Chapter 5 - Penelope’s Umbrella
Penelope asked for a lawyer as soon as police told her we survived.
Smart.
Garrett kept talking for another eleven minutes.
Less smart.
He insisted I had grabbed wheel.
Vehicle data later showed the steering input that sent us toward the barrier originated from driver control.
That evidence was technical and would be challenged, but it mattered.
Then restraint.
Garrett claimed he knew nothing about altered belt.
Nothing about wheelchair tie-down.
Nothing about escape preparation.
Then investigators searched his phone under warrant.
Messages with Penelope had been deleted from primary view.
Cloud records and her device preserved many.
The first relevant exchange was not about murder.
It was about inheritance.
Penelope:
If both of them die, does continuity trust really come to me?
Garrett:
Family interest, yes. Trustee still exists.
Penelope:
Then what good is that?
Garrett:
Board nominations. Voting direction. Eventually control if structured right.
Date:
Eleven months earlier.
My stomach turned.
Their affair was at least that old.
Then:
Penelope:
Rosalind will change documents if she finds out about us.
Garrett:
She won’t find out.
Penelope:
Tobias hates you.
Garrett:
Tobias can’t do anything without Rosalind.
Cruel assumption.
Then pregnancy.
Penelope:
Test positive.
Garrett:
Are you sure?
Penelope:
Three tests.
Garrett:
This changes timing.
Timing.
I closed my eyes.
Then no explicit “kill them.”
Not yet.
Months of coded language.
“Clean transition.”
“Joint event.”
“Water route.”
Investigators would need context.
Then a message six days before river:
Penelope:
I can’t watch.
Garrett:
You don’t have to do anything.
Penelope:
I’ll know.
Garrett:
You wanted a future.
Penelope:
Not like this.
Garrett:
There is no other version where they hand it to you.
That was close.
Then three hours before crash:
Garrett:
Be at Savannah overlook by 10.
Penelope:
I hate you.
Garrett:
Bring umbrella. Cameras will make it look like you stopped for rain.
I felt physically ill.
Penelope had known.
Maybe regretted.
Still came.
Then shoreline audio? Camera had no audio. Not needed.
Then her pregnancy.
Five months.
Paternity testing later confirmed Garrett was father.
No surprise.
Then the affair timeline.
It began eighteen months earlier.
At a Hayes foundation fundraiser.
Penelope felt sidelined during board discussion about succession planning.
Garrett comforted.
Then exploited? Perhaps both.
Messages showed resentment.
Penelope:
I am Marianne’s daughter too.
Garrett:
Arthur never treated you equally on paper.
Penelope:
Everyone says it was business structure.
Garrett:
That’s what rich families call exclusion when lawyers write it.
He fed old wound.
Then she fed his.
Penelope:
Your father died hated by Hayeses.
Garrett:
My father was right about one thing. Arthur built a fortress around company.
There.
The anti-Victor stance had been performance.
Or had shifted.
Then Garrett told Penelope about trust.
How did he know details?
Through marriage.
I had discussed estate planning with him.
He sat beside me while Avery explained survivorship.
I thought spouses should understand.
He listened as future perpetrator.
That realization hurt.
Then Detective June Carver asked:
“Did Garrett ever pressure you to change your will?”
“Yes.”
A year earlier.
He suggested leaving more economic rights to spouse.
I refused because shareholder restrictions made it pointless.
He laughed.
“Worth asking.”
Then life insurance.
We each had $2 million term policies.
Normal for executives.
Garrett beneficiary on mine.
Financial motive perhaps.
But tiny compared to company and not suspicious by itself.
He would be barred if convicted of causing death.
Again, crime buys less than criminals imagine.
Then Penelope’s attorney approached prosecutors about cooperation.
Not immediately.
After she saw messages Garrett had kept.
Specifically one she did not recognize.
Garrett to an estate-planning consultant under false pretext:
If sole surviving parent of child who inherits family trust interest, how much influence can parent exercise?
Consultant answered generally:
Depends on trust. Parent does not automatically control assets.
Garrett replied:
What if mother is unavailable?
Mother.
Penelope.
Unavailable.
Her attorney showed her.
She panicked.
Maybe he was thinking childbirth complication.
Maybe future breakup.
Maybe something worse.
Then another search on his device:
Penelope estate default if dies unmarried with minor child.
No crime.
But pattern.
