Chapter 3 - The Woman Daniel Said Had Left

Caroline Cross had once been Daniel’s closest business partner.
Public records described her as a brilliant property analyst who left the company after a nervous breakdown.
Daniel had told me she moved to Europe.
Vivian said Caroline became obsessed with him and invented fraud allegations after he rejected her.
I believed them because I had never met her.
Robert had.
Caroline contacted him three years earlier after discovering that Daniel used inflated property appraisals to obtain loans.
She believed Vivian helped move funds through family trusts.
Before Caroline could provide complete records, her attorney withdrew.
Her apartment was emptied.
Her phone disconnected.
Daniel told investors she entered private treatment.
No missing person report appeared.
“She had family?” I asked.
“A father.”
“Dr. Leonard Cross?”
Robert nodded.
The physician who wrote my false psychiatric letter was Caroline’s father.
Why would he help Daniel after accusing him of destroying his daughter?
The answer came the next morning.
Police located Dr. Cross at a private clinic in New Jersey.
He refused to speak without an attorney.
His office records showed he had prepared medical reports for six women connected to Bennett property disputes.
Each woman later transferred assets to a husband, brother, or trustee.
Caroline’s name appeared among them.
Her father had declared his own daughter unstable.
He had signed the order that placed her inside a private residential facility.
Daniel had not simply survived her accusation.
He had used her father to erase it.
Officer Ryan returned to the hospital with Detective Sarah Monroe from the financial crimes unit.
Sarah placed a photograph on the table.
Caroline stood beside Daniel and Vivian at a company gala five years earlier.
Daniel’s hand rested on her lower back.
They looked intimate.
“Were they involved?” I asked.
“We do not know,” Sarah said.
Vivian had told investigators Caroline became jealous of Daniel’s marriage.
Daniel claimed she stalked him.
Company emails suggested something different.
Caroline helped Daniel build the valuation system that made Bennett Investments successful.
She also discovered he was changing reports after her approval.
When she confronted him, he threatened to expose private medical records held by her father.
Dr. Cross had treated Caroline for depression after her mother died.
Daniel converted grief into a weapon.
The same pattern he used against me.
Sarah opened another file.
The residential facility that received Caroline was called Hawthorne Restorative Care.
Vivian sat on its board.
Dr. Cross served as medical director.
The facility closed eighteen months earlier.
Patient transfer records were incomplete.
Caroline’s final destination was listed as family care.
No address.
No discharge signature.
No verified contact afterward.
The third account receiving money from the forged loan may have been created under her name without her knowledge.
Or Caroline could still be involved.
Sarah cautioned me not to assume.
“Financial activity does not prove the person controls it.”
“What did the account pay for?”
“A storage facility, legal retainers, and maintenance on a private house.”
“Whose house?”
The address belonged to Vivian’s Connecticut property.
The house she claimed was under roof repair.
Money from my forged mortgage had been maintaining it.
Police requested authority to preserve records there.
Before the order was approved, the property alarm activated.
A fire began inside the detached garage.
Local firefighters contained it.
The main house remained intact.
The garage held file boxes and medical equipment from Hawthorne Restorative Care.
Someone had attempted to destroy them.
Security footage showed a man entering shortly before the fire.
Daniel.
He had been released pending formal charging after the initial detention.
The protective order kept him away from me, not from his mother’s house.
His attorney claimed he visited to collect personal records and left before the fire.
His car camera placed him on the property when smoke began.
The investigation expanded to possible evidence destruction.
Vivian blamed me.
She called the hospital room from a blocked number.
“You have no idea what you are opening.”
“You wrote a false deed.”
“I protected my son’s future.”
“You borrowed against my home.”
“The property should have belonged to Daniel after marriage.”
“Marriage did not make me disappear.”
“It should have made you loyal.”
I looked toward Sarah, who recorded the call with my permission.
“Where is Caroline?”
Vivian became quiet.
“You think she is innocent?”
“I think you know where she is.”
“Caroline wanted everything Daniel built.”
“She helped build it.”
“She was weak.”
The word matched the language in Dr. Cross’s letter.
Vivian continued.
“Women who cannot control emotion should not control valuable property.”
“Is that what you told Dr. Cross about his daughter?”
The call ended.
Police entered Vivian’s house after receiving the order.
They found no Caroline.
They found a locked bedroom with restraints beneath the bed, medication bottles inside the bathroom, and a camera aimed at the pillow.
The closet contained women’s clothing in Caroline’s size.
Several dresses carried old dry cleaning tags.
One carried fresh perfume.
Someone had occupied the room recently.
On the desk sat a photograph of Caroline holding a newborn child.
Daniel stood behind her.
