Chapter 21 - Patricia’s Letter

Patricia waited almost two years.

Then her attorney sent a letter addressed to me.

Not Miles.

Claire,

I have spent a long time angry that you took my grandson away from me. That sentence is still the first thing I think, which is how I know I am not finished learning.

I read on.

She admitted tearing the doctor note.

Ignoring Miles’s refusal.

Billing the trust for expenses she considered “family” rather than Miles’s.

Pressuring Lauren.

Supporting Evan’s attempt to portray me as unstable.

Then:

I believed family authority mattered more than individual boundaries. When you disagreed, I called you paranoid because it was easier than admitting I had no right to override you.

No request for access.

Then:

I am not asking you to show this to Miles. If he never wants contact with me, I will live with that.

That line mattered.

I gave letter to Dr. Moreno.

Miles was five.

She recommended we not burden him with adult confession yet.

We told him:

“Grandma sent an apology.”

He asked:

“Does she say I can stop eating?”

I almost cried.

“Yes.”

“Then okay.”

That was enough.

A year later, he asked to read it.

We simplified with therapist.

He said:

“Grandma wrote too much.”

Accurate.

Then:

“Can I send her a picture?”

“Yes.”

He drew a cupcake.

Under it:

I can say no when I’m full.

I had to leave room.

We sent.

Patricia replied only:

Yes, you can.

No manipulation.

No reunion request.

Maybe she had changed.

Maybe she had learned that losing access was the only consequence strong enough to teach what words had not.

Either way, Miles did not owe her a test.
