Chapter 3 - The Shares in Her Name

The video lasted forty three seconds.
A woman who looked like me sat against a plain wall and read a prepared statement.
“I, Elena Cole Halston, voluntarily transfer my beneficial interest in the Mercer Founders Trust to my husband, Victor Halston.”
The face was mine.
The voice was mine.
The woman was not.
The mouth moved slightly out of rhythm with several words. The shadow beneath the chin did not change when the head turned. One blink repeated exactly.
A synthetic video.
Miriam froze the transfer before the trust company completed verification.
The request originated from Raul’s private office.
The digital witness account belonged to Nora.
Nora told police that Raul asked her to approve a routine family consent. She denied knowing the video was false.
Detective Bennett did not accept that explanation without investigation.
Neither did I.
Nora had recorded my humiliation for entertainment.
She had laughed when Helena ordered Victor to strike me again.
Even if she had not created the false video, she had chosen her place in the room.
Miriam explained the trust carefully.
Daniel Mercer and Raul Halston established Mercer Halston Development thirty one years earlier.
Daniel created a modular support system that reduced construction time without reducing safety.
Raul attracted private investors and political connections.
The first tower succeeded.
The partnership became Halston Residential Group.
Two years later, Daniel died after falling inside an unfinished elevator shaft at the company’s third project.
The official report blamed a missing barrier and worker error.
Raul told our mother that Daniel had left personal debts and possible liability claims.
She signed a settlement under pressure.
The public record removed Daniel as founder and described him as an independent engineer.
His trust shares remained because one original investor refused to approve their cancellation.
The trust was sealed while Raul served as temporary manager.
Temporary management lasted twenty six years.
“What did he do with the profits?”
“Most distributions remained inside company reinvestment accounts,” Miriam said. “Some were used to increase the trust’s equity.”
“How much is it worth?”
She hesitated.
“Potentially more than seventy million dollars.”
I thought of Victor counting my diner tips.
Helena calling me cheap.
Raul laughing while I crawled across broken glass.
They had treated me like a servant inside an apartment partly financed by a company my father helped create.
“The money is not immediately yours,” Miriam continued. “The ownership history must be reviewed. Raul will challenge Daniel’s contribution and the trust terms.”
“Does Alex own part?”
“Yes.”
Alex looked uncomfortable.
“I did not know the value.”
“When did you learn about the trust?”
“Three weeks ago.”
Anger reached me before understanding.
“You waited.”
“I found Dad’s metal box after the storage company contacted me. I took it to Miriam. We were verifying everything before telling you.”
“You made that decision for me.”
“I did not want Victor to know we were looking.”
“He already knew.”
Alex looked toward the floor.
He had wanted to protect me.
Victor had used the same word.
Protection becomes control when the person at risk is denied information.
Alex understood.
“You are right.”
No excuse.
That helped more than an explanation would have.
Miriam gave me the facts he had found.
The box contained Daniel’s partnership agreement, design patents, and letters warning that Raul moved company money through construction vendors.
Daniel planned to demand an external audit.
He died three days before the board meeting.
The timing created suspicion.
It did not prove the fall was intentional.
Miriam refused to call it murder without evidence.
The immediate case remained clearer.
Victor assaulted me.
Helena and Raul encouraged him.
They attempted to obtain control through forged medical, financial, and guardianship documents.
They submitted a synthetic transfer while I was receiving emergency care.
The trust company locked every Mercer share for ninety days.
Raul could no longer vote them.
Halston Residential Group had a board meeting scheduled for the next morning.
Without the Mercer shares, Raul’s family controlled only forty one percent of voting stock.
Several outside directors could remove him as chairman.
The false transfer had been timed to preserve control before that meeting.
My pregnancy was not the only deadline.
Their company was already in danger.
A forensic review had found thirty million dollars missing from employee housing funds and urban renewal grants.
Raul claimed the transfers were temporary construction expenses.
The board demanded documentation.
Victor promised that his wife would consolidate the old founder shares and support the family.
He had offered my vote before I knew it existed.
“What happens if I refuse?” I asked.
“The board may suspend Raul and Victor.”
“And the company?”
“Legitimate projects continue under independent management.”
Their favorite threat had always been collapse.
Do what we demand or everyone suffers.
Miriam separated the company from the people abusing it.
That afternoon, Victor’s attorney filed a petition claiming I had attacked him during a pregnancy related delusion.
The petition asked the court to release him and restore his access to our home.
Attached was a medical report from Dr. Caroline Webb.
The doctor claimed I suffered paranoid beliefs about hidden family money.
She recommended that Victor supervise all legal and financial decisions.
I had never met Dr. Webb.
Her report was dated two weeks earlier.
Helena’s foundation had paid her two hundred thousand dollars for family wellness consulting.
Detective Bennett obtained the apartment search warrant.
Inside Victor’s desk, police found my diner schedule, private medical records, a copy of my father’s death certificate, and photographs taken outside Alex’s storage unit.
Victor had known Alex found the metal box.
He had been watching both of us.
The final drawer contained a file marked BREAKFAST.
Inside was a list.
Remove phone.
Create visible emotional episode.
Obtain signature.
Call Dr. Webb.
Move Elena to Halston Medical Residence if resistant.
The violence was not Victor losing control.

It was one stage of a plan.
Continue to the next part: Police learn that Victor’s family reserved a private medical room for Elena before the breakfast assault began.
