Chapter 6 - The Will They Thought They Knew

Marcus’s attorney demanded copies of my estate plan during his defense investigation.
He argued I had a financial motive to frame Marcus because I had recently changed beneficiaries.
The prosecutors laughed? No. They considered.
My divorce attorney Melissa Grant said:
“This will become ugly.”
“It already is.”
Then my estate attorney, Henry Cole, produced records under protective order.
Every revision.
Every reason.
The 2024 draft Marcus photographed.
The executed 2025 plan.
Meeting notes.
Independent witnesses.
No mention of marital suspicion.
The 2025 change occurred after Hale Meridian expanded into Los Angeles.
Minutes:
Client concerned spouse or sibling should not have temporary corporate control merely by family status.
That language existed before I suspected murder.
Good.
Then Henry explained current structure to me again.
“If you died tonight, your personal trust would pay Marcus two million only if marriage remained legally intact and he was not legally barred from benefiting due to wrongdoing.”
Slayer statutes? Current legal specifics complex. But generic: legal disqualification rules could apply if he intentionally caused death. Fine.
Sophia’s five hundred thousand family bequest also subject law.
Hotel interests:
Independent stewardship trust.
Professional trustee.
Employee purchase option.
Existing board selects interim chair.
No automatic Marcus.
No automatic Sophia.
The Miami hotels remained company assets.
So their plan to kill me would not have given them empire.
That irony made me nauseated.
They were willing to end my life for control they never would have received.
But criminal motive is often based on bad reading.
Then Marcus’s messages showed exactly.
He had photographed the old draft.
Never found current version because Henry stored offsite and my home folder contained superseded copy marked DRAFT.
Marcus cropped photos.
Sophia:
Is that final?
Marcus:
It’s in estate folder.
Sophia:
It says draft.
Marcus:
Lawyers mark everything draft.
He chose belief.
Then:
Sophia:
What about hotel trust?
Marcus:
I get family representative rights.
The old draft said temporary representative, not voting control.
He distorted.
Then life policy.
Four million old summary.
Current beneficiary reduced to forty percent for Marcus, foundation sixty.
He did not know.
Then Sophia wrote:
If she dies before changing anything, we’re set.
Marcus:
Exactly.
They believed time mattered.
Then one deeper motive.
Marcus had debt.
Not gambling.
A failed real estate investment.
He had personally guaranteed loans totaling $1.7 million on a luxury rental project outside Nashville.
The project collapsed.
He had not told me.
His income from consulting was insufficient.
He owed roughly $900,000 after asset sale.
Collections beginning.
I had no idea.
He had asked me six months earlier:
“Would you invest in a residential fund with me?”
I declined after reviewing deck.
“Too leveraged.”
He accused me of not supporting him.
I said:
“I won’t invest because marriage.”
He never mentioned he was already exposed.
Then Sophia.
Her design firm carried nearly $600,000 debt.
She had expensive apartment.
Staff.
Lifestyle.
She expected Hale Meridian contracts to save.
I had cut back her assignments after board procurement review because her rates had grown too high.
She called me jealous of her creativity.
Now messages:
Sophia:
You cut my hotel work and expect me to clap for you.
Marcus:
When she’s gone, you’ll have every property.
Wrong.
Sophia:
Mom wanted us equal.
Marcus:
Then we fix it.
Their motives merged.
His debt.
Her resentment.
Affair.
The belief my death would unlock wealth.
Then Detective Bennett obtained hotel security from Miami.
Marcus and Sophia had traveled there together twice while telling me separately they were elsewhere.
They stayed in Hale Meridian suites using my family rate.
The humiliation almost became absurd.
At one dinner, hotel manager photographed them with a notary? Hmm.
Better: They met an attorney? They had spoken to a business formation service to create Sovereign Coast Management LLC.
Records showed Marcus and Sophia as owners.
Purpose:
Hospitality asset management.
Created two months before poisoning attempt.
Their company existed before the forged transfer drafts.
Then its bank account received $150,000.
Source:
Marcus’s personal line of credit.
Sophia contributed $50,000.
Why fund?
They planned to acquire “management rights” to Miami hotels.
No legitimate agreement.
Then a pitch deck.
Sovereign Coast Management.
Portfolio:
South Beach property.
Brickell property.
Future Los Angeles.
They put my hotels in a deck before owning them.
Potential investors saw.
One investor asked:
“Does Victoria Hale know?”
Marcus wrote:
“Family restructuring approved in principle.”
Lie.
May you like
Then I realized they were not only waiting for my death.
They were rehearsing my disappearance from business while I was still alive.
