Chapter 2 - The File Burning beside the Vines

Paramedics placed me on a stretcher while agents spread through Sterling Ridge Estate.
Julian tried to follow.
Diana blocked him with one arm.
“You do not approach her.”
“She is my wife.”
“She is also an injured witness.”
“I did not injure her.”
My face still carried Eleanor’s handprint.
Bruises were already forming around both wrists.
Mud covered my torn gown.
Diana looked at him without expression.
“Save it for the interview.”
Eleanor pointed toward me.
“She is manipulating all of you. She has hated this family since the day she married into it.”
I gripped the side of the stretcher.
“I married Julian before I knew what his family was doing.”
“You knew exactly what we had,” Eleanor said.
That sentence stayed with me as the paramedics moved me toward the ambulance.
Not who they were.
What they had.
Money.
Land.
Influence.
Protection.
To Eleanor, marriage was never a relationship. It was entry into an asset system she controlled.
The first ambulance carried me toward St. Matthew’s Medical Center.
A second remained for any injured guests.
Two patrol cars blocked the vineyard road while Diana’s team executed the sealed warrants.
From the rear window, I saw agents enter the ballroom beneath white roses and golden chandeliers.
Seraphina stood near the dance floor in her wedding gown.
Her new husband, Preston Shaw, held both hands above his head while an officer searched him.
The guests scattered toward the terrace.
Some filmed.
Others called attorneys.
The glamorous celebration had become exactly what the Sterling family feared most.
A public loss of control.
Inside the ambulance, the paramedic placed oxygen beneath my nose and monitored the baby’s heartbeat.
The rhythm was fast.
Too fast.
“How close are the contractions?”
“Three minutes.”
He called the hospital.
I closed my eyes.
Diana rode beside me after assigning command at the estate to another agent.
“Tell me about the file.”
“The man carrying it was Victor Lane, Julian’s private financial adviser.”
“What was inside?”
“We recovered only part of it.”
She opened an evidence photograph on her secured device.
A burned page displayed my name, government employee number, medical history, and an address connected to my mother.
“This came from a protected personnel system.”
“I never gave it to Julian.”
“We know.”
“Why bring it to the wedding?”
Diana enlarged another fragment.
It described a disciplinary complaint accusing me of unauthorized access to confidential financial records.
No such complaint existed.
A second page claimed I suffered pregnancy related paranoia and had begun targeting the Sterling family without evidence.
They were constructing a professional explanation for anything I reported.
If the audit became public, Julian could say his unstable wife abused government databases to punish him.
If I denied it, they could release the personnel file as proof they knew my employment history.
“They planned to destroy my career,” I said.
“They planned more than that.”
Diana showed me a half burned email.
The sender’s name was gone.
The subject remained.
AUDREY REMOVAL AFTER CEREMONY.
My hands became cold.
“What does removal mean?”
“We do not know yet.”
The ambulance turned sharply.
A contraction seized me.
The paramedic told me to breathe slowly.
I tried.
Fear made every breath smaller.
At the hospital, doctors moved me directly into obstetric emergency care.
Dr. Rachel Bennett examined me while nurses connected monitors.
The baby’s heart rate remained unstable, but I had not progressed far enough for immediate delivery.
They administered medication intended to slow contractions and protect the baby’s lungs if birth could not be stopped.
Diana remained outside until I gave permission for her to enter.
“You need medical rest,” she said.
“I need to know what happened at the estate.”
“Julian and Eleanor are being interviewed separately.”
“Arrested?”
“Eleanor was detained for assaulting you. Julian was detained for unlawful confinement and interfering with emergency care. Financial charges depend on the search.”
“What about Seraphina?”
“She claims she knew nothing.”
I pictured my sister in law dancing while I screamed inside the service corridor.
“Did she see me?”
“Video will answer that.”
The ballroom cameras belonged to Sterling Event Productions.
The local recording unit had been removed before agents arrived.
An assistant found the empty housing beneath the stage.
Someone knew the cameras could show Julian and Eleanor dragging me away.
Another camera inside the catering corridor had been turned toward the wall.
The wedding itself had become an evidence management operation.
Diana opened the preliminary search summary.
Agents recovered accounting ledgers from the bridal suite.
Shell company seals inside Preston’s luggage.
Government grant applications hidden beneath gift envelopes.
More than four hundred thousand dollars in cashier’s checks inside a champagne crate.
The wedding brought every important participant into one location.
Some guests were not guests.
They were directors of companies that existed only on paper.
The seating chart grouped them according to transaction role.
Lenders near the windows.
False vendors near the stage.
Political donors near the Sterling family table.
At midnight, Preston and Seraphina planned to sign a trust consolidation agreement using the wedding witnesses.
“It was a closing disguised as a reception,” Diana said.
“What were they consolidating?”
“Sterling Ridge land, the event company, six development corporations, and a charitable foundation.”
“Why tonight?”
“Because one of the public grant reviews begins Monday.”
They needed assets moved before investigators could freeze them.
The sealed warrants had interrupted the plan.
Yet someone had known enough to prepare my removal file.
Diana received a message.
The burned folder contained one intact photograph.
It showed me leaving the Attorney General’s office six weeks earlier.
The picture was taken from inside a parked government vehicle.
Only law enforcement and senior staff could use that parking area.

Someone inside the state investigation had been watching me.
Continue to the next part: Diana realizes the Sterlings may have received help from someone inside the Organized Fraud Division.
