
One of the people who negotiated the original settlement.
Retired now.
Seventy two.
Living in Arizona.
Lena called him after Blackstone.
Phone records confirmed.
What did they discuss?
Martin agreed to interview through counsel.
He said Lena called panicked.
“Mara fell.”
“How?”
“She said accident.”
“Did she mention signature?”
“Yes.”
“What did she ask?”
“How to keep B17 from reopening if Mara died before signing.”
My skin went cold.
Martin advised:
Do nothing.
Report policy irregularity.
Preserve records.
He told her B17 could not be ethically or safely closed after an insured died under suspicious circumstances.
That actually helped him.
Then why payments from Lena?
Consulting.
Legitimate enough.
Was Martin above her?
No.
He was the person she called because he knew the old case.
Daniel had assumed mysterious senior authority.
Another example of limited knowledge.
Then Martin gave investigators something my father never had.
Original B17 correspondence.
He had kept copies after retirement.
One letter from Henry Ellison.
My father.
Martin,
If Harbor Crest ever issues another policy where the insured does not know the coverage exists, reopen every file.
Every file.
My policy triggered exactly that condition.
B17 was not merely money.
It was a warning mechanism my father designed.
Lena knew.
Paul knew.
Martin knew.
That was why my signature mattered so much.
If I acknowledged the policy, the trigger disappeared.
Then Martin said something else.
“Your father did not trust Lena.”
I stared.
“She was twenty two.”
“Exactly.”
“How did he know her?”
“She interned at Harbor Crest.”
I had met Lena in college.
I knew she interned somewhere in finance.
I never remembered the name.
Harbor Crest.
My father investigated the firm while my best friend worked there.
“Did he tell me?”
“No.”
“Why?”
“He said you would think he was judging your friend.”
Another person protecting me through silence.
That decision had consequences twelve years later.
Martin found an old intern access report.
Lena had viewed B17 files during her internship.
Unauthorized.
Why?
She told supervisors she clicked accidentally.
Maybe.
My father wrote a note:
PRICE, LENA. FRIEND OF MARA. KEEP AWAY FROM FAMILY MATERIAL.
My father knew she was my friend.
He worried about conflict.
Then one attachment.
A personnel memo.
Lena had been recruited to Harbor Crest after graduation by Paul Merrick.
Reason:
Strong client relationship potential through existing personal network.
Existing personal network.
Names listed.
Including mine.
Before I ever married Daniel, Harbor Crest already viewed me as a valuable prospect.
Then the final line:
Potential future household introduction via Daniel Ellison.
I stared.
May you like
Daniel and I had not met yet.
Continue to the next part: Harbor Crest records mention Daniel as a possible route to Mara before Mara and Daniel ever met.
