Chapter 14 - After the Verdict

Margaret was remanded pending sentencing because of financial flight risk? She had assets and fraud. Could remain custody. Let's say judge continued strict release until sentencing due age/no prior record? Yet guilty serious crimes. Maybe remanded. Fine.

Austin sat in parking garage afterward.

Did not move.

“I thought I would feel better.”

“You don’t?”

“No.”

I understood.

Justice is not anesthetic.

Then Margaret’s financial world settled piece by piece.

Raven Rock dissolved.

Vale recovered from Margaret’s personal investment accounts and a California condo.

Her Phoenix house was not immediately seized.

She eventually sold voluntarily to meet debt settlement and legal costs.

Foundation demanded repayment of George’s $4 million loan.

But they negotiated.

Because full demand plus lender claims would devastate.

Margaret transferred assets.

Kept protected retirement funds and enough for future housing.

No need for poverty theater.

Then Carla’s trust.

Independent trustee restructured.

Hotel project sold two properties.

Losses realized.

Remaining one profitable enough to retain.

Carla would have a smaller inheritance than if she had done nothing.

Consequences.

Not theft alone.

Then Austin used Successor Independence Option to permanently remove Margaret’s voting rights over designated eight percent.

Economic units remained hers.

She could benefit from company value.

Not control.

That seemed fitting.

Then North Phoenix.

Independent appraisers valued full partnership at $102 million after updated zoning probability.

My twenty percent beneficial interest:

Huge on paper.

Still not cash.

I met trustee.

Read everything.

My mother’s letters.

Henry Marston’s investment.

George’s side agreements.

No hidden debt.

My family had made one good investment decades earlier.

That was all.

No secret billionaire heiress.

No magic.

Just land appreciated.

Then Austin proposed company buy my trust out at fair market value.

I said no.

“Why?”

“I don’t know enough yet.”

He smiled.

“Good.”

We studied.

Eventually my trust chose to retain.

Not because marriage.

Because advisors believed future development upside strong.

I recused from company negotiations where conflict.

Governance became boring.

Good.

Then pregnancy.

Twenty eight weeks.

I had nightmares.

Margaret’s hand in my hair.

Hammer.

Safe.

Therapy.

Austin too.

Sometimes we attended together.

I asked:

“Do you blame me for what happened to your mom?”

“No.”

“Do you blame Carla?”

“Yes.”

“At all?”

“Yes.”

“Do you blame yourself?”

He paused.

“Yes.”

“For what?”

“Making my family your problem for years.”

That was not the crime.

But it was part of marriage.

Then he said:

“I kept telling you Mom was difficult instead of telling her she was unacceptable.”

I nodded.

“Why?”

“Because I thought if I made you tolerate her, I wouldn’t have to lose either of you.”

That was the same control in softer form.

Keep both.

Make one absorb other.

He saw it.

Then sentencing memorandum from Margaret.

She apologized.

Not publicly.

To court.

To me.

To Austin.

To Carla.

She admitted financial fear.

Still argued she never intended serious pregnancy harm.

I believed she probably did not think clearly about baby at all.

That might be worse.

Then Carla wrote victim? Defendant support letter? She did not ask leniency. She wrote:

My mother taught me that panic about losing money justified taking control from other people. I followed her. I am responsible for that.

May you like

Austin read and cried.

Family finally telling truth without ranking blame.
