Chapter 22 - Kelsey Returns to the Lake

Five years after wedding, Kelsey came to Cedar Hollow.
Only because I invited her.
The decision surprised everyone.
Especially me.
Why now?
Because Aunt Susan asked:
“Do you still need her never to stand there again?”
I thought for days.
No.
I did not need it.
So I sent through Laura:
If Kelsey wishes, she may attend the June public garden workshop as any other registered guest. No private house access beyond event areas. No photography for commercial use.
Kelsey registered.
Paid full fee.
Arrived alone.
Teal dress? No. Simple jeans and white blouse.
She looked older.
So did I.
At gate, she stopped.
“Hi.”
“Hi.”
No hug.
She looked toward garden.
“Oh.”
“What?”
“It’s beautiful.”
“Thank you.”
She saw white peony.
“Is that…”
“One of originals survived.”
Her eyes filled.
“I didn’t know.”
“No.”
She looked down.
“I’m sorry.”
“I know.”
Workshop continued.
She followed rules.
Did not monopolize.
Did not ask to enter upstairs.
At end, she approached.
“Can I ask one question?”
“Yes.”
“Why now?”
“Because not wanting you here was starting to feel like maintaining something I no longer needed.”
She nodded.
“Does that mean we’re family again?”
I looked at her.
“We never stopped being related.”
She smiled sadly.
“Fair.”
“What it means is you were safe here today.”
“I was.”
“If that continues, maybe there are other days.”
No promise.
No restoration of old closeness.
May you like
She accepted.
That was enough.
