Chapter 9 - The Witness from Tower One
The phrase which child Daniel chose could mean inheritance.
It could mean protection.
It could mean nothing more than manipulation.
Raul had spent decades using partial information to force people into fear.
I refused to decide before evidence existed.
Police located Ethan Wells at a bus terminal in Albany.
He carried cash, false identification, and a storage drive taken from Room 614.
He requested an attorney and offered information in exchange for protection.
He said Helena hired him first.
Years earlier, while dating Nora, he performed security work for the Halston family.
He discovered the hidden medical floor and saw Daniel.
Helena paid him to maintain cameras and erase access logs.
After he and Nora separated, Ethan kept copies for leverage.
When Alex contacted him, Ethan realized Daniel’s children had found the trust.
He pretended to help.
In reality, he reported every meeting to Helena.
“Why create Elena’s emergency shortcut?” Detective Bennett asked.
“To keep Alex trusting me.”
“Did you know Victor planned violence?”
“I knew they planned pressure.”
“Did you hear the breakfast audio before Alex reached the apartment?”
“Yes.”
“Why did you not call police?”
“I thought Alex would handle it.”
Another man deciding somebody else would absorb the danger.
Ethan admitted giving Helena access to Daniel’s metal box.
She removed several documents and inserted copies designed to direct suspicion toward Raul without exposing her own role.
Helena had not merely supported her husband.
She had managed Room 614 personally for years.
Raul controlled company money.
Helena controlled the patient.
Victor knew enough to obey both.
Ethan provided the missing camera drive.
The footage showed Daniel during the final month inside Room 614.
He appeared older than his age, with scars along his face and difficulty moving his left side.
He spoke slowly.
Some days he appeared confused.
Other days he understood everything.
In one video, Helena placed a document on his tray.
“Which child receives control?”
Daniel pushed it away.
“Both.”
“Alex is military. He can be persuaded through duty.”
Daniel looked toward the camera.
“Elena decides for Elena.”
Helena’s face hardened.
“The girl married my son.”
“You sent him.”
“He loves her.”
“You sent him.”
Daniel knew Victor had targeted me.
He may have attempted to warn us.
Another video showed Ethan entering alone.
Daniel gave him the original metal box.
“Take this to Alex.”
“Why Alex?”
“He will find Miriam.”
“What about Elena?”
“Victor watches her.”
“Which child do you trust?”
Daniel answered.
“The one who tells her the whole truth.”
Ethan did not.
Alex did not know the whole truth to tell.
The warning email may have been Daniel testing whether information reached me intact.
The camera footage also recorded the transfer.
Raul entered Room 614 with Helena, Victor, and Dr. Webb.
Daniel resisted the sedative.
Victor held his shoulders.
Helena told him I was pregnant.
For the first time, Daniel stopped fighting.
“My daughter?”
“Sign the release, and she remains safe.”
He placed his thumb on the paper.
The release was obtained through direct threat.
Then they moved him into the medical van.
Ethan followed the vehicle but lost it after the plate change.
He later received photographs from a driver demanding payment.
The driver was Peter Lane’s son, Michael.
Peter was the worker buried under Daniel’s name.
Michael had spent years investigating why his father’s death record disappeared.
He drove medical transports for Halston Foundation to enter the network.
He discovered Daniel.
He also discovered that his father’s remains were buried in the Mercer family grave.
Michael wanted both families to know the truth.
He had sent the encrypted email.
Not Daniel.
He used Daniel’s account to make us listen.
“Why warn me about Alex?”
“Because Ethan told me Alex had the complete box,” Michael said during a protected interview. “I did not know Ethan changed it.”
Michael had not intended to accuse Alex personally.
He believed anyone arriving through my apartment door might be part of Halston’s control.
The warning had been broader than its wording.
Michael provided the current route of the medical van.
The patient was moved to Saint Catherine Long Term Care in northern Vermont under the name David Cole.
Cole.
Our mother’s surname.
Helena selected it either as cruelty or concealment.
Federal agents reached the facility.
Room 614 was empty.
The patient had been discharged one hour earlier through a court order declaring Raul his legal guardian.
The order carried a genuine judicial seal.
The judge denied signing it.
Someone had copied his electronic credentials.
Security cameras showed an ambulance leaving toward the Canadian border.
Inside the room, Michael found one thing beneath the mattress.
A folded menu from the Lexington Diner.
My workplace.
On the back, Daniel had written a message with shaking hands.
Elena,
Victor did not find you because of the trust company.

He found you because someone at the diner called Helena.
