Chapter 5 - He Knew She Was a Girl

The laboratory release became the first document I could not explain away as “family administration.”

Someone had used a copied signature to obtain protected medical information I explicitly chose not to receive.

Flynn’s chief of staff, Natalie Cross, hired her own attorney.

She had worked for Flynn seven years.

Her statement was direct.

“Mr. Vance emailed me a signed release and told me Mrs. Vance wanted him to receive the full report privately.”

“Did you speak to Mabel?”

“No.”

“Why not?”

“He was her husband.”

That answer was not enough.

But it was honest.

Natalie had not created the release.

Device metadata showed Flynn emailed it to her already completed.

The original file had been created from his personal laptop.

Then the fetal-sex report.

Girl.

Timestamp.

Twenty-two weeks before labor.

Flynn did not merely discover the sex.

He changed strategy after learning it.

The private bank inquiry for the fake Miles trust began eleven weeks later.

Why would Grace’s sex affect a fake trust for Miles?

Because Flynn believed publicly establishing a male child would make boards and family members more willing to accept his preferred succession narrative.

Not legally.

Socially.

He had been raised inside a family that joked about “the next Vance man.”

Eleanor changed the documents.

She had not changed every ego.

Then Hawthorne Private Bank.

Flynn applied for a $6 million revolving credit facility.

Borrower:

An investment entity he personally controlled.

Collateral support:

Expected funded interest from the Miles Descendant Capital Trust.

Problem:

The Miles trust did not exist legally.

The bank’s trust-verification department asked for confirmation from the actual Vance trust office.

No matching instrument.

Application paused.

No money funded.

Flynn withdrew.

A failed fraud attempt, not a $6 million loss.

Then why need money?

Northline Freight Systems.

A private logistics-tech acquisition Flynn had invested in personally.

He wanted to prove he could build something outside the family empire.

He committed more capital than he could comfortably provide.

One investor withdrew.

Lenders demanded additional collateral.

Flynn’s nine-percent Vance Meridian stake was already partially pledged.

He needed liquidity.

The fake Miles trust became a convenient asset that existed only on paper.

A child as collateral.

My fake signature as permission.

Then Brooks Family Services.

The audit separated legitimate from unsupported work.

Selina had actually produced recruitment analysis, competitor studies, and two strategic presentations.

Independent valuation:

Approximately $185,000 worth of services over eighteen months.

Total paid:

$812,000.

The remaining $627,000 covered unsupported invoices or personal expenses.

Apartment.

Travel.

Childcare.

Car lease.

Private medical bills.

Flynn coded them as consulting.

Selina signed many invoices.

She could not claim complete ignorance.

Then her attorney requested a meeting with Phoebe.

Not me.

Selina wanted assurance that Miles would not lose trust benefits if she cooperated.

Phoebe answered:

“His rights depend on the trust, not whether his mother is likable.”

That sentence reached me later.

I approved.

Then paternity.

The hidden schedule was forged, so we needed a clean process.

Independent testing.

Flynn objected briefly on privacy grounds.

Then consented.

99.99 percent probability.

Miles Alexander Brooks was Flynn’s biological son.

I signed the legitimate descendant recognition document.

Same form Grace received.

Same class.

Same standard.

Phoebe looked at me.

“You’re sure?”

“He’s fifteen months old.”

“That’s not my question.”

“I’m trustee.”

That was my answer.

Flynn immediately used my action in court.

His lawyers argued:

Mabel’s recognition of Miles proves there was no urgent conflict requiring suspension.

Phoebe laughed.

“No. It proves she’s doing her job after discovering your forged paperwork.”

The trust protector agreed.

Former judge Margaret Hale had been appointed by Eleanor years earlier.

She confirmed Flynn’s emergency advisory suspension.

But she also appointed an independent fiduciary monitor over extraordinary trustee actions while litigation continued.

I accepted.

Flynn hated that I accepted.

He needed me to look power-hungry.

Transparency ruined the story.

Then Margaret asked whether I had reviewed the MATERNAL CAPACITY file.

“Yes.”

“Do you intend to remove Flynn as beneficiary?”

“No.”

“Reduce him?”

“Not unless the trust requires something based on a final judgment.”

“Deny Miles?”

“No.”

“Favor Grace?”

“No.”

She nodded.

“Then continue.”

That evening, Phoebe brought one new bank email.

From Flynn to his private banker:

If Mabel questions the Miles trust, we’ll remove her after delivery.

The banker replied:

You cannot underwrite against anticipated removal of a trustee.

Flynn:

She will be medically unavailable.

The banker’s response was one sentence.

Pregnancy is not legal incapacity.

May you like

Flynn had been warned.

He continued anyway.
