Chapter 8 - Margaret’s Real Fear

Margaret’s lawyer called the Marston revelation irrelevant to the criminal case.
Legally, maybe.
Psychologically, it explained years.
She had known I was not poor.
She knew my trust interest could influence North Phoenix.
She knew Austin did not.
Why hide it?
Because Margaret had plans for North Phoenix too.
Forensic accountants found Raven Rock was only one piece.
Six months before the attack, Margaret signed a nonbinding memorandum with Graham Vale.
If Raven Rock acquired Desert Crest, it would receive a future option to purchase Wentworth Industrial’s seventy percent North Phoenix interest.
Price formula:
$58 million.
Current estimated value of that seventy percent:
Around $67 million.
Discount:
Potentially nine million.
Not insane.
But the option ignored development upside.
And required access rights over my twenty percent.
Without my consent, difficult.
If I learned my stake existed?
I could block or renegotiate.
So Margaret kept me ignorant.
Then why did she need cash so urgently?
Vale’s loans.
But another piece emerged.
Carla’s hotel project had not failed simply because Carla was reckless.
Margaret had pushed expansion.
Carla wanted one boutique property.
Margaret convinced her to buy a second.
Then third.
She guaranteed.
Used family contacts.
When interest rates rose, cash flow collapsed.
Carla deserved responsibility for signing.
Margaret amplified.
Same pattern across family.
Then Carla asked to meet me.
No contact order had been modified? Through attorneys, supervised, yes.
I agreed only after prosecutor cleared communication.
Conference room.
Carla’s left wrist wore a monitoring bracelet? No need. She was on bond.
She looked younger without makeup.
“I’m sorry.”
I said nothing.
“For what?”
She swallowed.
“The hammer.”
“Continue.”
“For telling Mom to break you.”
“Continue.”
“For taking things from your safe.”
“Continue.”
She looked at me.
“For believing everything she said because it was easier than asking you.”
That one mattered.
Then:
“I thought you were trying to take Austin away.”
“I married him.”
“I know how stupid it sounds.”
“What else did she tell you?”
“That you convinced him not to invest in my hotels.”
I had.
Because projections were terrible.
Austin told me privately he agreed.
He later told Carla:
“The board isn’t comfortable.”
He spared her feelings.
Margaret told Carla:
“Irene controls him.”
Everyone used lies to avoid direct conflict.
Then Carla said:
“I didn’t know about North Phoenix.”
“Do you understand your trust?”
“Now.”
“How much did your mother take?”
“Enough.”
She had filed civil claims through independent trustee.
Not against Austin.
Against Margaret and Raven Rock.
Then she said:
“Mom told me something after Dad died.”
“What?”
“She said Dad left most control to Austin because he thought women in the family couldn’t handle money.”
I almost laughed.
George’s letters showed the opposite.
He feared Margaret’s behavior specifically.
Carla interpreted restrictions as sexism because Margaret framed them that way.
Then Carla asked:
“Did Dad say anything about me in the red letter?”
“Yes.”
“What?”
I told her carefully.
He wanted her to learn finances.
Not be managed by Austin.
Her eyes filled.
“Mom said he thought I was stupid.”
Another stolen relationship.
Then Carla gave me a key.
Small.
Brass.
“Found it in Mom’s desk.”
What does it open?
A private document vault rented under Margaret’s name.
Not bank.
Secure storage company in Scottsdale.
Police already knew? Carla had disclosed.
Search warrant pending.
Why give me key?
Evidence technician would take it.
I did not touch more than necessary.
Two days later, Detective Brooks called.
Inside Margaret’s vault:
Loan files.
Raven Rock records.
Old Marston correspondence.
Copies of my mother’s trust notices.
And a sealed folder marked:
AUSTIN PATERNITY.
I stared.
No.
May you like
Not another blood secret? Need avoid overused. Could be Austin's paternity not necessary. Maybe "AUSTIN PRENUP"? Better strong twist could be "AUSTIN MEDICAL". But let's not use paternity because previous stories. Use "AUSTIN VOTING PROXY". Hmm.
Let's change folder "AUSTIN SUCCESSION." Great. Inside perhaps George's hidden medical condition? Let's do next.
