Chapter 19 - Charlotte’s Confession

Charlotte wrote me from custody.

I did not read immediately.

Three weeks.

Then Mara asked:

“Want me to screen?”

“Yes.”

The letter contained no threats.

No legal issue.

Mara handed it.

Charlotte wrote:

I knew you had money before Gavin did. Mason showed me private capital database. I used that against you because I thought if Gavin discovered you had influence, he would respect you again and I would lose him.

Interesting.

Then:

The car was my idea, not Mason’s. Mason only told me to create a reason for Gavin to move fast. I chose the scratch because I knew Gavin already complained that you were “quietly judgmental.”

Then:

I did not think he would hit you.

Maybe true.

When he did, I should have stopped everything. Instead I thought if I admitted I lied, he would turn on me. So I let him keep believing it.

That was her responsibility.

Then:

I told police he didn’t hit you because Mason said our entire plan would collapse if there was an assault case.

Finally:

I’m sorry.

No request.

No “forgive me.”

I put letter down.

Daniel asked later:

“Did it help?”

“No.”

“Then why read?”

“Because I wanted the full shape.”

Sometimes closure is information.

Not relief.

I did not reply.

Charlotte completed sentence.

Her PR licensing? No formal license. She struggled to find corporate work due conviction.

Eventually took communications role at small nonprofit after disclosure.

Fine.

People continue living.

Mason went to prison.

Bridget finalized divorce.

She reverted to Bridget Pierce? Actually Pierce is her maiden, Mason Pierce too? User says Mason Pierce, meaning he perhaps took surname or same? Strange. We can keep. She moved.

SwiftFreight posted first clean audited year under new governance.

Revenue down slightly.

Margins improved.

No hidden affiliate payments.

Crestview did not make huge instant profit.

Good.

Miller Ridge’s investment remained illiquid.

Not revenge payday.

Could succeed or fail.

I liked that.

Then my divorce decree arrived.

The court incorporated settlement.

Marriage dissolved.

Property allocated.

Coerced agreements void/not enforced.

Disputed debt excluded from my responsibility.

Gavin paid agreed portion of legal fees.

Protective order remained through criminal probation period, then expired without incident.

No ongoing contact required.

I sat alone in my apartment reading final page.

Sabrina Miller.

Gavin Pierce.

Dissolved.

Six years reduced to a case number?

No.

The marriage existed.

Good and bad.

Trips.

Inside jokes.

His hand on my back at my mother’s funeral.

The first apartment.

The day he brought soup when I had pneumonia.

The affair.

The belt.

Humans do not become consistent just because endings need clarity.

Gavin had loved me.

He had also hurt me.

Both were true.

Only one mattered for whether I stayed.

I signed acknowledgment of decree receipt.

The signature looked exactly like mine.

May you like

For months, signatures had frightened me.

Now this one did not.
