Chapter 8 - THE DINNER TWELVE YEARS AGO

Julian did not deny the photograph.
He stared at it for several seconds.
Then:
“I introduced them.”
Rachel looked at him through video.
“You told me David was trustworthy.”
Julian closed his eyes.
“I believed he was.”
Twelve years earlier, Julian and David worked around the same commercial real estate financing circle.
David was not yet my husband.
I had not met him.
Rachel was married to him.
Julian hired Rachel’s boutique design firm for a hotel project.
David attended dinners.
Normal business overlap.
Then Rachel became ill.
Julian remembered.
“She stopped coming to meetings.”
Rachel:
“You sent flowers.”
“I did.”
“David threw them away.”
Julian stared.
“I didn’t know.”
No conspiracy proven.
Then another detail.
After Rachel divorced David, Julian stopped working with him.
Why?
“He asked me for information about Rachel’s settlement.”
“What information?”
“Whether she owned part of the hotel project.”
Same pattern.
A wife becomes ill.
David asks what she owns.
Julian refused.
So why did he later allow David near me?
He did not introduce us.
I met David seven years later at an urban resilience conference.
Julian was already leaving Arden.
He warned me once:
“Langley asks too many questions about ownership.”
I thought he was jealous because our partnership had collapsed badly.
I ignored him.
That hurt.
But it did not make Julian Architect.
If anything, he had recognized David’s pattern.
Then why did Architect know so much?
Julian admitted he had done succession consulting with Blackline Advisory two years earlier.
There.
Blackline helped Arden evaluate Meridian Harbor partnership structures.
Their lead consultant used only initials:
A.M.
Name:
Adrian Mercer.
A corporate governance specialist based in London.
Samuel searched.
Adrian Mercer existed.
Impressive résumé.
Former investment banker.
Infrastructure restructuring.
No obvious relationship to David.
Could he be Architect?
Messages used insider knowledge Blackline possessed.
Maybe.
Then Adrian agreed to a remote interview voluntarily.
He denied communicating with David.
Financial audit showed David’s payments to Blackline Advisory did not go to Adrian’s corporate account.
They went to a similarly named entity:
Black Line Advisory Group.
Two words.
Different jurisdiction.
A lookalike company.
Someone created it to impersonate the legitimate consultant.
That was a strong twist.
David believed he was buying insider governance intelligence from the real Blackline.
Maybe Architect was pretending to be Adrian.
Who knew enough to do that?
Someone with access to prior Blackline reports.
Arden insiders.
Julian.
His assistant.
Board members.
Lawyers.
Institutional trustee personnel.
Then Rachel remembered something else.
During her marriage, David had a contact saved as:
ARCHITECT.
Same name.
Twelve years ago.
My blood went cold.
“What?”
She saw it because David left a message open.
Architect:
Rachel cannot control the hotel interest if she is medically incompetent.
Rachel never understood.
She thought David was discussing her design partnership.
She did not save the phone.
But she wrote the message into a diary after her sister told her to document everything.
Her diary still existed.
If authentic, Architect predated me.
This was not someone created around Meridian Harbor.
David had used the same adviser during Rachel’s illness.
Who was Architect then?
Could be a role passed between people.
Could be David’s name for any secret financial adviser.
Or one person who had helped him target women for years.
That widened the case.
Rachel’s old illness now looked more deliberate.
David had asked about her hotel ownership.
She became poisoned.
Architect discussed incapacity.
No conviction then.
Now pattern.
Then prosecutors recovered David’s cloud archive from twelve years earlier.
Most deleted.
One surviving invoice.
Consultant:
A. Mercer Strategic Design.
Adrian Mercer?
The legitimate Blackline consultant was too young? He was perhaps forty eight now, thirty six then. Plausible.
Adrian denied knowing David.
Bank records showed no payment.
Maybe another Mercer.
Samuel traced company registration.
A. Mercer Strategic Design belonged to:
Alexander Mercer.
Not Adrian.
Alexander was a lawyer and corporate fixer.
Died eight years ago.
His firm dissolved.
Who inherited client files?
His daughter.
Name:
Amelia Mercer Reed.
Married name.
Mason Reed’s wife.
The attorney drafting David’s Meridian delegation was married to Architect’s daughter.
May you like
Mason had never mentioned that.
Continue to the next part: The lawyer helping David prepare Claire’s delegation is married to the daughter of the man who advised David during his first wife’s mysterious illness.
