Chapter 4 - Lauren’s Number

I did not call her.
I texted:
Lauren?
Five minutes.
Nothing.
Then:
Yes.
My anger arrived before curiosity.
You knocked the medical report out of my hand.
I know.
You laughed.
I know.
You told me I’d come crawling back.
I know.
I stared at her repeated confession.
Why are you sending this?
Her answer took longer.
Because I helped set it up.
My entire body went cold.
Set what up?
The fight.
I called Maya before responding.
She said:
“Do not ask leading questions. Ask what she means in her own words.”
So I typed:
Tell me what “set it up” means.
Lauren replied:
Evan wanted you angry in front of everyone.
Then:
Patricia wanted proof you were “unstable about Miles.”
Then:
I agreed to film.
I sat on the hotel floor.
Miles was building a plastic dinosaur puzzle on the bed.
“Mom?”
“I’m okay.”
Lauren sent more.
Two weeks earlier, Evan had asked her to start saving clips of me at family gatherings.
He said he was considering separation.
He believed if custody became contested I would “turn Miles against the Pierces.”
Lauren was supposed to record examples of me:
Refusing food.
Correcting Patricia.
Taking Miles home early.
Checking ingredients.
Leaving family events.
Patricia created the “pattern” file.
Evan supplied some texts.
Lauren edited videos.
I typed:
Why help them?
Lauren:
Because I thought you were dramatic too.
Then:
And because I’m a coward.
I did not forgive her because she named herself accurately.
I asked:
Why change now?
A long pause.
Then:
Because after you left, Mom gave Miles’s plate to Evan and said, “If Claire isn’t there, maybe we can finally feed him normally.”
My throat tightened.
Miles had already left with me by then. She meant earlier or perhaps the plate during party before leaving? Need consistency: After Claire left the patio but before she left house, Miles maybe briefly remained? Hmm. Let's interpret as after Claire went inside to pack but Miles was still with Claire. Better Lauren saw earlier event not after leaving. Let's phrase via Lauren now: Before you drove away, when you went upstairs for his shoes, Mom tried to give him another cupcake. Evan let her. I filmed it. Good.
Lauren sent clip.
Miles sat at the kitchen island.
Patricia held a frosting covered fork.
Miles shook his head.
“Mom says no.”
Patricia:
“Your mother isn’t here.”
Miles:
“She’s upstairs.”
Patricia:
“Exactly.”
Evan stood by refrigerator.
Not stopping.
Lauren’s camera wobbled.
Miles whispered:
“I don’t want it.”
Patricia sighed.
“Stop acting sick.”
Then Evan:
“Just one bite, buddy.”
Miles looked toward stairs.
Then opened his mouth.
I stopped video.
My vision blurred.
This was not poisoning.
Not a dangerous allergen knowingly given.
It was still coercion.
A child saying no because he associated food with pain.
Adults overriding because they wanted to disprove his mother.
Lauren continued:
He cried in bathroom ten minutes later.
Did Evan help him?
No.
Patricia said he was copying you.
I breathed slowly.
Why anonymous?
Because Evan checks Mom’s phone and Mom checks everyone else’s.
What changed today?
Lauren:
Patricia told me if court asks, I have to say you shoved me.
I had pushed her hand away.
Not shoved her body.
She knew.
I asked:
Will you tell the truth?
Lauren:
I don’t know.
There.
At least honest.
Then:
I’m scared.
Of what?
Mom.
I almost laughed.
Lauren was thirty five.
So was I.
Patricia had trained both of us differently.
I had been trained to appease from outside.
Lauren had been trained to obey from inside.
Different cages.
Same architect.
I did not tell her that.
I sent:
Preserve everything. Speak to your own lawyer. Don’t delete or edit anything.
Maya would approve.
Then Lauren sent the message that moved the story again.
This isn’t only about custody.
What is it about?
Miles’s trust.
I stared.
What trust?
Granddad’s.
I knew Evan’s grandfather had left something for future grandchildren.
I thought it was a college account.
Lauren replied:
May you like
Mom has been charging things to it for years.
And she thinks you’re about to find out.
