Chapter 6 - PROTOCOL BLACK

David believed Protocol Black was a death plan.
It was not.
Not entirely.
I created it three years earlier after an employee at one of my companies suffered a stroke during a hostile shareholder dispute.
His family fought over passwords while people around him moved money.
I watched and thought:
Never.
Protocol Black had two levels.
Black One activated if I believed I was being coerced, medically manipulated, unlawfully isolated, or financially exploited.
Immediate actions:
Freeze discretionary joint account access.
Mirror electronic evidence.
Notify independent physicians.
Suspend standing powers of attorney.
Preserve communications.
Activate physical security.
Notify trust protectors.
Black Two was different.
Death.
Confirmed death triggered estate distribution instructions.
David believed Black Two benefited him.
Because he had seen my old will.
The current estate plan did not.
Samuel asked:
“Do you want him told?”
I typed:
NOT YET.
Not revenge.
Evidence.
If David believed he still had a financial motive, his communications might reveal who had been advising him.
The police and prosecutors controlled criminal strategy.
Samuel controlled civil preservation.
I controlled only my own choices.
Black Two remained sealed.
Then Samuel explained the forged trust inquiry.
Mason Reed’s office asked:
If Claire Langley dies or becomes permanently incapacitated before Meridian Harbor approval, who exercises voting control over Arden Infrastructure Patent Trust?
That trust owned the patents needed for the project.
Interim authority after incapacity:
Special committee.
Chair absent.
Vice chair Julian Cross.
But if death occurred before board approval, a separate trust provision triggered.
The patent rights could not be transferred for ninety days.
That meant Claire’s death would freeze the Meridian deal.
Why would anyone want me dead before Thursday if death delayed it?
Unless they believed something else.
Samuel found the second question Mason asked:
Can spouse waive the ninety day hold through estate authority?
Answer:
No.
He asked:
Can temporary personal representative do so?
Answer:
No.
Then:
Can trust protector appoint emergency commercial agent?
Possibly, under extraordinary circumstances.
Who was trust protector?
Judge Henry Caldwell.
Someone might need control of Caldwell.
Or his replacement.
Then Mason requested succession schedule.
Denied.
So the inquiry did not give them full answer.
David may still have believed my death let him control.
But whoever asked through Mason knew the hidden patent trust existed.
Only a small group knew.
Samuel.
Me.
Caldwell.
Two senior Arden officers.
Julian.
And the institutional trustee.
That narrowed the leak.
Then David’s encrypted phone backup arrived.
Not his ordinary iPhone.
A second device recovered from a locked drawer.
Prepaid.
Encrypted messenger.
Contact:
ARCHITECT.
Messages began seven months earlier.
ARCHITECT:
Claire’s health is the only variable.
DAVID:
She’s healthy.
ARCHITECT:
Not permanently.
I felt cold.
DAVID:
What are you suggesting?
ARCHITECT:
Nothing. You asked how Meridian control changes if Claire is unavailable.
So David had initiated the conversation?
Maybe.
Then weeks later:
DAVID:
Need something that looks natural.
ARCHITECT:
I do not discuss that.
DAVID:
Then why are we talking?
ARCHITECT:
Because I can explain governance. What you do with your marriage is your problem.
Important.
The unknown Architect might be unethical, but not necessarily ordering murder.
Then:
ARCHITECT:
If Claire misses the board vote, Julian chairs.
DAVID:
And if she dies?
ARCHITECT:
Complicated.
DAVID:
Can I inherit control?
ARCHITECT:
Not automatically.
So David was told he might not.
Then:
DAVID:
What does Caldwell control?
ARCHITECT:
More than you need to know.
ARCHITECT knew Caldwell.
Then three months ago:
DAVID:
I need the real estate plan.
ARCHITECT:
No.
DAVID:
I’m paying you.
ARCHITECT:
You’re paying for governance intelligence, not trust theft.
Payment.
Samuel traced.
David had sent $600,000 in cryptocurrency equivalents? Better don't get technical. Through a consulting intermediary to a Cayman firm? Could be. Use lawful financial trail, no details. Recipient company:
Blackline Advisory.
Beneficial owner hidden behind a nominee.
One invoice:
Meridian succession analysis.
Architect was real.
Paid.
Then the messages changed six weeks ago.
ARCHITECT:
Why is Claire suddenly under home care?
DAVID:
Illness progressed.
ARCHITECT:
You said nothing would happen until documents were ready.
DAVID:
Plans changed.
That sounded like Architect did not expect poisoning.
Then:
ARCHITECT:
Do not let her die before Thursday.
My eyes widened.
Samuel stared.
David had accelerated poison despite being told not to.
Why?
Next message:
DAVID:
If she lives, she can expose me.
ARCHITECT:
Then you created a problem I cannot solve.
So Architect wanted me alive until board vote.
David wanted me dead before I could recover or speak.
Two motives overlapping.
Then the last message.
Sent yesterday.
ARCHITECT:
She must sign Meridian delegation.
DAVID:
She can barely move.
ARCHITECT:
Use the eye system.
My stomach turned.
The eye tracking computer.
Someone knew it could legally record my selections.
David had not.
That was why Jessica was measuring.
That was why they wanted access to the device.
Not merely my room.
May you like
They planned to make me authorize something through my eyes.
Continue to the next part: The person guiding David wanted Claire alive long enough to use her eye tracking computer to approve a Meridian transfer.
