Chapter 20 - The Word Father

Andrew died? Not yet. Keep family.
Molly married at thirty to Clara? User says all white American, okay. Could be man. Let's use Nathan Cole, architect. June later marries Owen Reed, teacher. No need.
Molly had son Leo.
Before birth she asked Michael donor:
“Any family history updates?”
He supplied.
Then asked Travis:
“Do you want know?”
She surprised herself.
She told him:
“I’m pregnant.”
Travis cried.
“Congratulations.”
Then:
“You won't be Grandpa unless I say.”
“I know.”
After Leo born, Molly allowed one photo.
Later one supervised family lunch.
Travis held? Asked.
“Can I hold him?”
Molly said:
“No.”
“Okay.”
A year later yes.
Behavior.
Then June married Owen.
Travis invited to back row.
No walking aisle.
He attended.
Marlene dead.
Emma and Andrew front.
No drama.
At reception Travis approached me only after I nodded.
“Beautiful.”
“Yes.”
Then:
“Thank you for letting me be here.”
“June invited.”
“Right.”
Important.
Then he left early.
I noticed I did not watch him.
That was healing.
Then father word.
June called him Dad occasionally.
Molly never.
Donor Michael remained “Michael.”
Andrew was “Andrew.”
Children did not need one slot.
Family roles can be plural without competition.
Then Samuel’s tree at Caroline’s grew huge.
Caroline and Peter sold property when retiring.
They asked:
“What about tree?”
I panicked.
Could we move? No.
New owners agreed we could take small cutting/seed, but tree stayed.
Grief tied to land.
I visited once.
Then said goodbye.
We planted new redbud at my house from nursery, not cutting.
Samuel not trapped in tree.
Good.
Then Caroline:
“You’re okay?”
“Yes.”
Then she moved to Arizona.
We remained close.
Then Dr. Pierce retired.
I sent card:
“You were first doctor who believed my body over their story.”
He replied:
“You brought evidence.”
I wrote:
“You believed before phone.”
He had seen injuries.
Good.
Then Detective Cole retired.
No need reunion.
She attended victims’ event? We did not become friends.
Professionals did jobs.
Then civil records fully closed.
Riverbend settlement finished.
No pending claims.
Hale died after release? Maybe later.
Dr Hale served six years, released age74, lived quietly, license gone. He sent no contact. Died at81. No hidden secret.
Then Travis completed supervision after eight years release without violation.
No new crimes.
Restitution fully paid.
He remained ordinary mechanic.
No redemption business.
Then I realized I had not checked door camera when he visited June in years.
Fear reduced.
Then one evening he sent through daughters—not direct? He shouldn't use daughters as messenger. Better through mediator one final letter after supervision complete:
I will not request contact again. If you ever want it, I am available.
Good.
I did not reply.
Then Andrew asked:
“Forgive?”
“Not yet.”
“Need to?”
“No.”
Good.
Then I thought of Marlene.
I had forgiven her partly after death.
Travis alive.
No deadline.
Then Molly at thirty-five asked:
“Does not forgiving hurt you?”
“No.”
“Then leave.”
May you like
I did.
Forgiveness is option, not treatment plan.
