Chapter 9 - Sophia Talks

Sophia’s proffer lasted six hours.

I did not attend.

Victims do not need to watch every confession.

Priya summarized only after cooperation agreement became formal enough.

Sophia admitted:

She and Marcus were having an affair.

She knew Marcus was in financial trouble.

She believed my death would leave both of them money.

She helped create Sovereign Coast.

She helped obtain estate documents.

She altered one hotel transfer draft.

She lied about her relationship to my company staff.

She participated in earlier efforts to make me ill.

Then the sentence I had dreaded:

“Marcus suggested making Victoria sick first.”

Not dead?

At first.

According to Sophia, the original plan was to make me appear chronically ill.

Why?

So I would reduce work.

Sign management papers.

Let Marcus “help.”

Then Marcus realized my current estate structure still blocked him.

They escalated.

Sophia said:

“I told him we should stop.”

Do messages support?

Sometimes.

One:

This is getting too far.

Marcus:

You wanted this.

Sophia:

Not prison.

Not moral objection.

Fear.

Then another week later:

Fine. Friday.

She rejoined.

No innocence.

Then who obtained toxic compound?

Sophia refused detail at first, then admitted she procured it through an illicit source tied to an acquaintance.

We do not need operational specifics.

Prosecutors independently verified purchase trail enough.

No step-by-step.

Then prior exposures.

Sophia admitted adding small unknown-to-me amounts on “several occasions.”

She would not specify exact doses? She could tell investigators, but story avoids. She said Marcus did others.

The purpose initially illness.

Then final dinner.

Marcus planned concentrated amount intended to kill.

Sophia knew.

She delivered vial earlier that day? But camera shows paper bag two nights earlier. Could be final vial in bag.

Then why did she burst apartment?

She expected Marcus to text after I consumed.

He did not.

She panicked.

Came.

When she saw him on floor, “what went wrong” escaped.

Good.

Then Marcus’s role.

He chose dinner.

He cooked.

He poured.

Camera.

Then Sophia admitted she had watched live? Did she have camera? No. She expected.

Then the forged Miami transfer.

Sophia created Sovereign entity.

Marcus downloaded my signature from a prior hotel resolution.

Sophia inserted image into draft.

They intended to send me a “confirmation package” while ill and hope I electronically signed without reading? Perhaps. Better: They intended to circulate copied version to a prospective lender/investor as if preliminary approved, then use my expected incapacity/death to pressure board. It would likely fail. Still fraud.

Then overbilling.

Sophia admitted approximately $310,000 of her design firm billings were knowingly unsupported or inflated.

She agreed restitution.

Then affair.

No need.

Then prosecution offered plea:

Conspiracy to commit attempted murder? She knowingly agreed lethal plan. Serious.

Aggravated battery via toxic exposure.

Financial fraud.

Forgery.

In exchange for truthful testimony and dismissal of some duplicative counts.

Sentencing cap? Maybe 12 years, recommend 8-10.

Sophia accepted.

No guarantee.

Then Priya asked if I wanted submit position.

I said:

“I want no special deal because she’s my sister.”

Then:

“I also don’t want harsher because she’s my sister.”

Evidence.

Good.

Then Sophia requested to send me letter before plea.

I refused.

Not yet.

Then Marcus.

When he learned Sophia cooperating, his attorney requested own proffer.

Prosecutors listened.

He blamed.

Said Sophia poisoned earlier food without his knowledge.

Final dinner?

He admitted adding substance but claimed Sophia told him it was an emetic or sedative intended to scare me into resting.

Camera showed deliberate.

Messages:

She won’t be here long enough.

Hard.

Then his own search history.

Lethality.

Insurance.

His story collapsed.

He refused plea requiring admission intent to kill.

Trial.

Then hospital.

He had recovered physically, with lingering cardiac monitoring but no permanent severe injury.

He moved to temporary rental under bond with electronic monitoring and no contact order.

He could not enter apartment.

Joint property? Divorce court handled.

Then divorce.

Prenup strong.

Hale Meridian was separate property.

Our Lincoln Park condo was jointly owned fifty fifty.

We sold.

Furniture divided.

Marcus was entitled to half net equity despite crimes, subject any restitution liens later.

I did not manipulate.

Personal accounts separate.

No spousal support per prenup.

He challenged.

Lost after court found valid independent counsel and disclosure.

Then he argued my wealth had grown during marriage.

Prenup covered.

No hotels.

No Northstar. Not relevant.

Then life insurance.

I canceled or changed beneficiary after separation, according policy rights.

Not to evade legal claim.

Marriage ending.

Sophia’s bequest removed? I updated estate after conspiracy. Of course.

But my estate lawyer documented capacity and reasons.

No child.

Now personal assets:

Foundation.

Employee trust.

Mother’s scholarship fund.

A few friends.

No Marcus.

No Sophia.

Hotels remain stewardship.

Then someone asked:

“Isn’t that revenge?”

“No.”

People who tried to kill me should not receive my estate.

That is not difficult.

Then I visited my mother’s old South Side building.

I still owned.

Renovated.

Six families.

I had considered selling for years.

Now I stood outside.

Sophia’s words:

I want what she got from Mom.

I realized the building had become emotional evidence in our family.

I decided not to make decision while criminal case.

Wait.

Then a tenant recognized.

“Ms. Hale?”

“Yes.”

“Your mother used to sit on those steps.”

I smiled.

“She did.”

Then:

“She was strict.”

I laughed.

“Yes.”

The building was not empire.

It was brick.

Mortgage.

Repairs.

Mom.

Sophia had sold her half.

I had bought.

That did not mean I had won sisterhood.

But neither did it mean I stole.

Then prosecutor called.

Sophia was about to enter plea in open court.

And I had to decide whether to sit behind the sister who tried to kill me or stay home.

I went.

May you like

Not for her.

For truth.
